Title: Strangest thing you have run across while hunting
Post by: Circle C on April 16, 2009, 01:42:30 pm
Going hunting in the sure enough ghetto in a couple hours, and we were joking about what we might run across out there got me to thinking.

What is the strangest thing you have run across while hunting?

Near my place in Centerville, I still don't know what it is I ran across, but it looks like an old cast 4" pipe sticking up about 3-4' out of the ground  in the woods. The pipe is about 300 yards from the original homestead that was built well over 100 years ago. The soil in the area is sugar sand, and I am not aware of any cellars, but maybe it has to do with a still?  I will try to remember to get a picture of it

So, what's the strangest thing you have run across while hunting?

I was caribou hunting in alaska nearly twelve miles from a road and riding a four wheeler down a creek bed and I found an old bulldozer and an old pickup.  It doesn't sound that strange i guess, until you see the trails we had to ride to get there, almost bad enough to wreck a four wheeler a few times over.  there were no other roads, no trails, no nothing to where this stuff was sitting.  Like it fell out of the sky.  a couple days later into the hunt we found a meth lab.

I found an old metal structure that was consumed by a cedar tree at my old deer lease in west Texas.  This tract of land is V E R Y remote and where I was at when I found it was a very hard to get to get to spot on a ridge.  It was some type of still of something with a large cone shaped section about 4-5' tall with a little door like a stove.  The hinge for the door was really unique and appeared to be made out of cast iron and one-off.  It was made large on one end and small on the other to accomodate the taper in the cone peice.  I took the hinge home with me and made a buffed it and treated with mineral oil and used it as a picture frame, turned out pretty cool.
When I was younger we were hunting on an old family deer lease around Elwood on the Trinity River and I was way down in the bottom just squirrel hunting and found an old horse shoe.  I have no real way of knowing how old it was but it looked really old and no one had ridden a horse with permission on that property in 75+ years.  At the time I thought it was the coolest thing.

The strangest thing I have found while hog hunting is hogs.  If you have hunted with my dogs you'd understand how unique that find actually is.  ;)

The same group of buddies and I hunt rams out in west tx every year.  There are a bunch of caves in and around the dry creek beds that run thru the ranch and I've checked out most of them.  I belly crawled into one and noticed it immediately opened up and had a nice dome shaped top that had obviously been chisled out with a crude instrument.  I look over to the right there are a bunch of ancient drawings of animals and people on the wall of the cave.  Pretty cool!  I assume this picture is of a mule deer because that's most adundant horned animal out there.  I held a shotgun shell up to it so that you could reference the size.

That thing is kinda scary!!  Made really well though, looks just like a real person's face, not chizled at all.

Cull, that is really neat.  I love to check out caves and things of that nature.  On the same place in west texas we check all of them out and found snakes mostly!!  There was a large native american population at one time though and most of the artifacts had been removed by the land owner except for the hard to get to places  ;D  Me, Chris Windham, WestTexasCurs and his buddy climbed up and found a dozen good arrow head in about 30 minutes on a huge bluff.  I have the pics at home, I will post them later.

Cull Buck,

If you don't mind me asking, where was the place you hunted?

We had a mule deer lease for a few years north east of Alpine in the Glass mountains, and there are some cool caves on the place much like you describe.  There was even a burned out midden on the place that has been studied by archeologists for quite some time.  It was a very interesting place, and we found some cool stuff there (In addition to some monster mule deer, elk, and aoudad.)

Here's an article about it.  The ranch we had was the Mills Ranch.

About 4 years ago wile hog hunting we had one of the finest looking blonds I have ever seen ride out of the woods on a sorrel horse bareback!!!  Tank top, daisy dukes, and bare footed! I ain't even kidding!  Quite a vision I assure you fellas!!!
She was friendly as a person could be and rode with us for about a 1/2 mile just yakking a way like she had known us forever.
Im glad I had a friend with me or I would have written her off as an hallucination!

You just dont see that way back in the woods every day hog hunting!

dang i want to go with ninja was not actually hunting but scouting a place and found a big hole in the ground.  was way back in the brush off of a creek bed and no road around but the thing had to be 5 feet deep and 8 ot 10 feed across and just almost perfectly round.  No way any motor anything has been in there for at least 50 years probally longer because of the pecans trees around it

The cave paintings are about the coolest thing I've seen man. Did anybody ever find out what that thing the guys grandpaw found in the creek was? Don't know about strange but I've come across a couple of old meth labs where they left all their trash in the woods. Probably should have reported it but never did.

