Title: Need some help
Post by: Rusty Knife on December 10, 2011, 12:00:29 am
I have a 16 month old pit female that's been scene 4-5 hogs.  Awesome dog in the mountain but shows absolutely no interest in catching or in the pig for that matter.  I don't know what to do.  Any suggestions?

id start by taking another CD that will catch get u a pig and send that dog! hold ur dog making it eager to get in on it, next time send both the dogs ur dogs will propably help, once it taste blood its game on from there... then send ur dog alone.

make the pig squeal....keep working the dog, then carry to to the woods and let the dog know that alot of barking means work time...theres alot you could do...just one of SEVERAL ideas

key is to be patient dnt stress and get tense about it!

Thanks for the reply Dylan.  But among all the dogs in the pack- when we hit a pig she just looks around as if she's chasing butter flys in her head.  I tried getting her all excited before going into a pen letting her watch the other dogs work, she's scene an heard the pigs be worked and seems not to pay any attention at all.  Everytime we hit a hog and she doesn't pay any interest I tell myself that she needs to go, but I know I need to be patient.  She just doesn't care. Extremely frustrating.

i get the free pits from places around here some of them will catch  some will not seems to me that if u get a pig sqealing dogs barking the pit will snap out of it and go.  some  will not  ive messed with them and think the dog will work but they will let u down in bind to me if the pit isnt glassy eyed when it hears a bay then its over. just my opinion. its hard to raise a dog and cull it but i like catching hogs not chasing them.

Ok so after ur reply man, id recommend u gettin u a lil aggressive boar or a sow and throwin her in there with the pig, eventually they'll get tired of getting whooped up on and that lightswitch will turn on any second and then u got urself a caught hog!

IMO theres a switch that hasn't been turned on yet just a well tempered dog sounds like to me...now once she hits like a train, then get excited and get hyped up this will show her that its wat u want her to do.

I'm not sure where you got your info about once they taste blood its game on from there but you made need to check it again. A dog tasting blood don't mean a d*** thing. That is just bs and the last thing anyone needs to hear about any dog, much less an APBT.

Just my two cents. You can't make a dog hunt. If you try to force it you will end up with an aggressive dog. Put her with a dog catching or ways to show her what the game is. But if she don't want to hunt then find a pet home for her.

too many dogs in the world, why have one that wont do there job?  Dogs are a dime a dozen, get another.  If you want to have good dogs you must learn to cull hard.  Find a line of dogs you like, invest in one, and it will improve the odds of getting what you want.  Good dogs arent a accident!

i believe that once a dog gets a taste of blood from something there pursuing there more
enthused to go and being around dogs all my life ive found that up-coming pups once they strike
there first pig and get messy with it they hunt better after that... DOES IT MAGICALLY MAKE THEM A STRIKE DOG? NO! never said that... was just stating that she gets a lil messy she may be more turned on about going...

Some dogs work and some don't. Tasting blood has nothing to do with it. Like was stated in another post if she won't work make her a pet, find her a pet home or whatever. The whole tasting blood thing is an old wive's tale.

I agree... dog either has it or they don't. No need to force it when other dogs out there would love to be in the woods working. Either pet or hunting partner, that is the question.
