Title: What to do about a broken leg? Post by: Dhughes on July 09, 2011, 01:08:22 pm My birddog fell out of the pickup and broke his back leg about halfway up this morning. Is there anything that can be done? Or just let it heal?
Thanks, Daniel Title: Re: What to do about a broken leg? Post by: ironheadknls21 on July 09, 2011, 01:20:02 pm If i was for sure it was broke and i thought alot of the dog i'd try to get him to the vet asap......

Post by: T-Bob Parker on July 09, 2011, 01:33:38 pm They're gonna splint it for 6 weeks and change the splint every two weeks, if its non surgical it should cost around 3-500 dollars. You can do it yourself with guaze, a PVC pipe and some self adhering vet wrap, keep it clean and changed 1nce a week and feed puppy food with a lil calcium supplement till it heals.
Title: Re: What to do about a broken leg? Post by: dub on July 09, 2011, 02:39:00 pm It depends. We have a bird dog named crip because we did not go to the vet fast enough. We thought it was just a fracture but it had also dislocated. If it is a good dog it is worth a trip to the vet for exam and x-ray. We have a good relationship with a couple vets. They know we do most of the care of our dogs. So they only charge us for stuff we need.
Go to the vet and get it checked. If you want to splint it yourself just tell the vet. But if a joint is messed up you want to get on that fast. Our dog only needed it out back which would not have cost anything but an exam and x-ray. Title: Re: What to do about a broken leg? Post by: DixieDogs24 on July 09, 2011, 04:03:30 pm Had one get hit crossing the road once thought it was broken. Took her to the vet doc said keep her off concrete and let it heal 6-8 weeks. 8 weeks later she wasn't walking on it took her to another vet and found out it was never broken just dislocated. They couldn't put it back in because of scar tissue. They cut the ball off and it healed ok. She never hunted good again. 1200 down the drain. Make sure the vet takes an xray so its properly diagnosed if your going to spend the money.

Title: Re: What to do about a broken leg? Post by: Dhughes on July 14, 2011, 04:26:33 pm I got Stoney back from the vet today. The break was too high to cast so they put a rod and 1 wire in it. The vet also had to take out a piece of bone that was just floating around in there. He will be cooped up for 4 weeks while it heals but should be ok. A free puppy sure gets expensive sometimes!
Thanks for all the replies. Title: Re: What to do about a broken leg?
