how much hound is to much trying to cross some into my breeding program but wanting to keep them quite on track let me know what yall think i know there are alot of people breeding them

what kind of hound you got?

a treeing walker but my good dog that i wanted to cross her with has some plott in him was not sure if it was going to put to much hound in the pups.Is there some hounds the are quiter then others?

well i know walker, black and tan, and blood hound are supposed to be real loud mouth, redbone and plott are supposed to be quieter.

if you can find a Mt curXplott that would be a good breed to add in

thats a thousand dollar question if you ask me.... just depends on the particular hound you cross with the particular cur... if your cur is quiet and you find a good semi open hound then i would breed.... every hound has lines in them that are more open than others and every line has more dogs that are louder than others...JMO

I have really liked the 50/50 crosses! All the ones I have hunted behind were real tight mouthed with good noses. I have a full plott gyp that is silent so far and a plott/cur that is silent also. I have 8 pups out of them right now if you wanna try you a hound Jimmy. They will be 3/4 Plott 1/4 BMC!

I didn't realize that there was such a thing as too much hound.....just kiddin', I was a hound man for many many years and still love to hunt with them. I now have 2 cur dogs that I'm perfectly happy with....one is 1/2 Plott..1/2 cat and is totally silent on track. I had one Plott that was silent.....only hound I've ever had that didn't open on track. Been my experience that a cur of any sort crossed with Plott will have the most likelyhood of being silent on track of any hound cross that I've seen. Hey,....a little hound is a good thing in my book. Good luck with your crosses if you try it.

some of the best hog dogs I have seen had a touch of hound or mtn cur in them.

my redbone sounds like a fire truck  but hes so pretty  lol  hes loud in all seriousness

For me I have one 3/8 and that would be about as much as I would ever want

as stated before.try and breed to a tight mouthed hound.even semi open to a cur your battin about 50%.that is if your shootin for dead silent.goin back over my plott x bmc with bmc again.liked the first batch but they are 50x 50 on barking.put alot of thought in it.or your wasting alot of time.my 2cent

Same here but.............why not find another silent cur with the traits you want to add to your line? For that matter, what traits are you looking to add to your line while maintaining a silent trailing dog?

I have a couple that are half and half that are completly silent. I would stay with a half or less.

1/2 and 1/2 you might get 1/2 and 1/2 or semi.  and there aint no such thing as too much hound. ;)

It just all depends on the dogs. really just a roll of the dice, and training.  I like the 1/2 & 1/2 but i dont mind a little mouth,  I would think for best results on silent would be 3/4 cur to 1/4 hound.  JMO

x2 except i have a female and she has trained more silent dogs than i can count... i dont like opens but i think as hog doggers you go with the best dogs you can get... she is now 4th in my string raising silent dogs(shes 8)

This is a Mt cur/hound silent on track, cold nose and long range. ive been tryin to get this dog for a while and the guy wont sell it  :(

I had some 1/2 hound 1/2 mtn curs, that made dang good hog dogs, and most are silent. wishing i had them now.

well my buddy has a 3/4 plott 1/4 pitt, and the only time he opens his mouth is when hes looking at a hog.......we crossed him with my old gyp that is 3/4 cur 1/4 pit and those pups are rough and cumming on strong

A "good" hound doesn't need any cur help.  We can talk all day about what breeds are best, but it all depends on the qualities that a specific dog possesses.  I've used hounds, BMCs, and all kinds of crosses and had some nice dogs and some culls.  I've had hounds that were good bay dogs and curs that were good strike dogs.  It's that magical dog that can do both that everyone is looking for.  I really don't believe there is a certain combination of breeds that makes that magical dog, if there was, every hog hunter in the world be hauling the same color dogs. LOL

JUST ENOUGH HOUND IS JUST RIGHT ;D