I have found a cave with drawings, rock bowls, etc.Lots of arrow heads, and stuff like that.In 1995 we caught a hog with two noses, kinda strange.Jumped a yearling lion up from a plumb thicket in 1994,there aint many of those up here. The strangest thing I have heard someone run across while hunting. My buddys Granddad was hunting a big ranch up here that is super rough. The dogs went off in a canyon and jumped something.A running fight took off down the canyon floor. The hunters were horseback up on the rim, they heard the dogs go to baying. It was very strange to them, there dogs didnt bay, they caught. But sure enough they were set back baying something. They rode around and found away down.Rode up ready to rope a whopper hog.Not a hog........Hyena.Like them ugly critters in Africa, yep Hyena! I think that is how you spell it.I cant remember what he said they did with it.But I remember him saying it was probably something somebody turned loose. This was in the early 60's late 50's.Kinda strange.

I was not there but Dad bayed a 200lb pot bellied boar once a long time ago.  When I was a kid I was with my dad feeding hay near Milano, Tx and saw a Cougar with two cubs.   My brother and I saw another cougar in 2001 when we were 4-wheelin' in his Toyota near belton Texas on Ft. Hood land.

Back a few years ago I was hog hunting with some freinds and we had a group bayed and sent the catch dog and ended up catching two out of the group then.  After the catch dog hit the group busted and two hogs with no dogs on them came by and I was'nt gonna shoot but my freinds said "SHOOT!", so I did but missed or so I thought.  We got the two hogs loaded and kept on hunting and later on the dogs struck again but this was a few hours later and well over a mile away from where we caught the others.  Well, we ended up catching two hogs there also, but one of them had a big streak of hide missing in its back.  And for the life of me I could not figgure it out.  It was fresh but not from a dog then I realized it was the hog I shot at and only grazed it.  The angle was right and same size and color as the one I shot at.  I am almost certain the other hog we caught in that spot was the other hog that ran by...same size and color.  Had that not happened we would have though they were just some other hogs and not from the group we bayed earlier that day.  You would think that hogs would leave the country after having your mates caught and you almost shot but these only went a little less than a mile and a half.

yea you would think. when i went down to texas to hunt with daisy dog we caught a big sow cut the ear off and hobbled her. left her to get later on to do some more hunting. scott went back to get her later that day and she was gone. that next weekend they were hunting the tourny and caught her again and she still had one hobble on. she was one of the hogs they weighed in. around here these hog run for the next county and don't come back for awhile.

Bryant,

The ranch we hunt is about 90 miles west of Del Rio on Hwy 90.  The nearest town is Langtry which is about 30 miles to the east.  The southern boarder to this 10,000 acre ranch is the rio grande river.

About 100 yards from this cave we found a midden site.  We have found several of those plus lots of arrow heads on this ranch.  Not to mention 6 feral mexicans.

Well, the first and foremost strangest danged thing would have to be what I saw last November, while deer hunting near Gatesville. Right around sunset, I saw two does and a coyote come up to the feeder. Together. As a group. Then, after sticking around for a few seconds, they all left peacefully as a group, headed in the same direction, one after the other. :o

The other was the time I saw a water moccasin swallowing a 2-3lb catfish head first in a pond.

But the scariest thing was something I posted a while back under "scary hunting stories" or something like that. I won't repost, but man, it was pretty creepy and I still don't know what the heck that critter was.

The crazyest thing I ever seen me and my brotherinlaw was tree'd one night right on the edge of east caddo creek and had jumped the coon out and it landed in the creek all the dog's jumped in tryin to catch the coon and they did and got it killed on the other side of the creek. But he had a little english gyp there that had not been hunted a whole lot and just when the fight was ending she decided to swim the creek for a taste of the coon, she got half way across and I thought that she had figured out that the creek was to wide and turned to come back to our side but when she did she stood on her tail like a cork and went to fightin the water like she was goin down. We stood there watchin to see what was gonna happen and I told him I think that gyp is gonna go under, so he started taken the stuff out of his pockets to go get her and I turned my light on the high side and with the light brighter I could see about 5 foot of a snake that was about 3 to 4 inches bigger around than my forearm that was wrapped around the little dogs middle and was tryin to pull the pup under, I still to this day don't know what kind of snake it was and don't want to see another like it, but then the second part of the story was pretty weird to, as we were lookin at the snake, his old female was standing lookin at the pup in the middle of that creek and she jumped in the creek swam strait to the pup and shoved her in the back with her two front feet and turned and swam away and I guess the comotion with both dogs the snake let go and I stood there and watched the snake swim away and could not beleave what I was lookin at the pup made it back to the bank and we called the other dogs across and stood there for a long time talkin about if that old bitch dog new that that pup was in trouble or if it was a quincky dink or what went on, I prolly would not have beleaved it if I hadn't seen it with my own two eye's.

