Heres the deal. I currently drive a 2003 ford f-150 supercrew FX-4. Looks like my transfer case is going out, so I will most likely be trading it in. I was considering a diesel but I will probably go with another half ton. I've been looking at dodge quad cabs 4x4. I'm trying to decide which engine I should go with if I go this route. The 4.7 or the 5.7 hemi. I've had a 4.7 in 2wd and the mileage was descent. Does anyone have the hemi 4x4? I'm hoping to get some feedback on the mileage and performance? Thank you

the hemi has the multi displacement system and it shuts down unneeded cylinders, I get around 20-21 on the highway when I am not hualing A$$ or pulling something, has plenty of power when needed. Every dodge I have seems to have some cooling system issue but its only minor.

Go with the hemi you'll be way more satisfied, 4.7 has weak cyl heads that warp when their worked hard. I worked for Chrysler for 8yrs, did tons of 4.7 head gaskets, only problem I ever seen over and over with 5.7 was cam shaft and lifter failure and almost all of those were police cars

If you go off road alot the new dodge front axles are their weakness, the cv joints are weak.

I'm leaning toward the 5.7. I know 2 people with that engine that have over 150,000 miles and no problems yet.one s 4x4 and one is 2wd. There is a significant difference in horsepower and I really dont think the 4.7 would quite have it for what I would be doing.

I have a 2009 with 5.7 that i have 89k on and so far just add gas and it goes. The truck runs really well for a 6" lift with 35's I out ran my buddys new 2011 ford diesel that is supposed to be bad to the bone. lol made him sick..... I get 16-17 on most tanks of fuel but i cant just put around in the eco mode. My eco mode will only stay engauged when i am rolling less than 60 mph scense i went with the bigger tires, with the stock tires i could run 70 mph with 4 cylinders (eco). I personally would not buy a high priced new diesel truck unless you tow real heavy loads alot. The only downfall i have found in my truck is the rear coil springs are weak when hauling. I fabbed up some 3/4 air bag helper deals on mine and run about 20 psi in them and it made a world of difference on handling a load. All in all i feel it is a great truck..

Ohh and a side note: the truck has some sort of a coorection system built in and knows when the truck is in a skid and WILL correct you if the truck is out of control. About a year ago i was driving in heavy rain when a bmw in front of me hit water and started hydroplaning sideways Car on each side of me i had no choice but to slam on my brakes too, my truck slid completely sideways going 70 or so, the light on the dash flashed and i swear the steering wheel and the brakes had a mind of thier own... the truck was headed the right way and in control in a matter of seconds and stopped about ten foot short of the bmw that had made about two 360's in front of me. The people at the dodge dealer had not told me about this function. later that day after changing underware i read about it on line. it is the same system that mercedes has been using for a few years... my daughter will be driving my truck or one like it when she gets her license. enough bragging for now... ;) i am not sure if it comes on all ram truck modles or not but it is on mine and i am glad.

Not to nock on dodges but I don't like the gas trucks to much a buddy of mine HAD a '08 an we replaced the front end twice. and I've never seen a dodge gas go over 175,000 miles on the original engine. If your gettin a half ton I'd get a Chevy a we had several at the last place I worked at that had over 300,000 and we pulled trailers with em everyday but again jmo

chevy is the best way to go if you wanna run gas, ive got one that has over 330K and still has origional internals only replaced the tranny and the fuel pump, dodge diesel is the only dodge id drive, other than a old 80's ram

I've had 2 dodge w/ 360's, a hemi, and 4.7. Hemi hands down, the fuel economy isn't that much worse and blows the power of the 4.7 out of the water. I had 80,000 on the hemi with lt headers, tuner, ported throttle body, and auburn lsd and it never missed a lick with hard driving.
