Title: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: BIG BEN on August 26, 2011, 09:41:26 pm When I first got into hog hunting with dogs I explained to the wife and kids about what would happen. Dogs would come and go, some would eventually buy the farm and some would be culled so dont get attached! Id been trying to get rid of an "extra" good CD here the last few days and told the family my intentions days ago without an uprising. Had the dog sold 2,3,4,5 times today and finally had a time and place to meet someone to get him. I loaded him up, went inside to grap my cap and shades. Come out to my daughter and son sittin behind my truck telling me "ole Levi aint going no where daddy" they were crying, the whole bit(whats a daddy gonna do). Needless to say i guess now I have a 80 pound chit eating house dog,"thats not a hunting dog" according to the kids. What would you have done?

Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: levibarcus on August 26, 2011, 09:58:45 pm I'm feeding 2 feist dogs right now because my wife loves them and got upset when I talked about selling them. They are some fun little dudes and will find and bay hogs, I just don't need all those bay dogs right now. I guess it was a good thing I didn't have the money handy today then big ben! It was good talking to you though, I enjoyed it.
Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: dub on August 26, 2011, 10:01:47 pm Slap the kids to the ground and yell at them to shut the &^% up. (That was a joke. Nobody get upset)
I got one of those dogs too. Man I hate it when the kids or wife gets attached. My wife tells me I need to pet the dogs more and like cudle with them. I have to remind her they are employees. If they don't work they get fired and a new home. I never take or bring a dog home when anyone is home. Plus I keep dogs at my dad's so that is an exit way to move dogs out. But my wife knows so that is why I have a dog taking kennel space and eating food that does not go with me much rolleyes You will have more dogs than kids so look out for those kids. My son likes to go see where I burried his first dog. Kids and dogs are bond you don't mess with. Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: sfboarbuster on August 26, 2011, 10:06:33 pm A guy I hunt with, his 4 year old daughter said the other day, " If the dog won't hunt, they go to see grandpa" Funniest thing i've ever heard. Guess you just have to train them from an early age!
Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: arrowbar on August 26, 2011, 10:09:20 pm my wifes idea of culling is to fix them and give them away as pets..... I prefer to give them away as pets and shred the papers and have the owner fix them.
Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: Noah on August 26, 2011, 10:12:40 pm My 5yo daughter sees death as most kids see the sun going down every day....... It happens... best come to terms with it at an early age... appreciate those that you chose to be with while they are here... never know when they gonna go away.... but even when they do... life goes on... whether you like it or not.

Guess you just have to train them from an early age! What was my daughter doing in Florida? They get fixed and sent as pets. If they die then they die and I shoot straight with my kids. My son was six and we cried together about his dog. Ain't nothing wrong with crying over a dead dog. But when they don't work or I just want them gone they go to grandpa's house. Now to be fair that is where I keep the dogs that get on my nerves too rolleyesTitle: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: Bar W on August 26, 2011, 11:22:04 pm My son knows the score and doesn't get attached, if they don't hunt or they get human aggressive they are culled. My daughters ask where the dogs go and I'm honest and tell them I culled them because they didn't hunt. Now that being said they are getting attached to a couple new pups so I hope they hunt, because my kids are more important than good hunting dogs.

Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: WayOutWest on August 27, 2011, 11:33:07 am I have worthless APBT house dog that keeps me from living with the French Bulldog that my wife wants.
Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: burton on August 27, 2011, 02:10:27 pm I went through the same thing. I ended up buying a Jack Russell pup and giving it to my kids and explaining to them that this is there dog and don't worry about mine.

Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: hogaholicswife on August 28, 2011, 12:39:57 am My husbands brother sent a 'bull dog' from Jacksonville a few years back for my husband....when we got home our little boy was leading it around on a string.
Bingo as he was to later to be named was a fiest at best with a little terrier mixed in for tenacity. He was horrible, every chance he got the little 'stard would pick a fight so we had him fixed to see if it would slow hom down.... yeah right. I came home one day and Bingo starts smack with Charlie right at my feet....I let them fight it out for a few then proceeded with the hot shot to break them up. When the little one got home I proceeded to tell him that Bingo HAD to go. Well he started bawling and all I could see was this blue eyed little darling and this little feist dog running and playing in the yard......so we sent him to live at his nannies house ;D now he gets to visit on weekends! He hasnt gotten attached to any of our other dogs since, he plays with them but he understands the concept of they have to earn their keep and that they may or may not come home. We do not hide any form of death from him, its a normal part of life that I think alot of people refuse to deal with. Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: 5150hogdogs on August 28, 2011, 06:41:36 am My lil boy is five and any dog that comes to the yard he checks out first ? He asks dad does he hunt then he ask wanta put him in the pen after that I ask him well what you think son he either says dad he gotta go or dad I like that dog lolol the ole lady on the other hand is a lil harder to deal with she says another dog David how many is that oh no some got to go but some you just can't sell or give away so they go to cull I gotta wait till she leaves to do what I gotta do then a couple of days later she ask what happin to such and such dog I just tell her he went as a cattle dog so my lil boy is sooooo much ezer to deal with lolol
Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: TimmsHogDogs on August 28, 2011, 01:01:49 pm Ya'll sound like my husband and father in law, I find it convienient that the dog they were just treatening gets killed two days later in the woods rolleyes seriously im not stupid. I have gotten a dog once that growled at my kids and my exact words to my husband was you shoot it or I WILL. Lets just say I didnt have to. I understand culling is a part of hunting but if it were my kids dog like that they would be keeping it 8)
Title: Re: kids, wife and your dogs Post by: tmatt on August 28, 2011, 02:42:58 pm Shoot, I'd let them keep that one and use it in an emergency if need be. I'd also explain to them that this is the only time this is gonna happen. My oldest daughter used to say that the dog went to the pond to live but after a couple of trips to the pond she realized they weren't there and put 2+2 together. She is fine with it as long as I don't me with her dogs. My wife understands and don't ask questions anymore. Lol