Thats wierd.  Could have been someones exotic pet snake they turned loose after it got too big, like a python or some other constrictor snake.  I watched a TV show one time about big constrictors that had been turned loose in the everglades.  If it happends in florida it could happen any where.

Got a new one to add to my list of strange items found while hunting.

While hunting in Waller County yesterday 1/4 mile inside the property line of a 1500 acre cattle ranch. Mixed in with a pasture of huisache and blackberry vines we ran across a new in the box studio monitor.  Still had the plastic wrapping around the enclosure, and the registration paperwork.  No idea how it got there.
It looked similar to these. Almost 3 feet tall.

Found a kind of crazy homeless fellow that had built him a little lean too out in the woods in the middle of nowhere once.

Had torn down some tree stands and stuff and had a him a house built.  We saw the lean too and approached it wondering what it was, the fellow comes busting out yelling and throwing stuff.  Scared the crap out of me at first.  Didnt quite expect it to be inhabatted.

Called the fellow over the place and I think he ended up having to get law enforcement to remove the fellow.

Me and a buddy were hunting one night at a place we had never hunted before around 1 or 1:30a.m. we had caught a couple hogs and were running another we had been listening to them for a pretty log time before they bayed we headed to them and about 10 foot from where we had been sitting on a log was an old cemetary with 17 old head stones dating back to the 1800s we told the landowner which had no idea it was there I have no idea if he told the historic people in the town or what, haven't been hunting there since no reason just haven't been.

We have a lot of those old cemetaries out in the woods around here.  There even used to be an ald town out in the swamp that mollaria supposedly wiped out.

Long story short.  Was in one of these old unmarked cemetaries one spring day just looking around at some of the old head stones and stuff.  Looked down at a grave and there was a 3pt. deer antler laying on the grave about where the guy's chest would be.  Looked like a hand sticking out of the ground at firts glace.  First reaction, curse and jump. :o LOL  Still got that antler around here somewhere. :)

I will add a strange find that we ran across on a hunt last month.   Homeless encampment in the woods. Complete with tent, tarps, and plenty of shopping carts.

I was hand fishing a few years back on found a man floating face down in the river. I recognized the man after the cops got him out of the water. He was also homeless.. He was shot in the head

Chris,
Thats an old water well. The water table must be very shallow. We have some like that on one of our places, same kind sandy soil as yalls place.

The strangest thing I have found is this building in the brush. The dogs were bayed up so we kicked the catch dogs out. They caught it in the building. It sounded bad hearing the hog hit the tin... didn't know what was going on. We are guessing its a coyote camp or an old green house...  ;D O0

I was in the middle of the woods with my ol lady and buddies when a wide eyed spaced out jickster carrying about a 10 foot arrowhead rake came walking up. He said he'd been looking for arrow heads the last couple of days. ;D

Maybe not the strangest thing I have seen in the woods hunting, but one of the strangest feelings I have had hunting, was when the dogs bayed one night in a cemetary, around midnight. We got there and the hog was backed up to a headstone....and you had to walk over the graves, and lean over the headstone to grab a tail......

It was kind of a strange feeling to be standing on a grave in the middle of the night, grabbing a hog by the tail, over the top of a tombstone. I kept waiting for something to reach up out of the grave and grab ME!

If I had stepped on a tree limb or something and it popped up and hit my leg, they would have had to bury me right there in that cemetary.........

Bear Grylls.  Ran into Bear Grylls one night, he was scared to death, had to help the poor fella out of the woods.

One night we were hunting when something walks out of the brush walks along the road infront of us for about 10 yards and cuts back into the brush.  The dogs didnt know what it was.  They started to whine and would just stick thier necks out where the thing had went back in the brush trying to wind it. All the dogs were trash broke but it was something htye have never ran across. It was kinda tall and slender.

We were hunting an area once where drug dealers are known to drop goods from planes into the lakes with floats on them well long story short found were two crocker sacks that hit the ground instead of the lake and pot was growing all over the place.  Needless to say we got outa there pretty quick.

