Title: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: LTHogDogger on January 06, 2012, 12:55:13 pm Well iv been thinking lately wether i should get out or not.. I have 5 dogs and they are all good dogs and i really dont wanna get rid of them, but because of school and sports i dont have anytime to hunt. I have prolly hunted 3 times in the last 3-4 months.. Its costing alot of money just to keep 5 dogs around the house and feed them and all the stuff they need, to not even be able to take them out hunting.. Do yall think i should get rid of them?

Post by: Logan-99 on January 06, 2012, 12:59:44 pm Do what you think is best for you and the dogs hunting dogs are hunting dogs and they should be able to do what they were bred to do, if i was you i wouldnt neccesarily get all out but i would sell some and keep one or two around the house that you can take hunting with friends and other doggers

Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: HDMdogs on January 06, 2012, 01:32:46 pm i think you should quit and just send em to my place! ;D
i'd keep the best and cull the rest, sell em as well started dogs and make some of the money you've put out, but dont sell em you'd regret it eventually!! Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: LTHogDogger on January 06, 2012, 02:02:37 pm All the dogs are good.. The only one that has problems is my little catahoula gyp.. She has a back hip displacement, but she is hell on a hog once she gets to the bay!! Then there is 3 that are finished and one that is started but finds his own hog already

Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: LTHogDogger on January 06, 2012, 02:21:10 pm whats ur definition of finished? not starting a war just asking? I bought my first dog, which is that catahoula as a pup and started her.. Then i bought a Pit as a cd that was already finished, she would go to a bay and hit and catch HARD!! she has been doin the same thing since iv got her which was almost a year ago.. Then i bought a Well Started Bluetick at 1.5 almost 2.. And when i bought her as soon as u dropped the tailgate she would be GONE till she found a hog. She ranges out about 800-1000 yrds and has been doin the same thing for almost a year.. Then i got 3 other dogs that i bought and started all of them and then sold due to not hunting much.. Then i got a Pit/Cat that was Well Started when i bought him about 5 months ago.. I havent hunted him much so i leave him at Well started.. He goes about 250-400yrds and finds hogs and catches.. Then i got a a Pit/Cur about 4 months ago that was Well Started and i have hunted him more than my other dogs since i got him and he will find a hog if i let him but i use him as a cd cuz he is straight catch.. I call him finished as a cd, but he will find a hog Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: LTHogDogger on January 06, 2012, 02:22:55 pm U can ask Logan-99 above about my Bluetick, my Catahoula, and my Pit he will tell u also..

Post by: Logan-99 on January 06, 2012, 02:38:43 pm U can ask Logan-99 above about my Bluetick, my Catahoula, and my Pit he will tell u also.. oh yes, i have ran many miles behind the bluetick ;D , the catahoula is hell on a hog when she gets to the bay and gets better each hunt, and the pit is a very solid no fear catch and hold until you grow the balls to pull her off. just these three dogs right here have showed me a few good pounds of porkTitle: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? I think im gonna keep them and try to make more time to hunt and let friends and family borrow them if they want..
Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: tnhillbilly on January 06, 2012, 04:47:03 pm KEEP THEM!!!! I messed up and sold out couple years ago, didn't know what I had, til it was gone. Hard to replace good dogs. It wont hurt them to set a while, definitely not what we want, but it wont hurt them.
Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: ROCKIN ROO HOG DOGS on January 06, 2012, 05:52:48 pm If you have five hunting friends that you trust to take care of your dogs the way you would, then a good option is to place a dog with each of them, let them hunt them and you retain ownership. If they are catching hogs with them, the price of the food is a cheap trade off for using a good dog! There is always a risk of a dog getting hurt but its your final judgement on wether or not the people you trust will hunt them and take care of them just as good or better than you do. I am doing it for a friend of mine right now that does not want to see his dog waste away on a chain and so far the dog has been on 3 hunts with me and caught 4 hogs, the last hunt he took some bad hits,i immedieately called the owner to inform him what happened and the care that was to be given, its a risk we take every time we open the dog box,if this is not feasable for you you might consider cutting back and keep a couple that u really enjoy hunting with that dont need to be worked every week.....either way do whats best for your dogs.
Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: 3Whoghunter on January 06, 2012, 06:40:08 pm Well man I wouldn't get out. I got a friend that only has 2 dogs strike and his catch dog and he produce pork just fine. His strike dog will stop a runner and bay loose when pig is stopped. The ideal is to have alot of dogs but that's not always the case. Keep you a good strike/stop dog and a catch dog you'll do fine
Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: LTHogDogger on January 06, 2012, 07:58:19 pm Thanks 3W.. And thank you Rockin Roo.. But to be honest i only have 2 people around me that hunt that i would trust enough to keep my dogs..

Post by: YELLOWBLACKMASK on January 06, 2012, 11:36:45 pm Watched everybody sell out in the 90's with the downfall of the pen era. Cant say it was all that bad. For several years hunting was great cause nobody but a handful of folks stayed with it. Now we have the new realization of an old sport and everybody is goin out and getting dogs before they realize what's involved. My advice is if you are serious enough to stay with it you will find a way to balance it out and keep your dogs. If not sell them and get all the way out so you dont go to missing it and have regrets later.
Good luck either way bud. Title: Re: Should I get out of hog dogging? Post by: LTHogDogger on January 06, 2012, 11:38:55 pm Thanks
