Title: Re: ring tail Post by: halfbreed on January 21, 2012, 01:48:56 pm here's one we got one night years ago . it's in the middle of the two coons . those things will flat make you think on culling a coon hound at night . my little gyp never lied on a tree but she got to treeing and nothing there couldn't figure out what was up with her . till it messed up one night . it had just killed a squirrel and was fighting a coon over it . my dog heard it and got there just in time to put the cat and coon up and we got em both . and of coures i took the squirrel home too . came out of the woods that night with the cat two coons and a squirrel . this was in red oak texas and all the years i've hunted that country never seen one . they weren't usually found that far north . got it's mate a few weeks later . they can move through the tree tops as good as a squirrel .(http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff413/halfbreed3/picofpic002.jpg)

Title: Re: ring tail Post by: hillcountry on February 03, 2012, 06:22:06 am the scientific name is Gingus ringus because they think they are gingascon. we used to get 9 dollars apiece for them there were thousands in the hillcountry. They got some kind of distemper but are makeing a come back. I had 2 jack russels and my buddy had 2 bordercollies that made us about a grand a week in the early 80's.
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: trapperchick87 on February 03, 2012, 08:58:16 am all I can say is WOW!!!! to bad the fur market has pretty much crashed..your lucky to get 5 bucks for a coon these days..the money is in the fox and bobcats.
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: RyanTBH on February 03, 2012, 09:32:54 am all I can say is WOW!!!! to bad the fur market has pretty much crashed..your lucky to get 5 bucks for a coon these days..the money is in the fox and bobcats. how much does a bobcat pelt go for?Title: Re: ring tail Post by: trapperchick87 on February 03, 2012, 10:03:36 am depends on the size an how distinckt the spots are..anywere from 75-125.00...the fur buyers are saying that the cats are going to be higher in late Feb to March...
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: hillcountry on February 03, 2012, 02:40:32 pm The market is better than yall think. My buddy bought a new truck last year he skips the middle man fleshes, dries and ships to the auctions. Selling green the middleman tripples his money.
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: trapperchick87 on February 03, 2012, 03:59:18 pm true but you still have to wait 4-6 months before you get your money, shipped last year and got my cats sold within the month, had to wait another 5 months for my fox to sell, they shipped them to the canada market to be sold...I flesh, strech and dry all my fur but when I go through all the troubble of fleshing and drying and the same pelt that is just green is sold for 2 dollars less then the dried pely you kinda wonder...the other thing to consider is location..north texas cats are in a higher demand then west texas cats(were im located) the difference is hugh! take 2 similar cats and the more northern cat will sell for 100.00 more then its southern cousin due to having better fur quality. there are pros and cons to shipping or selling green..im going to get off my soap box now...lol ;D
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: hillcountry on February 03, 2012, 08:03:48 pm I trap for the goverment so i cant sell any thing i cut the ears and tails off so no body can collect bounty on my catches. My buddy collects 100 on yotes and 50 on cats plus the fur money
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: halfbreed on February 15, 2012, 09:19:52 am where excatly are they paying a hundred dollar bounty on yotes ? i'll move there and get rich !!

Title: Re: ring tail Post by: firemedic on February 27, 2012, 08:08:01 pm Being from the East I've never seen a ringtail in person, only mounted ones. I always thought that they were the prettiest critter out there, sure wish we had 'em around Alabama,....I'd mount a few and sit them around. Don't let that one get away. You're a lucky lady to have caught it.
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: trapperchick87 on February 28, 2012, 08:51:35 am Thank you firemedic Im really proud of it! I should have it back in April along with my 35lb bobcat male..biggest cat I've ever cought..pretty good sized for this area! I'll post some pics as soon an I get em back!!!
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: firemedic on February 28, 2012, 01:02:27 pm That IS a big cat.....not many here in the SE ever get that size. Our cats here have little spotting on the back...lots on the belly, but it kinda plays out up the sides and on the back. I need to get a really nice ringtail and mount it. I did taxidermy as a second job for over 30 years.....a little ringtail would be pretty on the mantle.
Title: Re: ring tail Post by: trapperchick87 on February 28, 2012, 01:20:06 pm Im going to keep it here at work...just havent told the other lady i work with about it yet >:D the cat had ok spots..ive gotten better spots on a cat but im sure proud of him! biggest one ive ever gotten!!!

Title: Re: ring tail Post by: Hog Dog Mike on June 14, 2012, 01:08:18 pm I used to hunt deer in southwest Texas and there were quite a few ring tails in the area. One morning before daylight one of the guys was getting into his stand. This particular stand was fixed to where you came up through the floor.
Anyway, there was a ring tail in the stand and when he slid the cover over it ran down his back. He didn't mess in his britches but he wanted to. This guy always pounded on the floor of the stand a few times after that. Title: Re: ring tail Post by: trapperchick87 on June 14, 2012, 09:56:52 pm LMAO! that would sure scare me too!!!
