EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Got a hunt lined up with my hunting buddy Chris last night.  He said bring enough dogs to catch a hog because he wasn't bringing any.  I brought Moto, Speedy, Nugget, Shayla(Krystal's dog) and Cotton to catch.  We made our way around a creek bottom with out any luck then turned back toward the truck when Mo and Nugget hit a trail and went across a cut rice field. Mo opened first and the hog tried to run but the dogs got him stopped and bayed solid in the middle of the field.  We eased Cotton in and turned him loose to seal the deal.  I was proud of the dogs for stopping the hog in the wide open and keeping him bayed.

This morning we had a first timer come on a hunt with us.  He is a fellow from Oregon, Mike, who is traveling around the country and stopped in Weimar due to the terrain here.  He was referred to us by a county employee and wanted to go on a hog hunt.  I told him he was welcome to come along and explained how we did things.  He was a little hesitant at first but really wanted a Texas hog.  Krystal brought Roo, Brandi, FoShizzel, TBird, Karma and Smooch and ole Mike H brought a couple.  We headed toward a rose hedge thicket that usually holds hogs and sure enough they were there.  We got one stopped and sent the catch dogs in.  I told Mike to follow me as I found a trail through the rose hedges and found the hog caught right in the middle of the trail.  I legged the hog and Krystal showed Mike where to insert his knife to dispatch the hog properly.  We drug the hog out and made a round but did not start any more hogs.  Mike was very grateful and enjoyed his first dog hunt.

T-Brain is an ETHD SPECIAL Cocktail  ;) Tweety/Buck that is MattAggies/DeMoon puppy that is here on a visitors pass me to put on some extra pork for a few weeks. I like him too.

I saw my favorite coloring and was just about to ask.  Is he hitting pretty good or just starting out?  No doubt his genetics should have him moving around pretty good.  I got a litter of half brothers and sisters to him that will be five months old in a few weeks that I'm pretty fond of already.

When he was 8 months old he would go every step with his aunt and mother but he is just now showing some interest in baying.  I think when he turns on he is going to be the kind but it has taken him 18 months to start barking and showing interest.  His build, attitude and hunt are EXACTLY what I wish everydog I owned was like.

T-Brain as i call him, (gets his real name back when he graduates) has not lacked one ounce of hunt, somebody forgot to show him a puppy flash card of a hog, and tell him thats what he was looking for. He GOTS ALOT GO YONDER, no doubt. NOw Aunt Krystal and her Ugly mutts gave him the brain fart he needed and he is going in the right direction. He is baying great! Today was first opportunity in the "REAL WILD" (not a simulated) to show me if his schooling is working and HE DONE GOOD. T-Brain was out hunting, he got a little messed up when a sloppy hound went to standing on a tree baying he honored the hound for about ten seconds and went on back out and was at the hog when I got there and rolled out after the other hogs as soon as I told the older dogs to "get ahead" he went with them. When I got done taking pics of the man with his sow and drug her out into open. I checked on Garmin he was out over the hill out of sight at about 600yds trailing back where some of the other hogs went, the two old gyps went to the West. a couple times he was by himself at 800 + yards when I would check . We never did get on anything else, I am confident those hogs kept running for a good long ways before checking up again when they left. they have been pressured alot this year.

I am just so happy you got him barking good!  If his light has come on now, this spring he is going to be something special to watch.

That whole litter has been slow to start, but I think some are gonna make us real proud this year.

Matt, I agree with YOU!!! Here is my fear, SOME PEOPLE, wont mention any names are going to be scared they are going loose him and afraid to hunt him, or think he hunts too deep to hunt certain places and leave him home.
IF THIS WERE MY DOG, I would take him every time I go, he has a great temperament, easy to get along with, handles real nice, level headed dog, with a real big motor and extra fuel tanks, Can you tell I think alot of him already too and he ain't been here long.

Haha yeah, we will have to work on that.  I have a sister here to his dogs I may swop him for during the spring if that is the case  ;)

If they're scared to hunt him... send him back home to the piney woods!!!

Sounds like he's on par.  I think a little slow to start was to be expected.  Does he show to be a little rough or catchy?

Bryant so far No, also I have not given him that opportunity. He was old enough to work on big hogs and I did not give him any squealers. He has went right to work on hogs big enough to respect, except one little mean son-of-a gun. This dog travels really fluid is pretty for me to watch him work, alot of stamina with the weather being cool I have extended my lesson times and try to see what this leggy dog could take and how long to break him. He is passing with flying colors he will stay with as long as I allow him, a couple times he looked like he was getting broke and I pull him out before that point. I rather not encourage them to be stupid rough, no need to teach the behavior, it comes natural enough to plenty of dogs. He likes to move with a hog and rate the hog and then check it when he feel confident and then will back himself out again, and IMO just like a BAY dog should do. I mean he could be roughed up or run with a bunch of rough stuff and encouraged to get rough but in my opinion this dog in his raw natural talent, does not want to pressure a hog. I think he is gong to run a track for the pure nature of the hunt and bay. He showed me today he rolled off and immediately went back to using his nose and left out from like a seasoned dog. I did not spend 90 seconds telling any dogs I brought to get off that hog, they all left on their own except the one hound in the picture. Thats the way I want my dogs to behave when I hunt with people from ETHD, instead we chase armadillos or something, just for today it went right.

Matt and Mike - He may fire me as his dog trainer for saying all that, but I just pleased to see this performing up to expected genetic expectations! and hope enough us stay on/ after it T-Bird will get a chance to show himself as a 2 year old  ;D

I have two full sisters to T-Bird and let mee tell ya they look just like him.One is a little slower to get started but the other is turning on awesome.Leddy,the more impressive of the two,is a loose baying gyp that will pull hair if needed but she circes the hog so fast she keeps em spinnin till they just give up and stand there.She hunts hard and will find em but both of these gyps will get out there and dont seem to ever run out of energy.

IMO,this line of dogs are the way true hog dogs should be,but dont get me wrong any style of dog or dog that produces the pork is a hog dog.
These dogs just seem to be easier to work with.They are eager to please and have the build and brains to do so.

Post some pics when you get a chance and keep us updated. Whenever they make the grade, there's plenty of males available to line breed back to... ;)

I aint scared ;D

I guess Krystal speaks canine better than me, so I decided to let her work with him until deer season is over.  Every time I've taked him to the woods he has showed a lot of range, but just hasn't showed any interest in a hog.  The last time I showed him a hog before I took him to Krystal's, he climbed out of the round pen and headed out on a track of a butterfly or something. ???  Keep up the good work Krystal & I'll come pick him up when I put my deer rifle down.  I can't wait to hunt him with his half brother & sister all Spring!!
