Title: Cow or hog
Post by: James Ket on February 22, 2012, 01:56:08 pm
Went to one of my places today to do some arrowhead hunting. Didn't find any. But found a really big track. It milled around where other hogs were at as well. It is comparable to a cow but I don't think a cow could get out there and to top it off it goes through a fence line that I don't see a cow being able to get through. Here is a pic of a track I found out there that is smaller. Then the other tracks. What are your thoughts.

That big track is a cow track, 800 lb yearling is my guess.

It was split. But I will admit I haven't messed around cows much.

Its a hog. I have/had video of a hog tossing dogs above a corn field one night with my hand in the track it made leaving. After whipping and cutting down every dog we had there. Have to see if I still have it.

I like your enthusiasm.   ;D   However, I believe you to be incorrect.   ;)
I am referencing this pic below.  His hand is on both sides of the plant (meaning it is at the ground level).  The lenth  (front to back) of that track is 5" based off of the average full grown man's hand dimensions where it is in relation to that track.  NOT a hog.  I had similar tracks down at the bottom of my property by a pond that was drying up.  I was thinking jackpot.  That is, until I really thought about it.   :D
I began to watch the field in the morning, and sure enough the yearling calves were stepping through my neighbor's fence close to the pond edge to partake in the fresh green shoot buffet.  Don't dog the COWS!!!!!!!!

I will add, if it stepped on it's front track to enlarge the original indintation, it is possible it is a hog.  If that is the case, Halfbreed, I apoligize.   ;D

There, did I cover all my angles?   ;D

James lets go get it one weekend. I gotta try to find the video and pics. The track the hog I hit years ago I could not cover with my hand open. You could see the edges of the track on both sides of my hand. This was before I had dogos LOL. It made two pits and an AB into baydogs cuz everytime they hit it tossed them into the air over the corn. Hince why I like legger catchdogs now. I think that he would hit them when they jumped for an ear and would both toss and cut at the same time. He put my whole pack out of commission for 3 weeks or so.

OH and if you made a fist you could put it in the track and not fill it. I have seen some hogs down in the salt marsh country while working cattle we thought were yearling angus calves until we got closer.

Would love to see the video shane if you find it.  We definitely need to get together and hunt sometime.  If it is a hog we are going to save this place for the TDHA hunt, if we dont get it, you will have to come up and run with us sometime.

There's cows on the place yes, but they aren't in the pasture he saw tracks in.  Plus this track goes up to a fence and same track is on neighbors on the trail thru fence. My thought is that its a good boar maybe 250-275 and his track looks bigger in tha mud than it really is.  Good hog no doubt tho

Halfbreed,

Read his first post again. The first pic is a normal sized "good" track. That is not the track in question.

Here is a pic of a track I found out there that is smaller. Then the other tracks. What are your thoughts.

I agree Mr Paul, looks to me like a yearling... as to this

there are some yearlings out there that think about as little of fences as a boar ;)

After a second look I would put money on it being a cow track.  A cow that ends up in a different pasture knows how to get through a fence, so I don't find it odd that it went through the fence.  The two peices of a cows hoof curve inward towards each otehr and a hogs do not.  You can clearly see this difference between the first picture of a normal hog track and the other Big track.

Lol u guys are funny. I'm not worried. We will run the place and see what happens. There are plenty of good size for sure pigs out there. If it turns out to be a pig we will know and if it's a cow prolly will never know cause hes probably been put back where he belongs. I'll have to talk to the rancher and see if he had any cows get out. Thanks to all for the input. It's fun to see everyone's thoughts and opinions.
