I never learned on a 410 I started on a 20 gauge. I have never owned a 410. But I want to start my seven year old on a 410. I guess we will start in a field and then with a couple rounds of skeet before trying his hand at doves. But my question is what choke. It seems to me a full choke because there is not much lead but would be harder. The only 410 I have shot was a Judge pistol so I would like some opinions.

Full choke gives you more range for sure. The problem is that .410 ammo costs double what 12 or 20 gauge costs.

Don't know on the 410 but pond hopping I shot a lot of ducks in my younger years with a single shot 410 don't think I ever shot a dove with it though.

I know the ammo ain't cheap but that little guy really wants to hunt. I know that feeling. The first shotgun I shot was a 12 gauge. My dad had to hold it up and he caught the gun. I got up and wanted to shoot it again. I want something he can hold and shoot. I was looking at the Mossberg 500 or the 510. The 510 has an adjustable stock so he can use it and then use it to teach his kids. I just have no idea how well the modified or improved cylinder will knock a bird down. If he can't kill something he will not be happy.

i started on a single shot 410 on squirrels and rabbits, went through a whole box within a week  ;D now i know why i have hearing problems then

use a full choke and fire away

I started out on a single shot 410. Go with a full choke.

I would use a full choke, shooting a single shot 410 will make him a better shot IMO.  I started my son on that and i think he shoots better than me and he is 10.  I think when a kid shoots a single single shot they seem to try harder cus they know there is only 1 shot, and he won't go through as many rounds as a pump.  ;)

I had a bolt action 22. I was real good. When I got a 10/22 my aim got worse because I had more shots. With the world getting smaller that 22 goes further than a 410 so I figure it will be safer for everyone else. We may be cooking up some rabbit while my wife and daughter go out to eat ;D Nothing gives you that feeling like going out and getting dinner with your gun. Anybody got good rabbit recipes? My wife just got a new crock pot ;D

Rossie has a nice 410/22 interchangeable barrels, might not be as accurate as the longer barrels tho.

The 510 comes in 410 or 20..... Get the 20.

Food for thought... I got my son this combo with the snake charmer stock and hammer extension. Gun is nice and shoots well but only weighs about 3lbs. Almost all of the recoil will be taken through the shoulder. I started my 6 yr old on 9shot to get him used to the gun and slowly moved from there. i have a red dot in the 22 barrel and I plan on letting him getting some tree rats this year.

Dub i have a mossberg 500 and it came with the improved, modified and full choke, might want to hit up a gun store and double check.  Ive had mine for a year or six.

Dub, if he were my boy I'd start him on a 20 ga. if he can handle it ok. You will have to be the judge of that since we don't know his size or build. I would give you this word of advice,...you might think seriously about getting him started hunting on squirrels and rabbits.....which are so much easier to hit than a dove,....certainly for a beginner. This will boost his confidence level and that is a big deal for a kid. Heck, I know grown men that have hunted all their lives and still can't hit a dove on the wing.  :o Just my 2 cents......good luck whatever you choose.

I hunt with an over & Under 410. Started with single shot 40 yrs ago. Hmmm. Full choke,stock tank, dead tree and mojos.

They have alot of youth shot guns available now, all shapes and sizes.

i love a 410 was my first shot gun i have 2 still i have killed everything with it from rabbits to deer an hogs with a slug i still hunt deer an hog with them i have a 7mm and 30-30 but it dose better then most shotguns i can shoot a 3 1/2in group at 100 yard with about 6 inch drop it depends on the length of the barrel! get him one! :)

I agree 100%.  My dad started me with the exact same setup.  He would not let me move up in caliber till I could consistently shoot whatever game we where hunting.  When i did finally get a 12 gauge it was not a big transition.

hey if your wanting to go with a single shot the rossie is pretty good ive got a 410/17 and it has taken alot of rabbits in its time....if you want pm me and we could work sumthen out

i know it's not a 410 but it's what i started with...  Remington 870 in 28gauge.  took dove, squirrel, and quail with it.  and it's available in a youth model.

My son is currently shooting one of the Rossi 410/22 combo rifles, and he's wearing the birds out with it.  We went yesterday afternoon and he shot 7, and actually knocked two down with one shot.  You should have heard him crow!!  Little turd shot better than me last night, and dang sure better than I shot when I was 9...

I would go with an automatic 20 it will have the same kick on either gun.

Dub, any of the above advice will be fine as long as you and him are together, that's where we all need to offer our experience and guidance to any youngsters to help them grow into decent young men.

410 can get discouraging on a small kid not much lead sent down range
