I'm curious, at what age do you personally like to dub your stags?  I used to wait until they were 1 year old, but I've got 2 pea-combed studs I'm jonesing to trim.

Around 8 months to a year and use the farmers almanac and dub when the signs are in the groin ir knees, they will bleed very little and be healed over and in about two weeks you will hardly be able to tell.

I always hear about going by the book, but I've never paid it much mind in the past. I've trimmed plenty of birds, and I have never had an issue. Generally, I do comb, wattles, and lobes. In all seriousness, have you personally seen a difference?  If so, please PM some of the negative issues you've seen. Ive always wondered if I was just lucking up as to when I did it.

I never believed it either but I put it to the test against the almanac and dubbed with the signs in the head and they bled a ton, seemed to hurt them more and took near a month to heal vs the week n a half and scab off and looking good, very little blood when done etc.   I have done it/used it with dogs ear trims as well with the same results.

Try it both ways and see what you think, im a believer.

I know at times in the past, it was messy. My fear of cutting them now is that they will continue to grow, making the "flat-top". I don't want that. When I finally decide it's time, I'll give the book time a try. It's worth a shot. I've always wanted to hear from someone who has tested the theory instead of just doing it because "Grandpa" said so. Thank you for sharing your experience. It is appreciated.

I have trimmed them at night with no moon if you can do it without getting them all stirred up works good heals fast. I also use the almanac cutting my kids show hogs or a colt Its always worked.

I followed the signs per the dates posted in the "Gamecock".  You made me a believer. 2 drops of blood and that was it. I could not believe it. Definitely the way to go. Thank you again.

the day before you do yur trimming . give them a 20 of vita k . that helps to with the bleeding

When I went to pen them I would trim them , usally at night since they would be roosted easier to catch

use to raise around 300 stags a year always heard the old timers say go by the signs. but when you work 10to12 hours you trim them when you can if your gonna dub 20 give some vit-k if they bleed to death being trimed you probly did need them in the first place. ive had them all my life. think i had 2 die think they died of shock instead of bleeding to death.

Right before you start to miss with them!!!Any time would work..they will be ready to go in a week or so!

I did it for 25 years i did it when i was off work and my sissors were sharp never lost one. i think it is better if it is cool weather but you can't always wait on the weather.
