Title: want some kennel opinions
Post by: Purebreedcolt on June 03, 2011, 11:08:22 am
Think maybe fixing to build some
1.  Thinking 6x12 but got to thinking I'm waisting 4 foot of panel so why not 6x16.  Is it going to be harder to wash out the poo being 16 over 12 foot?
2.  What size do you like not want but useable size?
3. Any helpful hints?

Get 20' panels and make the pens 5' X 15'.  That way one panel makes a side and a front or back with no waste.

Can you get 2x4 and 4x4 panels in 20 foot and where I have only seen 16 foot ones?

Yes.  If you have a local feed store that sells panels, they can more than likely order you the 20' panels from their distributor.  When I built my kennels, that's what I did.  Your local store also probably has more than one supplier.  Have them call all, because the price can vary greatly.  Other problem is some suppliers won't break a bundle to ship to the feed store if your only needing a few. Luckily in my case, the cheapest source was also willing to sell me exactly how many I needed.

I was thinking of making mine  out of the 2" x 4" panel and make em 5' x 11'. Panels are also only 4' tall which makes it very short inside if you need to get inside. The other idea I had was turn length wise and make 6' tall then 5' x 10'. U have a little left I've but if you are welding em like I will u can "hide" the pieces on the inside for appearance and weld em good enough that the dogs want be getting thru. Not sure on the roof if it will be welded or wood frame with tin roof.

I made mine 5'x10'x6' high and used 2"x4"-6'x20' panels and had minimum waste. I found the panels through a local fencing company and they were the cheapest and delivered, and they got them from D&D.

Panels are also only 4' tall which makes it very short inside if you need to get inside.

You can get the panels in different heights.  I used 6' tall X 20' long - 2" X 4" welded wire panels.  I would expect to pay around $80-$90 each for them.

Framed mine with square tubing. Bought 24 ft sticks. Pens are 8x8, 24' pen divided into 3, with sheeted top and back. 2x4 hole panels. Panels are in 4' increments (12, 16, 20) so very little waste from frame or panel. Each set of kennels is 8x24 so can pull up on a trailer and move fairly easily. Thinking about mounting barrels sticking out back to give more room in kennel. Obvious but don't forget to make gates wide enough to get barrel or dog house or whatever in and out.

Come Monday I'll get the info on the wire company in Houston Where my boss got our wire, we got overstock stuff they cut for custom jobs that never got picked up. (2"*4") 6'X 16' but it could be cut any length and we got it at $9 a sheet. Good heavy stuff. The only downside for you maybe that we ordered a few thousand dollars of it. But I'm sure they'd still make a deal on smaller orders. We got enough for 8, 10'x10' kennels, a 20'x60' hog pen and the fence for the whole office.
