Ok guys iv got a 5 year old redbone that's silent on a coon track so I got her to try on hogs see bays in a pen do yall think she could do good on hogs or just time will tell? An I have a young blue tic that trees squirels an stays busyer than any dog iv seen how hard would it be to get him to do that with hogs?

they just might make the best hog dogs you have ever owned...

I have always had good luck with coon dog yununs that were started on coons but would "trash" on hogs...seemed easy to change over and they did well.

put them on hogs or hunt them with a good hog dog and run an e collar on them,if they have the the smarts and want to they will figeur it out pretty quick.just a little juice wen they tree.

Put em on a couple mock hunts, see what they'll do looking at one. If they show potetial there then I'd let em run with my dogs. Sounds like you could come out of the woods with either a hog or a coon though. LOL! Good luck with that.  ;D

Don't even try it it'll be a waste of time just bring them to me and I'd be glad to take them off your hands  ;D :D..... Naw if they'll bay a hog and hunt hard then put them along side of a good dog and see Wat happens. X2 on the shock system tho a little juice at a tree mite help

I started out in the early 1980s with cow dog stock and then some airedales... Then I was reading up on the mtn cur dogs and tried a few...the first ones were too open and too small.

Then looked around and found some I liked...first time in the woods they hunted all morning and caught 1 hog. That evening they ran one in the thick briars where a person couldn't walk thru and we caught another. They ran another one for hours and had to leave them in the woods overnight because they wouldn't quit...these pups were about 10 months old at the time...Water and marsh or briars it didn't matter to them...started all my dogs off of that line of dogs...

these were out of a long line of coon and squirrel dogs...some were too open but all wanted a hog with very little training...the way I see it, if they like a squirrel they will love a hog...

nowadays, just like then, the mtn cur breed has so much deviation in how they are bred to look and hunt,  that it makes it a challenge to find the right line of dogs...

so just because it is a coon dog don't mean it won't make a hog dog...a hunting dog is a hunting dog...if he is a good coon dog then chances are it will make a hog dog...just might be too open or too gritty for what you want...or not have the bottom for a long race but I don't think bottom will be a problem...

I wouldn't break them off of coon until you are sure they will make hog dogs... turn them in to a good bay or turn them loose in the daytime in some fresh hog sign...but show them what a hog is first...

Yea I can't wait to see wat the blue tic will do! Do think the age on the redbone will matter any? On the transition part?

if he likes a hog he will be alright transitioning...

Gotta agree with reuben i had a redbone from coon stock and turned out to be one of my best strike dogs and he stayed silent as well.My walker on the other hand took a while to stop opening up on trail but was to gritty and it cost him in the end.

Done it plenty of times with good results. Age shouldn't matter. If its baying good in a pen, I'll bout bet you drop it in good hog sign and it will find and bay you a hog.

One of my best dogs was a coon dog the first couple years of her life but was real loose around the tree and when I would get to the tree shed take off huntin again and I didn't like that in a coon dog so I started her on hogs and she does really good for me. You shouldnt have any trouble with em. I never did run a e-collar either I just pull her off the tree and lead her off aways and cut her loose again. When I first changed her over she treed several but the more hogs she was on and the more trees I pulled her off of the less she trees. Good luck!!!

Thanks Harley yea that's the problem for me is finding hogs an finding places to hunt I go months with out finding one it suxs.

if u got hounds that are silent on coons then u dont want to waste ur time on hogs. pm me and i will hunt them. just joking it wil work dump them on area where hogs are around and walk ur ass off its tuff hunting but u will get on them u need to show them a hog in pen often.good luck. if their staight up silent and fast pm. me
