Found 70 in about 2 hours, going back out this afternoon to another secret spot and just wondered if any one else hunt's them. Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: waylon-N.E. OK on March 24, 2012, 10:39:04 am (http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/xx274/waylonstokes/043.jpg)

OK on March 24, 2012, 12:37:37 pm My favorite way is to buy onion ring batter from the store and bred them in that and deep fry them, but I've cooked'em like you would a stake on the grill and in a skillet as well. to me though onion ring batter is by far the best way
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: SwampHunter on March 24, 2012, 12:48:58 pm Oh ya , the fried sounds like it be good
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: mod93dirt on March 24, 2012, 01:36:07 pm I like them fried, battered up in zatarains fish fry. The cornmeal gives a little texture to them, and the spices give it a little kick.
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: tnhillbilly on March 24, 2012, 02:05:54 pm Ive been burning the woods up for the last three weeks, with not much luck, only finding one each time out. They should be coming up good just anytime here, but everyone ive talked to ain't finding any. I ain't been all week, been working 12 hr shifts.
Should be a good year for them with all the rain. http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu277/tnhillbilly/Mobile%20Uploads/0903101943a.jpg I like them just rolled in flower and fried in butter, but might have to try some of ya'lls recipes Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: tnhillbilly on March 24, 2012, 02:17:13 pm Whoops

OK on March 24, 2012, 05:37:30 pm i have the best luck under a big Sycamore tree, on a high shaded spot where an old elm grows, under ceder tree thickets and if over grown bottom place burned off good last year and the found is still dark from it then they seem to like that as well. I'm sure there in other places but that's been my best places
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: tnhillbilly on March 24, 2012, 07:25:05 pm The ones ive found so far have been up pretty high. I read where a guy in my county found several about a week ago in a cedar thicket, ive got one in my back yard gonna have to check it out.

Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: tnhillbilly on March 24, 2012, 11:20:40 pm And i thought I was scared of spiders. LOL I would have NEVER seen that. "Hawkeye"
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: djhogdogger on March 24, 2012, 11:22:06 pm Lol, I shiver every time I look at that pic. Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: firemedic on March 25, 2012, 09:06:38 am Lol, I shiver every time I look at that pic. You crack me up Dinah.....this, from a woman that will leg as mean a boar hog as any man... :o.....'viva la differance'.....aaahhhh my French ain't that good today. :P Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: djhogdogger on March 25, 2012, 11:55:15 am Lol, I shiver every time I look at that pic. You crack me up Dinah.....this, from a woman that will leg as mean a boar hog as any man... :o.....'viva la differance'.....aaahhhh my French ain't that good today. :P LOL, this is true. Snakes don't bother me either. But I will tear the woods down if a spider gets on me. Its pretty funny because in the warm months, big ol bananna spiders just cover the woods that we hunt in. You will never see me take the lead while going through the woods in the summer. Some guys think its funny to catch one and throw it on me to watch me have a chinese come apart ..... but they dont laugh when I pick up a snake and throw it on them. Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: firemedic on March 25, 2012, 06:59:24 pm Lol, I shiver every time I look at that pic. He was fighting this guy, slugging, kicking, motioning with his hands and screaming "comon and get some of this @#$%". The only problem was there was nobody there. He was seeing things like the guy in the movie "A Beautiful Mind".
I called the law on him before he hjurt someone and they cuffed and stuffed him. Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: tnhillbilly on March 25, 2012, 11:36:07 pm Wrong kind of mushrooms.
Checked the ceded thicket behind the house, no luck. Headed up on the mtn in the morning. Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: RockinW on March 25, 2012, 11:47:54 pm i love em, but my spots havent been very productive the last few years. maybe i need to foller Waylon around! i dip em in egg/milk then roll em in 1/2 cornmeal- 1/2 flour with a little salt & pepper & fry in oil or butter!
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: tnhillbilly on March 25, 2012, 11:53:00 pm Do you pull the whole thing up or cut them off?
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: RockinW on March 26, 2012, 12:13:12 am i've always been told to cut or pinch em off above the ground & carry em in a mesh sack like taters come in & they'll be more likely to keep growin, but it dont seem to be workin here. i find less every year. ???
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: tnhillbilly on March 26, 2012, 12:22:59 am Good advise, thats the way I do it.

I live an hour east of Dallas in Hunt County.
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: waylon-N.E. OK on March 30, 2012, 06:04:29 pm I believe they grow all over, just start by looking in a bottom lying area where there is a lot of undergrowth and dying plant matter. Good luck, you will enjoy'em.
Title: Re: Morel mushrooms Post by: tnhillbilly on March 31, 2012, 09:08:41 pm Just Google morels, there are some very informative sites about where and when to find them.
wife picked up some zatarans today. It was good, but I still like plain ole rolled in flour and fried in butter, with a dash of salt. Im going to try them on the grill one of these days, just havnt had time. |
