Title: never done this before Post by: adamp on January 06, 2012, 11:31:12 am I have had to cut down to 3dogs and. One is a Plott bmc cat that I started has some grit but not what I call rough. Will find em for me. Second is my yard/rough help dog5/8bmc 1/4cat 1/8dogo and 3is going to be a rcd will absolutely no bark. I have a cat that acts like a rcd until he gets hit enough then will bay. Think I need more in that third spot. At least half pit or maybe full dogo. My question is what combo would yall use? A strike and two rcd, two not so rough strike and a catch? My pigs run down here so please don't say 3baydogs and a gun...I.don't like track meets >:D

I woud want the strike dog to be short range, very loose baying even when the CD or RCDs catch, and not much bottom... If your strike dog is rough, i would put a vest on him to at the least... The last thing i would want is for my dogs to be caught a long ways off and it take a while to get to them... You catch a bad boar like that and you may not have to worry about having too many dogs... :-[ Title: Re: never done this before Post by: Purebreedcolt on January 06, 2012, 11:49:11 am You can go which ever way u want. It it was me go with above post or one loose one rough and one full catch and run vests on all three but the rough better catch with the full catch.
Title: Re: never done this before Post by: adamp on January 06, 2012, 11:53:19 am I have been researching bay vest and bibs, I am also getting the feeling I will be using more staple guns or seeing my vet more often, :-\ when one of these 3catch they all will....I am starting to like the idea of a loose strike

If I were in your situation I would run 3 dogs with a lot of bottom and little grit, but of course I'm not you and you may be interested in doing that. There is a big difference in "gritty" and "catchy" dogs though. Try some dogs that will lay teeth in a hog when it wants to run then back up and hammer once he stops. Just my 2 cents
Title: Re: never done this before Post by: t.wilbanks on January 06, 2012, 12:21:37 pm You also have to keep in mind that just because you have RCDs doesnt mean you wont have many races... ;)
Ive found with my RCD ( which I dont consider seasoned ) that pretty much the only time he is useful is with hogs that either wont stay bayed long or hogs that bay - break - bay - break etc... If you get on a runner the only thing thats going to catch him is good bottom... Ive seen some people post about getting on a "runner" that goes 1/2 a mile and bays up.. thats not the type im talking about... I mean one that runs for several hours and many miles... ;) Title: Re: never done this before Post by: halfbreed on January 06, 2012, 12:28:15 pm adamp you are wanting to hunt like i did when i first started out . and i was very succesful running 1 plott gyp for striking [loose baying ] backed up by two hard hitting catahoulas and a pup in training no vest just collars . like i said i did very well and i also kept the staple company in bizz . would have been alot better with a cd but i didn't think i needed one till i finally bought one and raised it from scratch . i had been whooped a few times but never lost a dog [ lucky ] good luck at it

Just my 2 cents You just described gypsy(rough help/yard dog to a t. She will tear up the back end of a runner and when its stops she's spitting in his face. hit ear when the cd gets there. The strike dog of the 3is the same just bays a little looser. I want the bottom like you are describing but hopefully won't have to test it too often.those two will catch out if it isn't over 150. You also have to keep in mind that just because you have RCDs doesnt mean you wont have many races... ;) I wish I could say you were Wong, that will be the only advantage I will get with an rcd. but one I like ;D....I don't like walking a cd through this south tx brush >:DIve found with my RCD ( which I dont consider seasoned ) that pretty much the only time he is useful is with hogs that either wont stay bayed long or hogs that bay - break - bay - break etc...
