 i have a mt cur around 2 years old i have sean him run a track by his self an bay the pig on a staged hunt. hes ben on a few hogs with other dogs  he loves to chew on some pork . he is the best  dog iv got so he gets a lot of woods time .hes not much but its wat i got i hunt him 2 to 5 days a week . he has started runing tracks 2 to 3 hundred yards an then just quiten i thought he was trashin.  but then i kicked him out on a hog that i sean in a dich an he ran it about 200 an came back. i dont know wat i need to do to help this dog other than runin him with other dogs. i want him to bable to do it by his self.any in put would be grate. im new to this sport an jus tryin to learn as i go.

short range dog thats all, ive heard that mt curs were natural short range, i cant prove it nor try it for myself

I dont consider this being short range since he's on a track i'd just say he's still young you prolly should run a finished dog with him to help him finish out the track...just my .02

sounds like this dog has had all the chances he needs ,cull him and do it right.

I'd say he hasn't learned that the reward (the hog) is at the end of the track and he has to work for it. I would work him on longer mock hunts and let the tracks cool before you turn him loose. Also you can get you a couple 100-125# hogs (runners) let him at it for a min. Then turn the hog loose right in front of him, let the hog get a little head start then turn him loose and let him run it down. Good luck with him.

Have you tried running him with some dogs that will stay hooked??

if he is all u got then keep huntin him...he will catch on...one day he will turn on like u want him too

Maybe the problem is the staged hunt. If the staged hunts have been short, he has gotten used to that and don't realize that he has to work a trail further in order to find the pig. That is the problem with staged hunts sometimes. They are a good tool to use as long as the dogs don't get too used to always finding pigs in a particular spot or in about the same distance. Jmo

I have owned many mtn curs that would run a track for hours if needed and would stay bayed many hours but I have also owned a few culls that would give up and come back.

Have you used a shock collar on this dog? If so this could be the problem, one wrong push of the button can ruin a good dog. Some mtn curs are real sensitive and they need very little descipline or it has to be done right.

he has olny ben on one staged hunt .i just put a rope on the pigs leg an trund it lose.he had to run it over 1000 yards . an yes i shocked him off deer an it set him back he dont have near the rang he did as far as just hunting

Mtn Curs are real gamey and want to catch game but they can be set back or even made to stop hunting with an E collar.

I always made sure the dogs liked hogs in a bay pen or staged hunt before I broke them off of deer. I used a cattle prod and deer scent at home to break them off of deer before hunting in the woods.

hey reuben where do u get your deer scent? Just wondering how you go about that? I usually take em to a spot where i know theres no hogs and a bunch of deer and try to break em like that.

I have used the same bottle for many years now and it still is half full.

I ordered from another site but the label fell off so this site is as good as any. They use real scent and the company is "Cronk's Outdoor Supplies" and the number is 207-882-7032.

I use a cheap cattle prod, I just make sure the pups are baying hogs in a bay pen and maybe have run them a few times in the woods.

I use a white piece of rag like a white hankerchief to simulate a white deer tail when the deer is running in front of the dog.

I tie the flag on the end of a 3 or 4 ft stick or limb and put some deer breaking scent on it.


I then walk in to the alpha male and let him smell the scent and when it touches him I light him up. I do this 3 times in rapid succession like  5 seconds between each time. I work on the alpha dog first becuase my reasoning tells me if he is scared to death of the deer scent then the other pups will take it's lead.

I do the same with all the pups as well as the dogs that are questionable deer dogs.

I repeat this a week later.

The third time is a week after the second time and this time I only do one tap with the prod.

One thing I have done prior to doing the above is to tie a rag with the deer scent in the middle of the yard and put the e-collar on the dog and turn the dog loose. Once the dog goes over to sniff the scent I would give the one tap on max.

I don't play around...I try to make a statement so I don't have to be jacking around a trashy dog. I don't mind working with a dog that trashes on small game but I want to get a quick handle on pups/dogs trashing on deer. Especially dogs that don't give up a track easily.

I like breaking pups off of deer before they start running deer... :)

so its called deer breaking scent? i guess what im asking is exactly what kinda scent is it. just general deer scent not pee right?

If he is two years old and been on many hunts and quiting a hot track like that the news aint good.

I will cull a dog in a min if he starts quiting a hot track if I seen the hog myself and seen him go then come bac o no that is even worse .  Once thay start that crap it is a down hill slide most the time . JMO  Not much hunt .

Also if a bay is going on and one of mine comes out and meets me while am walking to it half way there he might get another chance are two and then he is gone. Not much you can do to help a dog like that he either has it are he dont most the time.
