Title: Bulldogs up to no good Post by: Bump on July 01, 2011, 03:54:30 pm Young bulldog pup broke his cable run last night and Jack jumps the fence as desired. They took off back behind the house obviously up to no good. Last time this happened it was four days before someone saw the dogs and called me. I called for 3 hours before the pup came to me.
I knew he was a little bit hard headed....but dang ;D (http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af79/rexbumpus/076.jpg) (http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af79/rexbumpus/078.jpg) (http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af79/rexbumpus/086.jpg) Jack finally showed up around 4:00 or 5:00 am. He was back in yard trying to act as if nothing happened. I couldnt prove it but I think they were jacking with something ;D (http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af79/rexbumpus/085.jpg) I did what I could and let the vet finish the job. The pup had about 2/3 as many in his mouth as he did in his head. She guessed close to 1000 quils. Porcupines are not very common in our area. Title: Re: Bulldogs up to no good Post by: ETHHunters on July 01, 2011, 04:05:01 pm Man that's terrible! Looks like it took several times before they give up. Do you have a picture of your pup without all the quills?
Title: Re: Bulldogs up to no good Post by: Bump on July 01, 2011, 04:10:59 pm DAMN!!!! Wonder if they are broke of them now?? They have all been removed by my vet or his wife....who is a vet too. She said a few were broke but they would fester out. The pup is not normal. He comes from some good blood. Vet told me she gave him twice as much sedative as the big dog and he still wouldnt sleep. She finally put an IV in him and had to go that route. She still had a hard time keeping him under sedation. Id be willing to bet the porcupine is dead. I guess atleast know he would do the same on a hog...or hope so ;D Title: Re: Bulldogs up to no good Post by: Bump on July 01, 2011, 04:13:29 pm Man that's terrible! Title: Re: Bulldogs up to no good Post by: Cutter Bay Kennels on July 01, 2011, 06:10:54 pm I'm so glad the porkies are not around my parts. That just looks like it could really make a man get upset. A couple of years ago, I sent a nice male hound I had up to Michigan to be run on bears. My buddy had a horrible time breaking him off those dang varmits. If a dog has not quit, it does not help. I always thought he was kinda dumb, but the fact that he kept after them for a while just simply confirmed it. I hope they learn on their own really soon for your sake.

Especially on east end of county where I live.Title: Re: Bulldogs up to no good Post by: Heaven Sent Kennel on July 04, 2011, 02:39:51 am I always thought mine would have learned. we got on a small group the other evening and got a few caught then my young dog went and found him a porcupine. he didn't have many just pulled them right there on the spot and was done with it. I've pulled quills out about a dozen times this year. I got an older dog that quit biting them and sit back and bay...or so I thought and the next time he found one he latched on again. these have all been cur dogs. they bayed one up one evenin' and I cut my bulldog loose and we pulled about 300 out of her in the field but that was my fault for turnin' her loose. I don't think they ever learn but the porcupines are starting to get a lil thin around here ;D

In 1977 I took my lead strike dog, a leopard cur and my catch dog to Alaska. The cur bayed a porcupine and my catchdog looked worse than your dog but not by much. By the time we crawled through the alders to get to her, the big huge porcupine, nearly the size of the 60 pound pitt, was in two halves. She went clean through it like a chainsaw. We spent hours pulling quills, some even pinned her jaws together and sewed her lips shut. Some were so far back in her throat we could not get to them. Some were really long quills, 4-5" as it was a large animal. The local vet in Alaska said to me, " The will migrate around in her body for years. We cannot surgically remove them all, as they do not show up on X-rays as they are protein, keratin, etc.. so we cannot know where to find them. They may do her no harm. Or they could migrate to her spine, heart, brain, or other key organ and kill her. She may live two days, two months, or two years before they kill her." The dog lived for another 7 years to die of natural causes. These are the two dogs that stirred up all the trouble in photo link below. I was afraid they were on a brown bear! Later in the summer I was fishing near the same place and the cur bayed a huge brown bear that came for our fish. I was afraid the bear would kill the dog as those bears are faster than you think. But the cur, Cyrus, was a veteran hog dog and made that bear sit down and eventually run off. No contest. Bear was freaked out by the dog. Maybe it was the blue eyes? LOL! http://www.goatcherwildlife.com/cyrus_n_dixie.jpg Title: Re: Bulldogs up to no good Post by: Bump on July 06, 2011, 11:50:34 am Good story Buddy. I have noticed the broken quills are pushing out and migrating in his mouth. I pull several out every evening. He not too fond of it.
Tmatt...not sure got2catchem can answer that. The pup is out of his stock. My older dog came from the pound. |
