EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Something we normally don't worry about in northeast Texas. This one was caught in a small lake where we hunt alot. They seen another on the other day while fishing. Been in that thing several times and the thought of a gator being in there never crossed my mind!

"the other day" was back in march when they were in season right ;) i have a good friend that pays a fine every year for the next 30 something years for killin a gator out of season and gettin caught. some countys are different but montgomery is only for one month

Kyle killed one in his lake right there on HWY 11 a few years ago that was at least that big.  I hate those lizards.

the law is different in Texas. We don't have any football teams named after them or anything like that! ;DMatt this one was killed on that place we went hunting that night.

Man thats crazy, near where the hog was caught or near the camp house?  I don't remember just any big lakes out there but they can move around alot.

If you remember there was a little water right where we caught that hog that is the lower end of the gator  come from.,

Did they put a tape measure on that thing?  I keep looking at it and if they man is normal sized that is nearly 12' of gator!

Thats wild, that gator prolly just moved all around in that low area.

He didn't say much about that one all he kept talking about was the other one he saw while fishing. That's pretty good size for these parts.

That would be the end of me hunting that place for sure.  Wouldn't matter to me how good the hog hunting was!   

Thats a big ole gator, thats somethin i been wantin to do for a long time is go gator huntin. I thought about puttin in for some tags, but figured with the swamp people on t.v. tags would be hard to get.

What lake was he caught in? There have been several takin out of Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork in North East Texas! I would love to walk up on something like that around here. You just dont even think of a gator bein all the way up here!

I aint seen one here but a bunch of folks have told me that they see a few in sulphur river outside of Naples.

But I grew up in north Louisiana on the bayou Macon. No shortage of gators their. I have listened to old men talk about big gators trying to turn a boat over cause there was a dog in it. My grandaddy used to say that a dog was the worst thing to have in ur boat.

 I live in sw Ga  it so dry around here alot if creeks are dry and ponds are very low .  Went hunting sunday went by a spot that had a water hole that wasent 10x20 and not very deep but was next to a wet weather pond dogs went down to get a drink luckly didnt stay long  heads starting poping up saw 6 about 18" long and were coming there way.  I know mama was around some where.

shoot i dont know what id do if i hunted a place that didnt have them things  :o..  It would def make huntin here less stressful!

A couple years back the game wardenS caught one less than a mile frOm my house that was just shy of 9 feet long and turned it loose in a lake that's only a mile and a half from my house! I live in Southern Oklahoma.

Its a private lake. The guys that own it call it a lake est more of a big slough to me.

Sure could have gotten interesting the time we caught that hog on top of the beaver hut if one of those wanted to come check us out!!!!

blake ur right about tawakoni, cpl years ago they caught that gator in a trot line by kenny`s landing and then found a crap load of nests that had already hatched!!!

They are on the move all over down here where i am at, lots of tanks drying up and creeks just got holes now and then, went out to the kennel at the ranch and found a 4 footer in the cow trough, its a rectangle shaped trough, thanks to god the terrier was going crazy, i was about to stick my hands in it and wash my face and arms from the heat, of course no gun and am on crutches, it churened up the water so much could not see it after the dog started barking at it and trying to jump in the trough with it.  I hate em, over at Florida near Groveland where wifes ranch is a 21 boy was killed on Lake road when he swerved  to avoid on crossing the road, poor boy did not have a seat belt on and got tossed at low speed and killed.  They come up to her horse pens sometimes looking for water or just surfing around, pretty creepy, when i first went over there i was gung ho to wipe put all of the coons around the water holes with my terriers until she took the spotlight away from me when i was shining trees looking for coon eyes and says look in the water bumbass, i said wtf coons are not in the water usually???  Then i saw the red gator eyes and forgot about hunting those ponds.  Florida got so many seems like i swear i seen one at the Dairy Queen begging for hotdogs!!!!!

They like Duck dogs, Decoys and dead ducks too ;D

I've lost some fine curdogs to gators over the years.

