Title: Game Chickens?? Post by: mod93dirt on June 20, 2011, 09:03:41 pm Hope I am not breaking any rules or laws by posting this here, if I am please delete this. But was just wondering if anyone here is or has been involved with...uhhh...."gaming chickens"?? Unfortunately, I met my wife about a year after these were outlawed in Oklahoma. Her father was really big into them around here before our great state decided to make it illegal. He made a lot of money off of his roosters from the stories I have been told. Just wondering if anyone else was ever into them. I wish it was still legal here in OK, because from what I have heard, it sounded like a ton of fun. Her brothers which live in Utah now still raise some birds and make trips south of the border a few times a years for some big money events. Just wondering if anyone here was into the same thing?

I went a bit overboard. I had very high quality birds shipped in from all over the country. I've got way to many, and need to trim down.
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: waylon-N.E. OK on June 20, 2011, 09:14:09 pm There's a few Hatch roosters tied around the double hub cap ranch here ;) My neighbor was once the president of the Oklahoma Game Bird ass., he is 75 or so and has had game chickens from the time he was 14. He keeps 100 or so and tells me you can keep them, don't dub there combs until your ready to ship them or shortly before you " show " them. Most of his birds go overseas now and a few make there way here in the states to other folks who still " show " game chickens.
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: lineman on June 20, 2011, 09:36:34 pm Me and my wife are also into game chickens. We have to many different kinds of birds. We have really enjoyed raising them. We also wished it had not been outlawed. Do y'all sale or bye any. We have a lot and have not had the time to spend with them that they deserve. We are trying to get into starting a wild hog removal company. And are dogs are taking most of are time. Maybe we can talk some time.
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: T-Bob Parker on June 20, 2011, 10:16:04 pm I watched a program on animal planet last night about predatory birds. It was bloody, gory, ruthless and danged entertaining. How is it the same people that put out shows like that in the name of entertainment would fight tooth and nail to keep rednecks, Cajuns, Mexicans and philipinos from watching the same thing live? Are they more civilized because they spend thousands of dollars and years filming the same things to put it on prime time Sunday night on a supposedly family friendly channel?
You got good looking birds and a good looking girl, have fun with them bud. Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: tnhillbilly on June 21, 2011, 12:43:49 am Used to keep a yard FULL of them, I sure miss foolin with them, but my dogs were more important to me and just didnt have time to take care of roosters and dogs both, the way they needed so i got rid of my chickens. I kept a pair to run around the yard, a black grey hen that was my father in laws before he past away and my wife wanted to keep her, and i kept a bumble foot grey. So far that ole hen has hatched off 20 little ones this year.
Those are some good lookin greys in that pic. Post by: southtexasff on June 21, 2011, 07:05:39 am I think its more of the government not having a hand in the winnings that made it illegal.

Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: BIG BEN on June 21, 2011, 08:05:58 am I dont think there was a time growing up that everyday after school I had to feed and water 100's tie corded roosters at my families farm in California. My dad was into gaming real deep, he used to import birds from Guam for his breeding program and was at the worlds in arizona every year before all was outlawed. Ever chance I get to go to a event I do, they are still doing it hot and heavy in Cali, but ya have to know the main folks to even hear about a event. Lots of $ and trouble involved in Game birds.

