Title: Best place in texas to hunt
Post by: Rusty Knife on October 31, 2011, 06:54:58 pm
Alright guys, where in Texas is the best over all place to hunt hogs?  I ask, because still being active duty military, ive dedicated my life to hunting hogs here in Hawaii on my off time but sure do plan to return back to the mainland- and TEXAS is where the wife wants to go!! YAHTZEE!!  ;D So with a large family (5 kids), looking for a nice country but civilized place to live, where would yall recommend a great place to live and to raise a family and a great place to hunt with large amounts of hogs?

Angelina county, live in Nacogdoches hunt deer leases all over. Lots of hogs all over, but alot of places you'll have trouble ever getting permission.

Honestly,i think nth.central tx. anywhere far enough outside the DFW metroplex is good people, good weather and a hog hunters dream. Reason i say this is there is not near as many hogdoggers but tonnes of hogs, especially around residential and civilised areas where people will beg you to come and hunt them. Hope you find your dream spot.

Central Texas,  What I have always like about living in Cameron is it is right in the middle of everything.  A small town with great schools , great people tons of hogs .   When I say right in the middle I mean 30 miles to Temple/Killeen and I 35 also 50 miles to Waco,  70 miles from Austin ,  150 miles to San Antonio , 125 to Houston , 150 to Dallas Ft Worth and we are right slap dab in the middle of all of them.

Depends on what type of terrain you like. I like trees myself so east Texas is my home lots of hogs in angelina and neches river bottoms but lots of hunters and most is deer leases. You just about have to pay to play now adays. But man if you got hogs in Hawaii why leave?

Why leave Hawaii?! Lol sheesh is that not a easy question to answer I don't know what is!! The islands of Hawaii is beautiful, absolutely one of the worlds most incredible places I've ever been, thanks to all you generous tax payers  ;D. But on the flip side, it's extremely expensive! A gallon of milk will average $7-11 dollars depending where you buy it, a dozen eggs will run you close to $5.50 and a damn glass of bourbon will just about make you broke.  Here the land is very mountainous, imagine tropical rainforest in a mountainous setting, gorgeous but you break your *%# every time you hunt.  Gets old real quick!
I've looked in central and east Texas for homes and cities and I've had people tell me any where between San Antonio to Austin is great.  I've looked online in San Marcos, New braunsfeld (spelling) area but haven't really scene anythig that stood out.  I'm hoping i don't have to "pay to play" as one said, just hoping I can find a nice place to settle down yet a great vacinity to hunt.  I've got all the things I need from a custom built trailer to dogs to the half dozen gps tracking collars.  Now it's that place to call home and that honey hole that I can hunt atleast once a week!
For those still wondering why I'm tired of hunting Hawaii, going into the mountain at 3am and not getting home until 8pm that night, doesn't make it convenient to just run the dogs.  I really have to be good that week or the wife just won't have it. Lol thanks for yalls input, I'll definantly look into all those areas!

well, if money is a priority, you might want to consider your trade as well as your wife's...Then find a town where you can find decent jobs that has lots of hog hunting around which most places in Texas has the hogs...

Victoria, Texas, is not a bad place... City is not too big and you would be close to some big Chemical plants, not too far from Corpus Christ, San Antonio, Austin and Houston is 125 miles away...Plus you are close enough to the Hill country and a skip and a hop from South Texas which is full of all kinds of game and big deer...You can probably hunt in any direction from Victoria but then there are lots of places like that in Texas...Good luck 8)

You may find some conflicting answers but no arguments cos as far as im concerned TEXAS is the next best thing to heaven. Originally from australia,i moved to texas for 8 years and have now been in oklahoma for almost 3,i sure do miss the ol yellow rose. Anyway, since your used to the warm weather almost year round, dont be afraid to stock up on some winter woolies for the family wherever u decide to go,in texas it could be 85 degrees and when one of them ol blue northers blows in it will flip a bitch on you and be 30 degrees and snowing, doesnt happen often but sure can get a lot colder than hawaii.

HAHAHA That's funny. I wish they didn't run down here. Some of these suckers just cut up dogs then hit that thick ol mesquite and huiache like its nothing, and leaves the dogs in the dust!!!

im definantly looking for a area with some trees.  A place i dont have to break my back literally to catch a hog.  I dont mind walkin, i dont mind getting dirty, but im tired of hunting these mountains.  I had been looking around the georgetown area all the way down to corpus christy.  I heard many of you say that there are deer leases? Are those that you pay to hunt? or is that property you dont get access to hunt? I really do appreciate all the info fellas...keep it coming!

Dude if you find a deer lease that is free in Texas it's not worth crap.  Texas is one if not the highest at leasing land at a crazy prise.  I pay almost $3,000 per year where i hunt so good luck with free hunting.  Plenty of places to hunt but you have to pay to play!

East Texas and central are going to be your best bet on the swine part. You can't beat south Texas whitetail tho. Its going to be hard to come to Texas and get land to hunt. You may have to use the buddy system for a while.

:o  If it comes to where i have to pay 3,000 a year to shoot a deer, i will take T-bobs idea of hunting with a heavy duty bumper...  ;)  ;D

I didn't invent it, just perfected it  ;)

There's lots of deer leases up and down east Texas that are very reasonable priced, 500-1000 dollars per year, and my point is that its often easier to pay for a lease with the agreement that you can run dogs and Barr hogs in the off season than making dozens of contacts over the years and having small acreage places to hunt for free. If your really likeable and just run into the right landowners you may get lucky, but most farmers here in my county either have their own hunters already, or will threaten to shoot you and your dogs if they ever so much as hear a bay on their property.

Freestone County!!! Tons and tons of hogs in open country if your wanting numbers.. The dogs can finally stretch out their legs. Those are where the majority of our 20 hog days come from.

Walker & Trinity county for BIG, nasty barr hogs!

Any OPEN country where your not hunting 2000 acre youpon thickets is the best for us

Central Texas is a great place but its going down hill.  WAY too many people now days.  I personally would stay away from the major population areas;  Houston metroplex, Austin-SanAntonio Metroplex or Dallas Metroplex.  Just too crowded for me.

I would choose a place with as few people possible but still be able to find work.  Northeast Texas.  Central coastal Plains around victoria, Or around Abilene.