Texas still has a season though , it is in September I believe . How did y'all manage to get a permit this time of the year?

we got them in sc too, fine hunts in charleston/beaufort area

 The govt. needs to think about the fact that just because something is almost extinct doesn't mean that you should let it over populate. I think that about half of the gators need to be removed. Its too dangerous to swim in ponds and lakes like we used to do when I was a kid.

Isnt that the dang truth!  We seen a dinosaur making his way accross the road this morning...when he heard out truck he took off lol.

They are in every single ditch down here  :-[

They took them off the endangerred list here a few years back. Now they are just protected.. Just like the fang buzzards!!  I say we make the convicts clean the dead animals off the road and whack a few off them pesky birds!

Im just glad we dont have them in the mtns of east TN. ;D

Texas has more than one season. It is by county.

But if a gator is going after a person or your dog you can shoot them. If you shoot a gator to protect person or dog you can't keep it. You have to report It too.

Texas has a September season for the core counties which are most of the coastal counties and a few others. If your county is not a core county then the season is either April-June or may- June. Also if you're in a non core county you do not have to apply for tags before you harvest a gator. After you kill a gator you then fill out a harvest document that you get from the txpw website then they will send you a tag. One of the places we hunt in magnolia has had 7 killed this year.

That's how it is in our counties.

just give them time and they will be just like hogs and will be everywhere they are the ultimate predator who has been able to adapt to every environmental change ever thrown at them the last several million years..we lost two sure nuff dogs last yr to gators first was a red tick gyp that was killed in a gravel pit it was later found out  ppl would pull up there on thier four wheelers and feed them and the gators heard our bikes that night and when the dogs went by the water to get a drink one nabbed her...ppl think its so fun and neat to feed them but they dnt realize that they are PREDATORS first and foremost that have millions of yrs of only the best to the best of genetics that have been engineered to do two things breed and survive by any means neccessary and that means eating anything that doesnt eat them first...now whose to say that could have very well been some unsuspecting kids who ride all around these woods this time of yr bc there are alot of camps around going for a swim at night in that gravel pit like they have for years the gator that got our dog could have very easily taken a grown man down....as far as gators moving north my grandfather was a wildlife biologists for lsu and the state of florida and later wildlife conservationist of the year for the state of florida while at lsu his thing was turkeys, whitetailed deer, and GATORS he used to trade alligators from la for turkeys from the university of alabama....one of his projects was studying the northern migratory patterns of the alligator and this was in the 60's and 70's and they were studying them as far north as memphis then so whos to say they havent moved farther north since then....

I've never had a gator mess with us or my dogs while hunting(knock on wood). I usually take care of them first...

Gators, here in Florida is just some thing we have to learn to live with.  I catch  alligators for FWC and get some where between 75 and 150 gators a year.  I am going to night to catch a gator that killed a mans dog in Holmes county .  Its like goose said ,, PEOPLE are, more times than not, the reason a gator becomes a problem. most gators dont want anything to do with a person , but a dog  well they sure love a dog.  Goose when you said , a predator  that has adapted and over come  every enviornmental change, I thought you were talking about my ex-wife. LOL  You better hope she never moves into your county.

I had a fine yound gyp get killed by a gator about 4 years ago as she was swimming across a pond after a hog, and it was only a 7 footer. That was in Atascosa County, in south central Texas.  Most of the ponds on the land that  I hunt have at least one gator, if not more. 
My personal belief.  Protect the ones that are on public land, but for those that choose to live on your own property, leave it's disposition up to the land owner.  They are no longer in danger of going extinct.  The land owner should have the right to decide if they want something on their land that has the potential to eat livestock, dogs, and or them.

kemmercurs that is when I would start carrying a gun. Shoot the gator going after your dog and call TPWD and tell them where it is.

A friend of mine and his dogs were playing tug of war with a gator over a hog they caught at the edge of a slough. At first he couldn't figure out why he could not pull the 150 pound hog up the bank until he shined the light.
