Title: german shepard Post by: oklahoma hogger on March 31, 2009, 07:26:43 pm i have a buddy that went and got a german shepard pup and was wanting to use it for hog hunting would this breed work?
Title: Re: german shepard Post by: keyserdawg on March 31, 2009, 08:09:49 pm I wouldnt bank on it. But im sure someone will say one worked somewhere. But why not get a breed that was bred specifically for hog hunting or hunting in general? I wouldnt get a blackmouth cur as a bird dog when there are soo many breeds bred for the job but im sure there is one out there that can do it or does. It is spelled shepherd, no big deal im a bad speller myself.

Title: Re: german shepard Post by: kincheloe on April 03, 2009, 04:06:43 pm I have seen several different breeds of dogs bay hogs. I have been to contest that have had a miniture poodle and a boston terrier. I have a friend that had a german shephard that would bay a hog. In my eyes you can teach any dog to do anything. I have even seen pitbulls bay and never touch the hog, when most would tell you that it is breed into them to catch or kill.

Title: Re: german shepard Post by: aussiedogger on April 04, 2009, 03:04:53 am any dog will bay a hog. provided they have the fitness but you gotta have that scentin ability. and german shepherds are long haired.... not good in heat.
Title: Re: german shepard Post by: Cutter Bay Kennels on April 04, 2009, 08:11:51 am Ask Noah. He'll be back in town this weekend. He's got a shepard mix that can do it.

Not sure about that, Luke is as furry as they come and will outlast all my other dogs in the heat. Again, maybe he is just a freak of nature ;D Title: Re: german shepard Post by: Wmwendler on April 04, 2009, 09:41:00 pm Any dog can bark at a hog if it wants to and any dog can bite a hog and make it fight back sometimes or bite a hog and make it run other times >:(. OOPS not what you want but it happens allot if you dont have the right kind of dog. Any dog can keep a hog from running away when its in a bay pen because it has no where to go in the first place. Some might call that baying, but I don't. Baying hogs is something all together different in my opinion and requires finess and technique that has been bred into some breeds of dogs for generations. Why not go for those kinds of dogs when they are out there. It cost the same to feed a maybe dog as it does to feed a sure enough good dog. I agree with the others go for something that was bred for the job.

Title: Re: german shepard Post by: shawn on April 07, 2009, 08:20:01 am I wouldn't worry about it being furry, just stay close to creeks, lol
I've never hunted with or seen a shepard hog hunt, but why not? If a dog can't stand hogs and wants to find them I don't care what breed it is.... ;D If it doesn't work, maybe they'll remake rin tin tin or K9 cop? Title: Re: german shepard Post by: NThoghunter on April 08, 2009, 05:21:07 pm Ole Luke has struck many a hog for me. He flat hates em.
