Title: Who all dogs cowboy style? Post by: BaynSlay on December 10, 2011, 07:51:30 pm What i mean by cowboy style is when your dogs bay, you ride a horse in the bay, rope the hog, and drag them in the trailer. Im interested because i catch cattle for people and think itd be cool to combine that and hog dogging. I need advice on dogs like range and grittiness yall prefer. Thanks

In the woods we have to keep breaking the bay till it gets open enough to get a rope on one. Longs as the dogs shut one down good they'll work. Its alot easier with a bull dog but its fun off horses.
If you can get one to break across an open pasture or cut grain field is when it gets fun. The hogs will break down(slow down) and ut gets easier to rope. Just rope tied off role your slack over their back and let your horse duck out. Keep the rope tight and let some one else jump on the hog. If it gets slack in the rope most of the time the hog gets away... Title: Re: Who all dogs cowboy style? Title: Re: Who all dogs cowboy style? Post by: Caseydejohn on December 10, 2011, 08:46:32 pm Some of them hunt with us till in hog sigh and some hunt pretty deep. It really don't matter to me long as they got alot of bottom.
My old bull dog will lay across a saddle until he hears the bay. I used to hunt the national forest a bunch and that's all we could ride and im not all about walking! Title: Re: Who all dogs cowboy style? Post by: cward on December 11, 2011, 09:17:43 am We rope alot just like Casey said. Most of us around our area were taught to hunt by cowboys alot of them never used a catch dog and had loose baying dogs they would stand in the saddle and jump into the hog and I'm talking big hogs. We would watch the hog ahead of the dogs shaking palmetos and we would take to him on horse screaming the dogs learned to listen us and they would quit the track and come flying by us going to stop the hog. me and my wife have roped w crap load together. The dog styles are just like Casey said. On horseback its better to have a dog that leaves when in sign. Bottom is great. Find bay and stay.

Post by: brandeek1 on December 15, 2011, 01:16:02 am Wish my husband would go horseback so I could ride but he prefers to wait on the bay, drive up on four wheeler, step off n hobble hog, load hog onto front of bike then he gets back on bike n goes on. I wanna hunt horseback dang it. Lol.