(http://i652.photobucket.com/albums/uu243/MAV1971/Photo0500.jpg) kinda crappie pictures. we had alot of fun years ago in oklahoma atleast once per month at thackerville or texoma. got completely out of it a couple years after being outlawed but recently got a young trio of ray harris clarrets aka lights out and a pair of cigar clarrets. wont never be in like before i just like watching the little ones run around the yard. Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: waylon-N.E. OK on June 21, 2011, 03:02:34 pm Mr. Ronnie did you ever know a fella named Howard Bryant , he fought and judged a lot at Mid America. He is my neighbor and one of my best friends.
Most Game bird men I ever met were sure nuff good solid country boys, there birds were treated with superb care and respect. The people of Oklahoma voted to end Fights here on a Friday years ago, then Sunday slid there seat up to a table to eat a chicken dinner from some birds who were raised in little pens, full of growth hormones and treated with only enough care to keep them alive and grow so fast there feet could not support them. That's what happens when people in big cites who think food is all made at the super market vote on issues that they know nothing about. It made criminals out of honest good family people who have had these birds there whole life, Birds that go back to the same roosters that were fought in the basement of the white house. How far we have slipped from our roots. Well I'll shut up now cause it's over and done with anyway Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: cajunl on June 21, 2011, 03:34:12 pm Florida will make you a felon for something that simple.
Sometimes this great country makes some changes.......some are not for the better! Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: goose on June 21, 2011, 03:58:38 pm any of you guys ever faught in south la at the sunrise club or jameson creek....anybody ever heard of ronnie amacker he has some TOP NOTCH hogdogs and used to have the birds to beat and still is very competitive at the shows on a reservation in alabama...i think his website is rockytopgamefarm.com if im not mistaken
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: dub on June 21, 2011, 04:25:55 pm They are trying to go about making them illegal to own in Texas. They passed some stupid law that you cant keep a chicken on a rope or in a cage. I could off a little on that law. It snuck up on me. I do not like the government taking away my right to pursue happiness as I define it. Animals are animals not people. Animals should not be protected under the law.
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: gary fuller on June 21, 2011, 05:51:25 pm now this is a post that hits home. i had gamefowl for over 25 years and havent had em for about 10 yrs now. i actually went to mike ratliffs cockers school in menlo georgia about 32 years ago.i sported birds at least once in tennesee, alabama, georgia, some in arizona, tons in california and a decent amount in oregon i was a vice president of our state gamefowl breeders association for several years and also helped run a sporting club here for many years. i also reffereed zillions of birds.i think i owned some of about every family known to man at one time or another ,lol.and i think the most roosters i ever had at once was about 200 or so. i had a real good family of lollyd minor blues( white or yellow legs only) for quite a while till between the thieves and the varmints i lost em. i had some good fowl from dan grey too( kelsos, coons, and a few battles cocks from him we used to breed) but my favorites were my family of chets i had for many years. these birds were great crossers and put cut in about anything. the chets crossed to the dan grey birds made me alot of chicken feed in the short knife.
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: SwampHunter on June 21, 2011, 09:53:53 pm Any body want any pens? i got about 25 3x4 an some round pens free if any one wants them
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: mod93dirt on June 22, 2011, 12:00:46 am Thanks for the comments and compliments on the birds everyone. That is my wife and bro in law with some of his roosters in Utah. I just wish I would have met my wife a few years earlier so I could have got to go to some of the shows. Between her father raising roosters, greyhounds, and race horses, she is way more redneck(or "country" as she likes to say) than I ever thought about being. And I couldnt be happier about it. I know less about game birds than I do about hog dogs, and that ain't much. But I am positive that if they were still legal I would have a yard full of them. And i know without a doubt that my father in law would. He said he sold all of his pretty much the day they outlawed them. Not because he wanted to, he just didnt want to break any laws. Most of his trophies are from the Salina Game Club, or Texoma. But I know he fought them all over Oklahoma. One of my wives favorite stories to tell is when she met Wilfred Brimley(actor and the quaker oats guy) at some fights in OK. She said he was there with some of his own birds showing them in the contests. Just goes to show you it wasnt just for the backwoods folks. Like I said i was just interested to see if anyone else was into this, and apparently there are u bunch of you.
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: tnhillbilly on June 22, 2011, 01:06:16 am My wife is the same way, grew up around roosters all her life, know more about roosters than i ever will.
You would be amazed how many people still keep chickens and show them, thats what amazes me, is how they ever got it outlawed with that many people for it. Kinda like these stupid dog and breed laws, nobody wants to get involved, i guess. Dont think it will happen to them. Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: Bo Pugh on June 22, 2011, 09:10:26 pm theres still a few backyard pitts around the house ,here i had some buddys get pretty big into it, i never could i didnt really like the gaft and then going to the drag pitt and all that but i did like to watch the knife, if im not mistaken i think its only a misdemeamnor here in alabama
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: M Bennet on June 22, 2011, 09:30:07 pm my buddies dave and bare foots still fight in alabama, dave still fighting the albanys i sent his son 6 yrs ago. barefoots fights some hippy chickens. muff/toppy.
Title: Re: Game Chickens?? Post by: tmatt on June 23, 2011, 07:50:00 am I had game chickens for a long time. I still have some old whitehackles, some claret, some butcher stuff, a few Albany hens and pulleys, and some old miner blue stuff and some hatch birds. I really like the gaff, but for some reason it seems like everyone was doing the short knife thing when they decided to stop it in Oklahoma.
