Title: RIP Birdie
Post by: courtneywidacki on July 18, 2011, 07:48:34 am
Well, we had a bad weekend. We set out on a hunt at about 10:30 friday night thinking its late enough and cool enough. We starting driving and headed towards the gravel pits. Okie opened up about 150 yards away. All the others joined in. The hog kept breaking. We headed to it and got pretty close but it broke out again towards the bikes. We eased a little back towards the bike and noticed okie was there and not moving, and birdie was off about 300 yards not moving. Aaron and I went towards okie, while charles went with the garmin to find birdie. Okie was layed out on the road getting immediate attention from Adam and Karen. He was overheated. Me and Tanner loaded up with water bottles and went to find charles and birdie. She was about four gravel pits over, in the bottom (with no air flowing throught there). Charles was attending to her with water when we got there. We then loaded her up and tried to get her to where there was air movement and a tank. We worked on her for hours tryin to get her to become stable. She would get better and then get worse, better, then worse. She never really got her site back and was never able to really hold her head up. There were times we though she was coming through, but She didn't end up making it. Okie was a close call too, but because he came out to the road where there was people and air movement, he was able to get help right away. He is doing well today.

Birdie was a wonderful dog and a great hog dog. She helped our small pack out and help stop many many hogs with us. She will be greatly missed. She was a pleasure to have in our pack. Clay, I cant thank you enough for allowing her to join our pack. I am so sorry to have to be writing this right now. May she rest in peace with Tank and the other hog dogs who have joined doggie heaven.

If you have any more photos of Birdie, pleas post them in her honor.

Courtney,

I hate to hear that and I'm sure sorry for your loss. Birdie came from a friend of mine named Chris Windham in Madisonville. I got her when she was about 6 months old, started her and hunted her a couple of years before giving her to Clay. She always hunted her tail off and found a bunch of hogs for us. Here's her first hunt back in 2007...

She was a neat little dog, I will always remember her as a little puppy in a pen with all other black siblings at Hermans house.  She was unique thats for sure and always a little querky but hated a hog.  My other great memory of her is watching her spin and bay "4 fingers" in that plowed corn field nearly 3 years ago.  She looked like a puppy beside that hog but she never backed down and is the reason we caught the hog that day.  I hate the heat and I hate the summer time, good dogs lost every summer with similar stories.

Hard to forget watch Birdie working on ol Four Fingers all by herself in that wide open field.   Birdie was a neat little dog, and I can't count the times she scared me after a bay, thinking she had overheated. She would just lay down and look dead for a while, then hop up and roll on looking for another.  RIP Birdie

Birdie's hog, Four Fingers.

Courtney I still feel horrible for you guys.  We tried our best, and can only be thankful that Okie pulled through.

I have caught a lot of hogs with Birdie and almost consider her a part of our pack.  Team Cold Hate will miss her.

RIP Birdie

Okie is doing great. Two days ago he was walking but really stiff, but yesterday he was running around like nothing was wrong. He even tried to go hunt in the woods by the house. So now hes in his pin. We left him in the yard with the other dogs so he could get more movement and try to work out the cramps. But now hes doing great.
