One of my dogs got a pretty good puncture on his chest. It didnt get through to the cavity but it turned up and came out the top of his chest.  The lower entry wound is where the tusk went in is about the size of a half dollar and where the top of the tusk came out is about the size of a dime. The two wounds are about 4 inches apart. I cleaned it out with betadine and water after it happened and started him on antibiotics. Now i cant keep him still enough to rinse with water everyday. Any tips on how to keep him down enough for me to clean it out daily or should i just keep him on antibiotics and let it heal on its own?  Also he wants to lick the wound a lot, is this ok?  Thanks

x-2  thats the best advice my vet gave me on cuts  [if they can reach it to lick it let em ] and one trick i use is to pull there head thru a cow panel and snub them up when i do a little maint. or bathing for that matter .

I was out of staple with a 5 inch gash across my bay dogs chest about a month ago and i hate to say it, but peroxcide to clean out really good and supper glue. Clean it out really well, and seal it up, and if the dog is able to lick it after it drys he will do the rest.

no on peroxide it will not let the tissue heal, let him lick it

If it is a poke, DO NOT CLOSE IT UP.   If you do there is a possibility that the outside will heal first leaving a pocket that can get infected and you have no way to get in and clean it up.   

A trick I use to help keep a dog still: you need a double lead (two snaps on one end) with another clip on the back of the lead.  Clip one snap to the dog, the other to a fence.  Get the dog to stand parrallel to the fence and run the lead from his neck down his outside shoulder and under his body.  You can pull the lead fairly tight and clip the back snap to the fence behind the dog.  It is kind of a make-shift squeeze shoot.  If that doesnt make sense let me know and I will shoot you a pic when I get home.

Make the sucker stand still and flush that baby out good with a garden hose every day, and penicilin of course

Another question for ya'll i put a couple staples on the bottom wound but left a good bit open to allow to drain, should i remove those two staples and just let it open up fully or will leaving the drain be ok?

leave it open, if you close it it will not get air to heal from the inside out, then you will have a bad infection on your hands

cut heal 2 or 3 times a day. antibiotics only if having an infection....probably will not infect when using cut heal

Yep, leave open and I pack big wounds with nitrofurazone after its washed out good

He's a pretty big dog and im by myself so its a little hard to make him stand still alone, trust me i tried my tail off.  I'm gonna try and tie him off to something tonight.



So like i said i put TWO staples in the top of the wound, leaving the bottom good and open, should i remove the two staples even though the majority of the wound is open?

Without being there to see it, I'd say leave the 2 staples as long as it's draining properly.
If it stops draining, you'll have to reopen it anyway and can take those out then.
I've never done much to one if he can lick it, that's natures best medicine.

Well last night i said to hell with it and i hog tied his legs together with some 24" zip ties and did what i had to do, he didnt like it for a while but got used to it. He had some dying skin(that stunk BAD!) around the outside of the wound that i trimmed away with scissors and washed the wound out with betadine and water real well. Then i got in their real good with qtips and some salve. Also sprayed cut heal in their real good.

1Trick I use to hold one down when they dont feel like cooperating  is to put their neck in my knee pit and sit on down with the other legstill standing. Like a one knee down position. Don't do it for long or squish them bit it works good to keep most of the body from moving.
