Title: Cory and Nathan's Special Hunt
Post by: Sean on December 09, 2007, 10:43:04 pm
Okay, a little back story here. Nathan is 8 years old. His best buddy Cory is 10. Cory has had a rough time of things here lately, as his Dad recently died suddenly and unexpectedly(he was only 45). Well, Nathan's Dad Chino put it out there that all Cory really wanted was to go hunting and catch a hog, and Nathan did too. I found out about this and let Mike know. Mike got with Chris and Mandi and Matt, and they set up a hunt for the boys today at Chris and Mandi's Place in Clear Lake. We all showed up around 7:00 and got on some action right away. Ended up getting a great blonde and black boar that went around 210lbs. The boy's faces just lit up when they saw him. Within an hour and a half we had already caught 3, and it was obvious the kids were having the time of their life! We ended up with 4 hogs total. Chris and Mandi donated the large boar to Hunters Harvest, so everybody wins here. A special thanks to Chris, Mandi and Matt. You guys showed these boys a time they won't soon forget ;D
I also have some really great video I'll be posting soon.

We had a blast taking these kids out on their first hog hunt! My own favorite part of the hunt was the capture of "Bacon Bit", the shoat who became the mascot of the whole expedition. The bay dogs helped to get him shut down while Mike dove in to grab him. The photos of Mike and Matt tying up Bacon Bit were truly hilarious. By the end of the day, Bacon was just about tame and didn't seem to mind being carried around like a poodle. Cory went home with him in his lap in the front seat of the truck! He had already cleared the new pet with his mom, and I can't imagine what she was thinking.

The guys at the mission (Victory Home who benefits from Hunters Harvest) were so happy with the boar.  The freezers get low this time of year, and every single person there came up to us to say thanks for the meat. They were a great bunch of guys and we were happy to have the opportunity to help. I can tell you that you get a really good feeling when the critters we love to catch can help so many. I think however that the guys are used to their meat showing up in a cooler, and were a little surprised when Big Boy came off the truck still hookin'! It just proved to add a little after church excitement to a Sunday night.

All in all, I think the day was a huge success. The boys got their hunt of a lifetime, we all had a great time, no dogs were cut, and the meat went to feed the needy. Certainly a great time had by all.

This is a hunt that I think we will all remember forever.  The hunt could not have gone better and we were able to share this great sport with two new kids that I think are hooked now.  I had a great time talking with boys while we were riding the mule around and showing them all the different animals and plants that they are not used to seeing.  It was nice to get to share that time with them aside from the catching hogs part of the hunt because the whole experience is what makes the memories.  Good job guys on lining up this hunt and I appreciate yall letting me be a part of it.  I think everyone that was walked away with a little more perspective on hunting and life in general.

Thanks for stepping up and making that hunt for the boys.  I saw the original post and was wishing I had been a little closer.  Those are memories that will last a lifetime.

"Bacon Bit" the little pig went home to be a pet for the boys. The small white sow was kept by Mandi and I for training some young pups. The larger sow is going to be BBQ for the young hunters, and the large boar went to Hunter's Harvest.

The Pink Pig's name is Delta Burke. She is healing up well and has gone from super mean to super sweet. She rolls over and lets me rub her tummy. Still limping on that front leg, but I'm sure she will be fine. She's eating well now and is on her way to getting better.  ;D

It is driving my dogs crazy having a hog in the barn that I am intent on petting. When I am scratching her head, she grunts and the dogs go nuts. I wonder if a hog would hurt my goats if she were raised with them?
