Title: Public and goverment land ?
Post by: ole shep on August 15, 2011, 10:36:25 pm
I know most of the dog associations are busy trying hard to just keep us in the woods. But I would like a little more country to hunt. Say 220,000 acres on Ft Hood or corps of engineers land around Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lakes. Can yall hunt Natl. Forrest? Need somebody with some stroke. Or does everybody got plenty land to hunt?

I don't understand this one... I read about everybody hunting Natl Forest lands except for in Texas. What's the difference??? As far as I can tell there is just a "leash law" for pets...??? La Grange isn't very far from some good east Texas forest land.

I m not sure about corps land and forrest you might can hunt it on foot does anybody know? I coon hunted on corps land when my buddy had it leased for grazing. You can hunt coons on Ft hood with dogs but no hogs. Why not?

You can run dogs in the Crockett, Sabine and Angelina National Forests... not in the Sam Houston.

Call the forest service for more info.

From what I understand....there is a fella out of gatesville that has a contract for the hogs....he makes all the decisions and rules regarding hogs. Apparently dogs are not on his approval list. This is only hearsay

This figures.. I emailed TPWD and asked them about a year ago and they said no. Couldn't tell me where to find it in the literature, just said no. Well, I would surely like to go cat/coon hunting after deer season. Maybe some hog doggers could point me in the right direction since I won't be after the swine. Best areas to stay away from houses etc. Thanks a lot. This made my day.

Tom, look up the US Forest Service... they make the rules for the national forests.

TPW&D has their hands in the Sam Houston because it's listed as a WMA under their public hunting lands in which you have to buy the $48 annual permit. You can still run dogs in the Sam Houston for cats, coons, squirrels, coyotes, foxes, etc... just not hogs. >:D

My coon dogs would be some trashy Mutts.  I betcha I wouldn't be able to take my coon dogs out once without them trashing on a hog  >:D

That's right and he's got a heck of a racket going there too.  He's got it so that you can't even place a stand or feeder within 150 yards in any direction of his traps.  The good hog areas will have traps almost like they are set in a grid exactly 300 yards apart.  He can shut down a big piece of property with 5 or 6 traps.  You can't use a blood trail dog on Hood either.  I asked a game warden about using a dog to trail a wounded deer and he asked me " Why would you want to wound a deer?" rolleyes

I hunt the Davey Crockett National forest all the time. I live right in the middle of it. Their are 161,842 acres of public property in Trinity and Houston counties. Got some hogs here but you just have to know where to find them. Just gotta watch out for the game wardens. My buddies got tickets for not wearing orange in Spring while hog hunting down past my house. I thought they could have gotten away with a warning but the warden didnt think so I dont guess.

Yea I have duck, coon, pheasant, dove, and any other kind of dog u want and they all trash on hogs. I'm also so scared of the hogs after my dogs trash on em that I'm obliged to do "something" with the hog. Also have my coon hounds wearing protective vests after watching tv and realising how DANGEROUS wild ferrel hogs are, especially the red eyed ones.  >:D ;D

Me and Dexter thought about rehabilitating soldiers coming home. Instead of buying a crotch rocket we would just take them hog hunting. Should be exciting enough.

Yeah I was told by people at Davy Crockett you can run during deer season except sometimes the deer hunters "mistake" your dog for a deer  >:(  It came from a guy who said he lived there so idk what the rule with that is lol

Springtime they have a meeting there on Hood to decide what the rules will be for that year and if they want to make any changes.  I work on Hood every day, once I get back to the states I can see when this next meeting will be and maybe who we need to talk to.

I ran some core land. You want to keep as low profile as you can and have to use your head when hunting public land. I would never run during deer season and if I had to it would be at night. No point because you know there are going to a bunch of idiots in the woods and I dont want my dogs shot. You also have to think about the future of running dogs. If you piss the deer hunters off, when it comes rule making time the deer hunters will win everytime...We as hog doggers have the cards stacked against us. I'm already seeing it around me. Prime example I know a few guys in town that have no business running dogs that will go down in the bottoms during the prime of deer season during the day and run hogs around in circles. The core guys was hearing alot of flack about it from the deer hunters and ol be damned if the new rules came out saying NO HOG DOGS ALLOWED...Alot of these core and public lands say nothing about running hogs with dogs but if the high ups hear about it will likely be changed against us..Just my thoughts..

Hate to say it but it would be a very hard sale to run dogs on hood. If they were to allow it . I doubt it would last more then the first year. I would think money is better spent keeping what public land we do have and education in our own ranks. It is a losing battle.

You can and have been able to run coonhounds in there since before I can remember. You can run coons tonight if you have the proper permits...takes about 30 minutes to get them on base.

Yep.  You can run rabbits and squirrels out there too.  Just no hog dogs or blood trackers.

I know about being able to run coons. The deer hunters are the ones who will cause the probelms with the hog hunters. Well, the other way around, but you get what I am saying.
