Title: Open Dogs Cant Catch Hogs!
Post by: TShelly on November 03, 2011, 02:56:21 pm
Boogie is a 3.5 year old red cur dog that Big E owns. For the last few months our good buddy JJ has been hunting him up in Gods Country north of us.

About 3 weeks ago JJ came home from work and saw that hogs had hot the feeders behind his house. So at 730 am he turned Boogie and 2 of his dogs, slim and tonto loose. He caught 3 hogs right off the bat and then the dogs split with Tonto and Slim baying a good boar hog and boogie falling bayed 1/2 mile out. JJ could tell it was a young fat boar so he decided to leave his two dogs working that boar and went to Boogie..

Hog after hog, boogie kept baying and rolling off. After 2 hours and still not being able to catch Boogie he went back to his 2 which were still hammering on that fat boar and got him caught. Finally at 3:30 that afternoon JJ got his hands on Boogie at the last hog

He caught 11 total that day and 7 in front of Boogie by hisself!!

Boogie is some kind of open cur dog though. When he's hunting he'll usually give one bark when he's getting close to finding the hog and then will straight sing to one while running! You hear people talk about open dogs not being able to catch hogs and so on.. Too me it doesn't matter a dog is either a hog dog or not, regardless of open or tight mouthed. The good ones get it done no matter what... Enjoy! More of a story, than pictures. JJ's phone died so he only got the first one

Good story Tony.  You should send that pup out of Boogie to me since you are so busy with school!!  I would hate for a puppy to get in the way of your studies.  ;D

Real good looking dog, I used to hunt with a friend who ran a open cat. And he could get it done, I think an open dog just needs more skill to make up for its big mouth. Hope the pup turns out for you.

A good, fast dog that runs to catch will catch hogs even if he had blue lights and a siren.

Good job.  All I've ever run is open dogs.  Get tired of all the BS people talk about them.  Open or closed it don't matter.

@ Rueben.. No redbone. Probably 1/64 plott and some B&T blood from woodruffs ranch way back when but mostly cur dog

TShelly...a few good hound qualities in a good cur dog can be a real good thing. :)

Thanks for sharing Tony. Back in the day we always had at least one open dog, heck that was a poor man's tracking system. An open dog on a hot track is not a bad thing contrary to popular belief, lol. I can't tolerate a dog bawling in small circles in any type of hunting, a few coon dogs that I owned in the past come to mind. That's a nice looking pup!

I agree...and I know what you mean about a coon dog that takes 3 hrs. and 6 miles of cold trailing just to jump the hog 1/4 of a mile from where he started a track...and the other dogs don't pay him any mind cause they think he is lying... rolleyes ;D I've done that one too...

Good Story Tony.......It can be a pain in the arse when they get old an slow and hogs wont bay for chit.  I was just about ready to cull my old brindle gyp last week.  I put 12 miles on her that morning but didn't get any bayed.  The way she was hunting she must have been mistaken and thought she was a dang hound.  I thought she lost he mind was a blabber mouth the whole day, would not check in, or even come in.  I treid to called her in she turned and went the opposite direction.  I think I started 5 hogs that day and came up with nothing.  I was wondering who stole my dogs and put look alike culls in thier place.

I have been out of hunting hogs for awhile. But back in the day we caught many hogs with dogs that opened. The yellow dogs and leopards we had  opened then drifted 100 or 200 and opened again until they were looking at them. We did not use pits our dogs bayed till we got there and were told to catch. Nothing wrong with a dogs that opens and drift ton rack. We wanted to hear the race and we didn't have these electronics. But of course that was many years ago when our dogs were expected and breed to do it our way. Happy hinting and God Bless

Open or closed mouth is cool with me as long as the dog hunts and finds hogs!!!!!!!!I had an open mouthed dog and caught just as many pigs with him as I did my silent dogs plus he was much easier to locate ;)
