Title: New Project, Need constructive critisitizm
Post by: charles on March 22, 2012, 11:34:52 am
im building an atv/dog trailer. it is 5' wide by 12' long. i was thinking of making the dog box detachable so i can put it in the bed of my tck, but i would only have access to 2 doors then unless i put a swing door in between the 2 side. im alomost to far along to try it, but its doable. the ? is, should i make afix the box to the trailer or make it removable incase i want to load my 4wheeler and a hog wagon once i get it built? some places i hunt requires a boat and the wheeler in the bed of my tck makes it a tight fit for my dogs, thats why im building a trailer to haul it all. if i build a hog wagon, i can pull it behing the trailer, but if i have to take my boat, that rules out my wagon unless i load it on the trailer, thats why im thinking bout making the box removable. any idea?

here is a start to current progress of what i got so far. please feel free to judge and constructivle critisize my work.

that is similar to what we are just getting started on Charles. Is the box going to be a 4 hole box? doors on both sides? Looks good so far. We are going to make our double decker... that way you can have dogs and a hog pen on the bottom row of the trailer, and we are going to make a rack for the atvs up above the dog and hog compartments. Just an idea... but then you could have all hogs, dogs, and atvs on the trailer... and use the back of your truck for storage or another dog box.

i was thinkn of doing the same thing, but my boxes are only 2' tall and yes on 4 holes. i was thinkn of double stackin. my main thing is should i make the box removable incase i need to hook my boat on the back the this trailer, put the atv and hog wagon on the trailer and dogs in bed of tck?

I would say no. You could always put a hitch on the back side of that trailer and haul both behind the truck... ;-)

I dont know how big of a hog wagon you are lookin at building, but with mine hooked up to the wheeler almost fills up my 16ft trailer.. I bought my trailer just for hauling my wheeler and wagon without having to unhook every time to get it on or off..

If you have to haul it to where the wagon is on the trailer and wheeler in the truck, just leave the hogs in the wagon and use the boxes for the dogs on the ride home... JMO  ;)

Like it real close to what I just built.  I went with a removable second box though.  Bad thing is time I add the second dog box and if I build my hog box the trailer is about out of room.  it is also handy to have a box to carry junk in.  Something else I ran into was how fast weight added up on the front.  My plan was for me to be able to pick up the front end but that did not happen.  Basically I'm in the same boat as you and about to decide not to build a hog box because of space.  You might be able to do is make a long box but just wide enough for a good hog to fit in on one side and then have your wheeler on the side.  Just throwing out ideas.

purebreed, the trailer is just wide enuf for my wheeler, i have a little wiggle room but not much. i think trent is right as far as put the wheeler in the bed, the wagon on the trailer and if hook my boat up afterwards. purebreed, i too was gonna add a top box, but weight got to it. i even moved my axle up 4" to help balance it out but now that the single box is on the front, it has about 100lbs of tounge weight or a little more. money is limited, but time aint for right now since im unemployed, so i will build another 1 that will allow for a hog box on 1 side and the wheeler nxt to it at a later date and sell this 1. thank yaw for your ideas, i greatly appreciate them.

loading my wheeler int he bed of the tck is an a$$ clincher. the dogbox on the trailer is about the same highth as my tailgate. the hog box whould have to be nearly a foot taller. them dog boxes are 2' tall. i wouldnt rry n stuff a big pig in a 2' tall hole. i didnt like it during SEAR school, so i would have to build it 3-4' tall.

Let's see better pics of the ramps. I gotta build some on mine. Immature make a slide in hog box to load and unload behind my wheeler. Just have to load and unload everytime.

how much better pic of the ramps are you looking for? the ramps are 4ft long, 10.5" wide. they are hinged, but can be removed, similar to a tailgate on a tck.

i used cold roll round stock, welded it to the trailer frame, took a piece of pipe, cut a section out to allow the ramps to lift off and pin in place on the side of the trailer. if i didnt have an extended atv rack, they would fold up. i could back the wheeler on the trailer and be able to fold the ramps up and pin them there too. i wanted to make it user friendly for quick changes and usage

Maybe just get some ramps that you can pull on and off, and just put them on the side of the trailer and park your wheeler on top of the dog box. And put the wagon where the Wheeler is.

hey dub, loaded the wheeler today sideways, will post pics tomorrow. it fits, but the front n rear tires hang off half way on both sides. its kind of a pucker effect loading it.

if you made a hog box , you just need longer ramps to make it not so steep to load wheeler on top

I have set of 7.5' ramps that i use to load my wheeler in my tck and the top of the dog box is as high as my tailgate and loading and unloading from the tck is an a$$ clincher. it would take a 8'+ set of ramps to take the steepness out. they dont offer ramps that long, or none that i have found.
