Two years ago I had three treeing walkers that I loved. They covered lots of ground, hunted hard, and could smoke a track. I got it done with those three. Havnt hunted behind many hounds but the ones I hav hunted with were walker. I still like cur dogs the best but if I had to choose a hound it would be walker. I do hav a half plott pup that was given to me that's turning out to be pretty good....

Well i haven't owned any full hounds but if i had to choose one it would be the one that found and caught hogs for me with my style of hunting !!

in my life we have had many types of hunting dogs, the plotts we have are by far the best in nearly every way. But we have had some good blues but they bark to much for me but other than that they were great. the american bulldog I have now is top notch as well so for me it is plotts and ab's.

I know there are good and bad in all breeds, but as a whole I would have to go with any of the foxhound / running breeds over a tree bred dog any day.

I've heard that Vaughn and Henry plott would not refer to plotts as hounds. But I think plotts are more consistent

that is true lapdog when i was a young man plotts were cur dogs then a select FEW in the breed decided they should be hounds and started breeding for the more houndy traits we see today just goes to show what can happen to a breed of dogs in as little as 40 years or so

running hound bred to catch and kill coyotes bred back to a gritty mtn cur...might be open but wouldn't matter...if you like catching hogs...

I say plott because thats my personal preference and what I hunt.
BUT.....its not so much the breed as the individual dog. Ive owned them all, and seen good and bad in all of them.
Just pick the color you like best, then research lines with the traits that suit your style of hunting, and go from there. Keep the ones that work and cull the ones that don't.
but I will say stay with big game bred hounds, top and bottom.

I have had redbones and walkers like em both my redbones where my favorite didn't need a catch dog they was strike then catch. Walkers was kinda stand back and bay. Got a bmc/ walker now a year old and turning out to be a bad novo.

It all depends on what you like. Do you want a hard hunting, hot nosed hound such as the running walker, trig, and july or do you want a colder nosed dog like the plott, blue/red tick & redbone. You just have to find the dog that suits you and your terrain.

I have a friend thats a plott fanatic so I hunted with about every kinda plott there is the  only one that ever impressed me was pocohantas bred  she wasn't that fast but had plenty bottom and did run to catch up and  did show me some hogs . But if  I was goin straight hound it would be Lipper bred treeing walker. They strike fast, run hard and put pork at the end of the race .

Never owned a hound hound but I have hunted behind an excelent plott and bluetick. I have been really impressed with both, more bottom on both these dogs than few have seen. If i had to choose though, plott gets my vote because its a little faster on trail.

The best breed of hound is one that has been bred in a man's yard that hunts the hair off of them.

X2 I been doing some homework after getting out run cause of no huntin, bay chasing dogs. I am headed to get me sometimes leopard cur. I can't say there any good yet but if they smoke a track, heads up and run to catch I will really enjoy hearing them and catching hogs.....time will tell

Rhodesian Ridgeback is my favorite.  There are many lines that hold different traits but the original lines that are from Africa are bred for straight working.  Incredible temperaments, cover lots of ground, and know how to use there size to take one big boar down.  JMO

Kinda see your point, but aren't ridgebacks in the hound group according to the AKC? Ialso believe the saluki, pharaoh hound and otterhound are in there technically.

I used to see plott curs advertised at one time...

Leopard curs are still advertised but almost 50% are now called leopard hounds...
