I like dove hunting but don't have a retriever any more. I have acur dog that will catch birds out of the air in the yard though. That got me thinking about using a cur dog to find the birds in the high grass more than retrieve them. If you have looked in the grass you know what I'm talking about. But I just wonder if the bird would get eaten. I guess the dog could get its fill and that would not be in my possesion ;D

Trying to get my lacy dog to do it don't know if it going to work she can find them but is gun shy lol kinda have a problem there.

I tried it with mine... you gotta be quick gettin to them. He turns them into a one bite snack!

I have a 12 year old APBT that will retrieve birds for me. When she had canines she would poke holes in the bird but now they are broke or gone so I don't have that problem anymore.

I would be worried about my cur dogs lineage if it had any retrieving instincts.  But you could train them to locate the bird while on leash and take the bird from them real quick or before they get it.

I did not think about a leash. I know there only a few feathers left in the yard when one get caught so I would have to be right there. I may try a leash just to see if she will figure out to find them.

If you are serious about makin her a bird dog then train her a little more, then if she keeps tearing the birds up then wrap bobwire around the bird and throw and let her get it.. Trust me that will be the last time she bites on the bird!!  ;D.  It has worked for me and I'm sure it will work for u too..

I don't want a full time bird dog. I have a gyp I think tries real hard to do whatever I want. I will have to ease her into guns but I can just have her staked out. Bring back birds myself and let her smell them so she knows what I want. I just don't want her chasing birds when hog hunting. I have heard people claim they use curs for cows, squirrels, and hogs. They just tell the dog what they want. She does not trash at all right now and I care more about finding hogs than birds. I just want to know how many people can have a cur do other things and still not trash on them hunting hogs.

Seems like I read somewhere one time that the right trainer can make ANY dog do ANYTHING and do it proficiently.

Then again, I might have just dreamed that up.

you might need to get a well bred weimeraner, german shorthair or wirehair. They are bred for bird and boar...

I used to have a catahoula I would.take dove hunting. Trained her to find and retrieve the birds. She picked up on it pretty quick. At first she would try to eat the birds, but with a little discipline she stopped that and would just bring the bird straight to us.
