Title: i dont know what to do next Post by: shuttin em down on April 28, 2012, 12:20:39 pm I have a gyp that will strike a hog but won't stick with a runner very long she will only run about 800-900 yards then come back to us. How can I get her to stick with one I know she wants to find the pig cause when she sees one in a pen shell jump the fence and start baying.

Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: Purebreedcolt on April 28, 2012, 12:38:52 pm I have one the same way. He strikes most of our hogs but won't stick. He is hog crazy. Get a dog paired with her he will usually stick if there is a dog that will hang with him that he likes.
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: shuttin em down on April 28, 2012, 02:49:20 pm I have another gyp that will stick with one but they won't run together thats the only two that will strike a hog but were training some pups
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: OCD on April 28, 2012, 10:03:17 pm just keep it in the woods and take it to the bays let it be there for the finish and it will start sticking with one
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: shuttin em down on April 28, 2012, 11:26:52 pm Shell find the hogs that will stop at about 600 yards
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: shuttin em down on April 29, 2012, 12:12:29 am Yes and when you hobble it and then shell go out and hunt again she ran 7 hogs in one night but she wouldn't run over 800-900 yards off then shell run back to us then hunt again
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: cantexduck on April 29, 2012, 10:16:36 am How do you know she is running hogs ? She might be trashing or just taking a track and not being able to work it out.
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: shuttin em down on April 29, 2012, 10:49:23 am She won't bark on track unless its a pig we been trying to trash break her but shell still follow the scent but won't bark on track the other dogs will bark but she wont
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: aussie black mouth curs on April 29, 2012, 05:19:54 pm Hold her back and don't let her hunt until theres a hog bayed up, then let her go. She'll get the idea she's missing out...

Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: curdawgs on April 30, 2012, 07:47:41 pm I got a cur gyp does the same thing. Heck of a strike dog but no bottom. I hooked her up w a dog tht will stick w one and she stayed with one 6 hours the other day step for step. Some of the bloodlines are just short range. Use to if she stuck w one for and hour ten I was surprised. Also she wouldn't just hook up with any dog cause she is real independent just so happen la that she likes and trusts this hound for some reason. II asked a old timer buddy of mine the same question he said used to disnt have to have long ranged bottomy dogs, said the hogs would just bay up almost like they were lookn for the dogs too. So those old type bloodlines like that where they hunted those type of Hogs just don't got range and bottom in there blood.

Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: Caseydejohn on April 30, 2012, 09:15:52 pm How old is she?
Sound to me like she is a cull unless she is a young dog. I think putting her in a bay pen is the worst thing you could do. Bay pens ruin dogs IMO. The hog is always close and they never really have to work to see and bay the hog. Jmo If shes young keep her in the woods and hope for the best, if not cut your loses and move on. Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: shuttin em down on April 30, 2012, 09:28:26 pm A little over 2 and what is culling? And she didn't start out in a bay pen she was started in the woods not hunting in the woods but we would turn one loose and wait about 10 minutes and do a mock hunt thats how she learned
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: Caseydejohn on April 30, 2012, 10:01:22 pm I'd just keep her in the woods and hunt the piss out of her. Id try to find someone with a good finished dog and run her with it.
Cull mean do away with. Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: firemedic on May 01, 2012, 09:09:51 am Sounds like a really good dog for somebody that hunts smaller places,.....not everybody wants a dog that will run a hog for 9 miles out of the country....me included.
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: Kid7 on May 01, 2012, 09:27:58 am I want mine to stick with one for about 8-900 yds.
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: shuttin em down on May 01, 2012, 10:43:38 am All we hunt on is 730 acres and I trained her myself and I rather her stay close than to far she ran so far that we couldn't hear her bark the other night
Title: Re: i dont know what to do next Post by: shuttin em down on May 15, 2012, 09:45:02 am my buddy got a new finished strike dog cur/cat cross and a finished full blood bmc and now the black and tan gyp will stop her own hog quick and she has learned some new tricks at that and she is starting to range out and every since she stopped her first runner she ranges out at about 150-200 yards average
