Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on what age a dog is finished? I Know it differs with dogs but i have been seeing alot of people saying 10 month old and yr old dogs finished just wondering what others think.

Whatever age the dog shows full potential and is without question when dropped to hunt.

Dogs peak at about 5yrs old, I won't call a dog finished until they're at least 2½yrs old anything younger I may call it well started.

That my opinon as well 3 yr plus or so before they learn all the tricks of the trade and have the maturity to be called finished. Just hunting doesnt mean finished. Finished means every aspect of hunting  not just finding them

Yep and I think a finished dog will continue to improve as well.  I compare hunting dogs to athletes.  To me a started dog elevating to a finished dog is like amateur turning pro.  Once they turn pro they still improve in their abilities and talents ( or they're supposed to  ;D )

No such thing as a 10 mnth finished dog, unless he is through!!

 i agree ... but hell there is a 10 month only finished blue tick in the dog trade for 1200 if anyone is interested  rolleyes ;D

Sure would like to hunt behind one of these 10 month or 1y old finished dogs. And see what they consider finished.

Funny that 10 month old finished dog is why i asked wanted to see if others thought that was crazy to. Ive seen alot of that lately

 

i can understand if it was 12 BUCKS but 1200 is just flat out insane ... you know how much  beer i coulld buy with 1200 bucks lol

I know thats right. 1200 better be able to drop that dog in downtown houston and find a hog if its 10 months old for me to pay that

I got some four month old finished dogs. Being finished this early with so many hunting years left They have to be $5,000 each rolleyes

I am of the belief that they are finished when they are in the ground.

10-4 an to be honest i'd go buy a bunch of yella puppies for 100 bucks a pop raise them aint no way i'd ever pay cash like that for a dog ... i've spent a total of 150 bucks on dogs my whole life ... when i was a boy about 10 11 years old i went to the john deere store over here right outside of cleveland wellll this old lady had " REDBONES" for sale lol keep in mind im just a lil boy who mowed a bunch of yards to get 50 bucks ... i was gunna be a coonhuntin fool ... i brought that dog home an my buddies dad is a hardcore coonhunter he seen that dog an laughed at me an told me that wasn't no redbone an sure nuff 6 months went by an them ears got shorter lol it was like a sharpay mix or something lol ... an i spent 100 bucks on a full blooded yella dog when i was like 18 or 19 she was 5 weeks old an i said if she didn't hunt it was my fault ... an shes still here catchin hogs for me lol

lol well you could just take them to a pen with about 20 head of hogs in it show the dog an then post it on the dog trade ... " Gotta 10 month old bluetick here looked at 20 head of hogs behind it in one day " would you be lying lol ?

I bought one dog out of a old mans yard 5 years ago and finally got a dog to breed him to raise my own. I have been trying to buy a finish gyp for 6 months no one is willing to show the dog hunt they just want you to give them your money and leave Trial aint worth 2 cents

My Grandpa would just ask if it was the truth.

Like i had one guy no names mentioned set to sell me a silent plott gyp for $800. Set the hunt up got in his town said his kid got sick he couldnt go and said oh ill just take $400 for her and you take her lol. I said no thanks ill eat the 30 in gas!!! He then acted like a child and txt me for 3 days talking about how i wasnt trustworthy etc.

 I think that there are a lot of 10 month old pups that have lots of drive, hunt and bottom who do produce hogs. But they are still pups and have a lot to learn about everything.

 To me its sort of like having a teenager works hard and has tallent. They still have a lot to learn....about everything. Some things can only be learned with miles and experience.

 So there may be some good 10 month old dogs out there but I wouldn't call them finished.

It takes years to finish out a dog and most are still learning the day they die.  A good dog finding hogs and doing what he is suppose to be doing I imagine around 4 is a good avarage number when they are really coming into their on.

HELL YA LOL or tell them you wanna see it hunt .... an then see what kindsa FIB they come up with next
