Title: Hunting styles Post by: djhogdogger on March 24, 2012, 06:57:30 pm I wonder how many on this site: A. Walk hunt B. Use 4 wheelers and atv's C. Hunt our of their trucks with hood dogs D. Hunt off of horse or mule E. Anything else that I missed.....is there anything else? We use a ranger and 4 wheelers. Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: BigNoseKate on March 24, 2012, 07:03:06 pm We road the dogs out of the trucks... and walk hunt em' if its too wet or if we wanna hunt somewhere we can't drive!
I'm anxious to see the replies to this post because I'm curious to see how people hunt where we are moving (Brazoria county)!! Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Jabo on March 24, 2012, 07:04:24 pm We hood hunt from the truck. Every now and then we might walk a spot but very rarely.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: East tx hog hunter on March 24, 2012, 07:13:09 pm We mainly walk hunt, but sometimes hunt off the 4 wheeler
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Plainhorseman on March 24, 2012, 07:14:34 pm We use atv, horseback and walk hunt.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Peachcreek on March 24, 2012, 07:16:44 pm Ranger and fourwheelers mostly for me. Sometimes a walk hunt depending on how big a place it is.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: tnhillbilly on March 24, 2012, 07:20:34 pm For bear, we walk the dogs "on lead" til we find a track or dogs strike, then we still have to find the track to make sure we turn loose the right direction.
For hogs, all of the above, except hood, havnt tried that yet. Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Cutter Bay Kennels on March 24, 2012, 07:21:32 pm Hunt all styles, but free cast most of the time.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: skunkhounds on March 24, 2012, 07:30:42 pm i hunt hood dogs mostly but hunt of 4 wheeler some
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: djhogdogger on March 24, 2012, 07:31:46 pm Seems like where you hunt makes a huge difference on how you hunt.
I would love to hunt on our horses but there are too many fences and hazards where we hunt. A lot of where we go is on some old logging trails where a truck wouldn't make it through, and as far as walking.... now Im not lazy or anything but there is no way in heck that I would want to try and keep up with the dogs when they are on a runner. There have been times when it took most of the night to get the dogs back using the four wheelers. Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Lance on March 24, 2012, 08:03:34 pm Four Wheelers or Horses.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Bigdog on March 24, 2012, 08:19:31 pm horses. only way to go.rino now n then.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: rdjustham on March 24, 2012, 09:44:11 pm Walk Hunt, Wind off the box out of the back.. Occasionally we get a "roof" wind dog.. only seems to happen if we arent usin the woods truck though.. lol
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Purebreedcolt on March 24, 2012, 10:02:46 pm All the above but horses. If I'm walking it better because I'm hunting a big wooded area and not much wind or lots of wind one. Try not to have to when it is wet but it happens.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: DoGgONit on March 24, 2012, 10:12:40 pm we just pull the truck in and the hogs load up !!! he!!we dont even take the dogs anymore!!!!!
cast dogs from 4wheeler and drive as close as we can! occasionally walk hunt but depends on property and weather!! Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: hogaholicswife on March 24, 2012, 10:21:33 pm Our old dogs wind from the truck, the young dogs will run out in front until they wind something or hit a track but we are working on them learning to ride and wind....we cover much more ground without wearing them completely out.
My husband can put them in a head or accross a ditch for them to hunt and we also sight hunt them sometimes. Our dogs go too far and tend to be too rough (especially if they have another dog out) to walk hunt them. We do use the Ranger on some places but 99.9% of our hunting is from a truck. Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: rdjustham on March 24, 2012, 10:23:06 pm Nice part about huntin out of the truck, is the ability to be closer to the cooler!! ;D
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: djhogdogger on March 24, 2012, 10:25:31 pm Nice part about huntin out of the truck, is the ability to be closer to the cooler!! ;D LOL, true. This might be a disadvantage to walking or horseback. Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: RyanTBH on March 24, 2012, 10:44:33 pm Walk hard

Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: rdjustham on March 24, 2012, 11:16:30 pm Nice part about huntin out of the truck, is the ability to be closer to the cooler!! ;D LOL, true. This might be a disadvantage to walking or horseback. Very true, but there arent many walk/horse friendly huntin places around me.. Normally its crashin through THICK palmetto heads.. We do walk hunt alot though.. Thats when little brothers come in handy... They wanna hunt they have to work (cooler runs) ;D Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Yelladogwreckincrew on March 25, 2012, 01:04:25 am All Of the above
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: firemedic on March 25, 2012, 09:11:32 am We walk hunt most of the time, we rig the dogs out of the Ranger some and the standers use atvs also, but mostly walk. A horse wouldn't be of much use to me....waaaay too thick where we hunt to ride a horse.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: texasgrit on March 25, 2012, 09:34:16 am any way i can. just as long as i can go. ;D

Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: SwampHunter on March 25, 2012, 10:40:19 pm we walk , use 4 wheelers an hood hunt some depends where we go
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: dblackwell on March 26, 2012, 08:08:39 am Horseback 99% of the time. We use pretty gritty curs no and no bulldog. Its a little tough dragging tied hogs long distances and they chew up ropes draging from the top jaw, but you'd be surprised how much farther you can ride threw the woods horseback than on a weeler. Plus no running you ride rite up to the bay, step off your horse, and on the hog.
Title: Re: Hunting styles Post by: Kid7 on March 26, 2012, 10:29:34 am Road the dogs out of the truck sometimes, walk most of the time, free cast ALOT, and hunt off horseback sometimes
