Paul, them hairy dogs may work great in that wide open country... but I don't think they'd fare to well in an East Texas pine thicket. Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: skunkhounds on December 31, 2011, 06:57:06 pm get some dogs that are gonna put some teeth on the hog and make it stop and fight or get some loose bay dogs with lots of bottom and run it until it gets tired and has to stop

Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: Peachcreek on December 31, 2011, 08:06:13 pm paul those are some fine looking dogs. do they have lots of bottom or are they fast enough they dont need it?
Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: Reuben on December 31, 2011, 09:06:21 pm you need a dog that will stick to the track until he brings to bay what is making those tracks...adding some good hound or mtn cur should help...or like others have said you might need a different strain of BMC or CAT cur...
Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: hogdogger98 on December 31, 2011, 09:19:48 pm Guys thanks but its not the dogs they have bayed 200 hogs in the last 3 months. But there is 1 place that I can't seem to stop them they are mostly pure Russian and they run hard and fast. I just need some ideas on what to cross to get more speed and bottom or just quit hunting that spot
Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: arrowbar on December 31, 2011, 09:27:25 pm running hounds like stags and grey, july and fox would do as well and some strains of coon hound would work, but you might also look into changing the way you hunt and keeping a second string back in the box so when the race gets heated you can drop some fresh dogs in.
Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: SCHitemHard on December 31, 2011, 09:31:11 pm 200 hogs in 3 months? you sure bout this? i mean im just a ol internet hunter but still thats more succesful than the guys that do this as a day job

Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: UNDERDOG on December 31, 2011, 09:58:53 pm Guys thanks but its not the dogs they have bayed 200 hogs in the last 3 months. But there is 1 place that I can't seem to stop them they are mostly pure Russian and they run hard and fast. I just need some ideas on what to cross to get more speed and bottom or just quit hunting that spot Bayed or caught? ? That's 2.2 hogs a day...how often you hunt? Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: hogdogger98 on December 31, 2011, 10:18:49 pm Bayed!! Not caught that would be awesome. We have been baying huge bunches like 20 to 40 in a bunch. I not exagerating at all I promise.
Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: SCHitemHard on December 31, 2011, 10:33:08 pm gotcha. were most of them runners? bayin 200 sounds alittle better. i was bout to ask if you got a extra room to hunt for a month. id get some rust busted off this back with that many hogs caugh
Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: 3-Bdogs on December 31, 2011, 10:56:34 pm Well imo sometimes it dosent matter what type or how good your dogs are your gonna lose some hogs and sometimes your dogs go thru slumps its all about timing in my mind

I just need some ideas on what to cross to get more speed and bottom or just quit hunting that spot if it is that one place that is giving you problems it could be the terrain...might be the vegetation is too thick and the dogs can not keep up...Try one loose bay dog and a couple of walk in catch dogs... Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? There is one place I have to hunt that I've been 7 or 8 times caught hogs twice and ran hogs the rest of the time. That is what is aggrevating I hate running hogs with a passion.Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: YELLOWBLACKMASK on January 01, 2012, 01:15:29 am If you are dis satisfied with the Ybmc that you are running. Try a different line.
YBMC are the answer to every question you may have. Truly they cure everything including herpes. ;D NO 90 % GO 100% BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: Boar Collector on January 06, 2012, 11:33:45 am Dogs with the bottom to stick with one till it bays... doesn't matter what breed it is. I agree with this. A hog that wants to run, and can run, is going to until it makes it to its house! Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? X2 There is no substitute for a dog with endless bottom...although that is a double edged sword. Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: bullet72 on January 06, 2012, 05:46:36 pm some hogs will not stop no dog is the magic dog it may bay for 3 minutes catch a breath and go again rcd's will stop this but u may not be there in time thats why its called hunting not harvesting
Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? If your dogs will NOT quit a hog, it is going to bay somewhere. Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: hoghunter71409 on January 06, 2012, 08:10:37 pm I think you otta try a plott. My plotts aint real rough but they stick with the runner until he stops. It may be 4-6 hours, sometimes they close the gap and sometimes the hog stretches the gap, but they stay with it until you either cut them off or the hog stops. Poor hog, once he stops he is caught by plotts. My plotts will catch the hog as soon as he stops, a lot of times before I can get there. Your answer..a good plott. They are very hard to beat. Read some threads and you will see a lot of guys say thier lead strike dog is a plott or plott cross. JMO
Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: PKT on January 06, 2012, 08:39:41 pm Have you ever thought ???
the dogs you have might be running a DEER ?? Deer seem to keep running and running and running >:D Hard to make one stop and bay up. Title: Re: Best dogs for running hogs? Post by: Kid7 on January 07, 2012, 09:24:51 pm If you put a rough dog on a runner hav a vet on speed dial.... Or hav a cut kit reeeaaalllllll handy! If you got a dog that won't put a lot of pressure on a hog by trying to bite at it then he'll stop eventually.
