Title: redbone and bmc cross
Post by: heavyhitter89 on August 13, 2011, 12:03:19 am
i have a few buddies that use them but i was wondering ya'lls opionion because i now do removals and i dont really hunt one steady terrain but i also need a dog with some range and some grit, he has a few pups that he is willing to give to me i was just wondering if yall think its worth a shot both parents are good dogs but i was wondering how the pups would be?

I have hunted behind that cross a couple times and like the dogs range so I got 2 pups to try next year, they are 2.5 to 3 months and already go about 150 yds to the river on their own. I'm guessing they're going to be range.

yea i have hunted with the parents and the female is the redbone she is pretty rangy with some serious grit and dad is 75% catch, i think im gonna pick them up tomorrow, they are about 2 months old now they look just like a redbone with the cur body how would you suggest i start them, i have always been told never start hounds in a pen? what yall think

dont do a pen, try getting a 30 pounder, soak it and drag it through some long grass and let the pups try and trail it

it honestly depends on how your gonna hunt them

well a lot of my hunts are on open feilds like corn feilds or rice land but i think i am going to want them to range out pretty far because my main dogs arent to far out range wise and i need some with some good distance, i have never trained a hound lol and could use some more info, do i just drag it throught the grass and tie it up or what?

well you stated the father is catchy, i wouldnt want them to range to far till you know how gritty they are, thats a dead dog walkin really, but them being hounds i would work their noses real hard, and yea just drag it by the back legs and tie it to a tree and give it enough chain to let it fight back if they find it and as they progress move the pig further and further and give the scent a longer time on the ground before the dogs hit it.

I posted my style on before for training pups with hound I just give the shoat a lil more run time to make the dogs use their noses but I don't start a hound till at least 6 months curs I start about 2 to 3 months.

I know a good friend that breeds plott hound in they work just as good in the wood as in the pen an all my dogs start in a pen until they can bay a rank hog an the pen ! The pen help with side steping and moves that u can't teach a dog he just learns by his own ! I have a cat/curr mixpit in I like the way she bayed so I try to turn her into a pen dog went good until she learned how to catch so I a 10 months I took her to the wood last weekend for the first time she ranged out 320 yard with the bay dogs ! The last water hole we struck a pig then heard baying then 10 seconds later caught!a 200 lb boar in taylor texas

T-bob's looks more cur than my 2 pup. The main difference is ear length and snout..mine look more like a hound

Can't do pics from my phone to here, I just posted a pic of red in " lets see some colored dogs"

Thanks critter catcher, I like him pretty good ;) can't wait to see yours grow up too though.

There's no telling what crossed dogs will be, mine is pretty dang loose but have heard of them being catchy. Some have hunt and range and some aint worth getting hit by a bus. All you can do is try em out.

my two pups have big floppy ears like a redbone but built just like a cur. i am always up for new crosses but i have heard alot of bad about crossing those two breeds. but its worth a shot i guess
