Title: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: tnichol on January 21, 2009, 09:34:18 am Was invited by Rex "Bump" here on ETHD to make a hunt last night on one of his places up near Lampassas, TX. I had heard good things about Rex and his Jadg Terriers from James and Bryant and was looking forward to seeing them work. I wasn't disappointed with my host or his dogs. Rex also brought along a buddy of his Eric.
The first thing I noticed was Rex has a bad-azz hunting rig - the polaris ranger crew you'll see in the pics - four seats - custom front rack for the dogs, all the gear you could ever need and plenty of room in the back for the dogs - now thats huntin in style! (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-rex-luke.jpg) We put out around 4:30PM or so on one side of the ranch. We hunted a few spots without any luck. This is Luke - the fuzzy Jagd of Rex's excellent find dog as I'd soon learn - but not ready to drive the ranger quite yet... (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-rex-luke1.jpg) Here is Rex's bulldog - sorry forgot his name: (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-rex-bulldog.jpg) We loaded the dogs back up and drove to another part of the ranch on the other side of the place. We put out near a small tank the dogs got pretty animated and we thought we were on something. But after about 10 minutes most of them came back - all but that fuzzy little dog Luke. A couple more minutes we heard him open up and Rex said "he's bayed - get the bulldogs". We unloaded quickly, cut loose the catch dogs and ran into the bay. Caught and killed a good sow - I'd guess about 140 pounds. No photo sorry - we were a bit winded from the long run. It was nice to see all of the dogs working together (we/they had never hunted together before). We were cutting the back quarters off the hog and catching our breath and we noticed that one of my dogs was gone, we figured she had rolled out. We made it back to the ranger and picked her up on the tracking system. We drove that way and heard her pretty quickly, but not as quickly as Rex's Jadgs found her and helped get the hog stopped. Again - we cut the bulldogs loose and again they all worked together as a team nicely. This was another sow - a bit smaller than the first. Here are all 3 bulldogs in the back of the Ranger: (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-3-bulldogs.jpg) We hunted a bit more on a few other spots with no fresh sign. Not sure - but I'd guess we tried about 3 other tanks. Its a really nice setup with that Ranger to be able to pickup and move to other sections of the large ranch quickly. Finally- we were at another tank - it was getting pretty late - and getting a bit colder. All the dogs stayed out longer than usual - we waited and waited, some of the dogs would check back in then leave so we were waiting for them all to come back when we finally heard them way off towards the River that borders the ranch. Again we drove that way and tried to get as close as possible. The bay got more intense - we got close and found that we had 2 bays going. I cut loose my catch dogs and Rex kept his on lead to see if we could get to both bays at the same time. Suddenly we heard a big group of hogs grouping together in bunch making that sound they make when they are a in a big group and pissed off. The catch dogs got there and the fight/chase was on - we heard the bay/rally break and hoped the dogs could get them stopped. Several smaller bays started around us - hogs crashing in different directions. A few minutes later we heard a stronger bay going - Rex said " that hog is going to the tank to make his fight" Sure enough we got to the tank and there were all the dogs caught on a big barr hog. (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-catch1.jpg) (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-catch2.jpg) Can't tell from these photos but this is a big hog - he was down in the muck/mud pretty deep. Here are Rex and Luke with the hog. Amazing to see a dog this small working a hog of this size. Fearless, aggressive fuzzy little dogs. (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-rex-luke-hog.jpg) (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-rex-luke-hog2.jpg) (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-hog-on-ranger.jpg) Here are Rex and Eric (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-rex-eric.jpg) Here Rex and I: (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/txhoghuntervideos/em-rex-tim.jpg) The dogs for the most part came out fine, and we all had a great time. Thanks Bump for the invite! Hope we can do it again sometime soon! Great recap, congrats on a good hunt. Steve Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: Bump on January 21, 2009, 11:57:48 am Matt...I didn't know we had barrows here either. I'm thinking some of you east Texans been slipping in on me. I just took him out to a processor. His scale said 230 lbs field dressed.
It was a fun and successful hunt. All the dogs did good and and it was a pleasure meeting Tim in person. This was my buddies first hunt and he had a blast. Thanks for the comments. Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: Circle C on January 21, 2009, 12:04:34 pm Bump,
Maybe a little East Texas rubbed off on Bryant when he came down and hunted with us ;D Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: catchrcall on January 21, 2009, 12:48:34 pm Great hogs guys! Nice pictures too. Congrats on a great hunt!

Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: Bryant on January 21, 2009, 04:22:07 pm Easy now...You KNOW that I didn't do it. Have to catch a boar before you can barr it...my dogs only catch shoats and piglets.
One thing about hunting with Tim...he does manage to get good pics! Sounds like an awesome hunt. My phone must have been off yesterday afternoon. Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: jhy on January 22, 2009, 06:27:34 pm Great Hog and Even better looking pack of dogs! Where did that jagd come out of? I been thinking about getting me one of those rangers since I drove one a while back. I believe your pics just sealed the deal for me. Is that rack on the front custom or did you buy it aftermarket?

Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: tnichol on January 23, 2009, 04:00:34 am Thanks all for the kudos, comments etc. It was alot of fun.
JHY - I know that the Ranger's front rack is a custom one designed by a friend of Rex's - really nice setup he's got there. I'll have to defer to Rex (Bump) or James (Longshot) to talk about the jagds and their pedigrees/breeders etc. I'm just the guy that hunted with them. I've been interested in jagds for some time, but don't own one. I'm still hunting them 2 old hounds and they haven't let me down yet. I've taken on a new young dog to replace my old mountain cur (Tweety) that I retired recently - so I've got some fresh energetic legs on the ground to harass and annoy the 2 old dogs too ;-) Tim Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: Buckshot on January 23, 2009, 07:55:59 am nice hog and good story i like those bulldogs
Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: Bump on January 23, 2009, 08:56:48 am JHY
I had three Jagds on this hunt. My best dog is Luke, the rough coated dog. He is my oldest and most experienced but only 13 months old. He came from Kentucky, James Mills. I just got on the internet one day and starting looking. Then a few months later decide I wanted another....so I started looking again and found my youngest pup from a lady in Oregon, Cindy Gibbs. Last October went with Longshot (James Reasoner) and bought two more older pups. Those came from a guy in south Texas who James bought out. They are around but can be difficult to find. If you want me to get you a few websites.....let me know. The ranger is the best hunting investment I have made. I like hitting an area picking up and moving. It also allows me to be lazy and drive to the bays, but has enough room to handle people, dogs and gear. The front rack was made by a friend here in Lampasas. He did a good job. I cut the front section out on monday so my Jagds can bail off easier. I do a lot of driving and let the Jagds ride up front and wind. Title: Re: Nice hunt w/ Bump in Lampassas Post by: jhy on January 23, 2009, 07:01:15 pm Cumberland Gap Kennels, Croatian imported lines, I think. Got a buddy in South La. that got one from him and is crossing it with Scott Alls blood currently. (Litter of pups on the ground but I havent got my hands on one of these yet.) I got a Jagd, but he jacked around and got a career ending injury on a big boar, so he is a yard dog that you catch a glimpse of every now and then. But there isnt any problems with varmits around my buddy's place.
Hunted this morning with a Prowler and Rhino. I think that the Rhino is what will work better in my terrain around here. They seem to be a little more compact and manuever through the woods a little easier. It was nice to just ride and not fight with steering a fourwheeler. Reminded me of when I made the switch from horses to fourwheelers! :) Will have to get a rack like that one made for sure. Thanks for the info. Joey |
