Title: Good New Mexico Boar 310 lbs
Post by: scout1 on October 16, 2011, 03:22:16 pm
Me and my partner Jed decided to hit up a spot we have out on the river for a hunt.  After hitting up one place with no luck, we decided to go to the thick and nasty ( Salt Cedars ).  The dogs ended up rigging from the truck and lit out,  finally after a few minutes, we heard my little red pup open up about 250 yards into the cedars.  We both looked at each other and thought it could be trash - since she is a pup.  A couple minutes later Glenco ( finished dog) got to her and opened up and the other dogs got there also and the bay was on.   I was so excited for that pup - she struck her very first hog!  We got within around 200 yards and decided to kick the catch dog (whiskey) loose - and also turned Dan ( young catch dog ) loose.  And we headed towards the bay.  It took us about 20 minutes to get to the bay crawling, under salt cedars in the dark.  We got within 20 yards and did not hear a squeel or a grunt - just a couple dogs barking.  We crawled in closer and I heard a cur dog chewing on him - so we knew he had to be caught.  Sure enough ol' Whiskey was caught, Dan was caught ( his first catch in the woods ) and two or three curs were caught and the hog was dragging all of them around.  Jed legged the hog and we both realized he was a big boar, ended up sticking him.  Whiskey had been caught for a while and thought we were gonna loose him - he was hot.  Then we heard a couple dogs open up again about 300 yards out, we got the catch dog cooled off and headed that way - the second hog ended up breaking and running 500 yards - to make a long story short we ended up loosing the second hog - SALT CEDARS ARE ROUGH.  We gathered dogs and could not believe that no one was cut at all, Whiskey the catch dog took a stick in the eye - which hopefully he will be ok.  Finally got the boar to the truck where we weighed him from the scale hanging from the top rail of the box - 310 lbs.  HECK YA.  Good hog with a good outcome.  I am real proud of my little red pup for finding her own hog - and the catchdog did well also for his first hog.

this is a view from the outside, usually the salt cedars grow along a waterway, and they are almost like vines with leaves that usually go from the top to the bottom with a ton of branches...they are super hard to walk or crawl through and its where alot of animals hides during the day because of the shade and cover.....

not the greatest picture, wish i could find one from the inside to show you, hard seeing past the end of your hand....

Looks thick, can you get "under it" by low crawling or you gotta just push your way through it?

in most areas there is no getting under, if you are where it is about 10' tall, the undergrowth may not be quite as bad, but usually just have to try to push your way through, moving it side to side where is isn't as thick of branches....

only savior in some areas is  that the animals will make trails through it, in the case of hogs if you want to crawl through their trail, have at it, thats where they may be coming when they make a break for it....just hope you aren't on the same one lol.

I know there is similar vegetation in FL and TX, not salt cedars, but thick stuff, can't win, of course the hogs are going to go for it when they need to get away or to fight
