Title: Cat pups! Post by: FLBayNSlay on June 14, 2011, 05:52:09 pm I got these from LA, there a little over a year old. They both love a hog ;D my buddy went and bought the whole litter but one. Im new to this board figure i would show off a little of what Im feedin. I prefer to run long range, dead silent catahoulas. These 2 are papered my others are not.
6 weeks old This is the gyp,so far shes silent. How do you normally hunt? On foot walking or driving tracks etc Reason i ask, does the gyp work better off the ute winding than on the ground? Or equally as good at both! :) Title: Re: Cat pups! Or equally as good at both! :) I hunt big blocks (100-400 acre) I usually drive around the blocks letting my dogs wind off the back of the truck. If I see a good trail, or a track I will drop my dogs on it or road hunt them until they pick up sumthing and get gone. My lead dog also a Cat will hunt out 3-500 yards in no sign or if I free cast him. My male pup will usually run with him and is puttin it 2gether, he's more of a nose to the ground trail dog, The gyp is about 50/50 shes independent and hasnt been on as many hogs as my male, she has the talent and winds good off the truck but is a stubborn female :D. Both will go to a bay like lightning and love a hog. The gyp is on the hot seat because im not looking for jus a short range wind dog. I expect my dogs to do eveything I jus listed very well- wind off truck, take a track or free cast. I need them to be med to long range dogs with a little grit and a lot of bottom. Just curious to find how other hunters find how there different style of cat winds! I have found in my lines, that the ones with broader noses wind better (or at least start earlier in age) from the ute or quad. The narrower nosed dogs are superior running ground scent ;) and take a bit longer t oadjust to wind scenting from a vehicle...... ;D Title: Re: Cat pups! My lead dog has a broader nose and he can wind really well or put his nose to the ground when needed.. I need 3 more just like him, these pups are still young who kno's of they will be at my house a year from now. But they show promise, It seems like the narrower nose dogs are more open??? have you seen that??? I know most dogs with a good nose yip or bark on track. Title: Re: Cat pups!