That wasn't on the power lines on the Poinciana side of Davenport was it......LOL.... I ran into a sack myself.....we were riding 3 wheelers....(yes 3 wheelers...it was in the 80's..... ;D ) down the road a few miles from my house....

Well the strangest thing in my 26 yrs of hunting came last Friday night.....We had just finished a good hunt, caught a nice sow, got my two newly transfered to Texas, Florida Curs to bay their first hog.....and Maver!ck's two strike dogs and my strike dog was bayed on a hog for about 45 minutes...when we got close......they quit baying......not sure why. Well it is late and we are heading back to the truck when my strike dog, who is being led by the guy from GA I was partners on the dog with, just drops dead!!!! No struggle, no unusual breath sounds, no signs or symptoms, a perfectly healthy dog......just drops dead........THE STRANGEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN WHILE HUNTING....

I was coon hunting in Spring, Texas on Christmas eve in 1974. I was in behind where the Carter Country gun store is, before it was built. I was in a big Pin Oak flat, sitting on a log, listing to my dog working an old cold track. I hadn't been there long, when I looked over my left shoulder and saw what appeard to be a round object with red and green squares of lights on it. The lights started flashing, then they looked like they were going around this object. This thing was huge and I just knew I was going to have a close encounter of some kind. About the time I was getting realy conserned, the lights went off and in a few seconds, they came back on and said Merry Christmas. It was the Goodyear blimp that was stationed in Spring for several years.

That is a good one Bob, did you ever hear about that african lion that escaped from the traveling zoo and was walking down Treshwig Rd during the 40's-50's haha.  Actually jumped a yard fence and came in up to a house.  They said all you could hear was the cur dogs bumping their heads under the house hahah

I once found a complete 56 chevy in the bottom of a creek in Leon County.  The water and rust had done a number on it but it was a complete car when it was put there.

About 2 yrs ago I ran across a Chinease hog hunter with an enormous white dogo. The dogo's head and feet were bigger than his-(very little b.s.)!! First time I saw thatcombo in the woods and very memorable.. and then he jumped in an icy creek over his head to stick a hog in 30* weather and continued to hunt for another couple hours. I was shocked  :o I have since learned to enjoy hunting with the chinease assassin and his better smaller dogo quite a bit for some reason since then. And then on the advice of ladogos he bought me a pair of boot warmers to dry my boots out with on the back to back hunting nights, never would have guessed to get myself something like that but quite nice and very usefull and strange and..Quite toasty i might add, I would reccomend a pair.  ;)

Me my dad and my dads buddy De were coon huntin on Brushy creek on a place called tha Cannons because everyone goes out there ta mud and tha creek is like crazy deep. We cut tha dogs loose and was sittin on tha four wheeler on tha lip of tha creek, tha dogs already had a hot one struck and was runnin it when all tha sudden we hear a sound comin down tha creek sounds like all hells broke loose. We see tha head lights but still don't really know whats goin on and out of no where a car jumps tha hill goin down into tha creek tha head lights shine over our heads and were sittin on a hill. when all tha comotion finally settles down 3 or 4 teenage guys come rollin out of tha car, smoke goin everywhere they pop tha hood and one of tha boys reaches in and pulls out a handful of wires and other parts that shouldn't come off and says "Houston We've Gotta Problem". Turns out it was a rental car that one of their dads had got and went out of town leavin it with them. They called it The Rental Rocket....it was a pretty interestin night.

We've had several but the one experience that still gives me chills when I think about that morning in the woods.
It was a beautiful and extra quite saturday morning, deep in the woods of east Texas' We were  standing around the truck listening for dogs to bay again. They had just bayed once and the hog broke so we were staying quiet and listening hard. All of a sudden we heard what sounded like a great big supersonic boom in the sky. It was real lound and the sound echoed through the woods.  We looked up and saw what looked like a ball of fire. A few moment later we saw something that looked like pieces of some object falling out of the sky.
We all guessed it was a metor or something... It was later that day we found out it was the space shuttle that exploded on re-entry and killed all the people on board. Pieces landed all over that part of the country, they are still finding pieces.
I didnt actually see any pieces on the ground, didnt really look for anything. At the time it never dawned on us what it was. I guess we were to interested in catching that hog and ignorant to the fact the space shuttle was even going to land that day or coming over our part of the world.
To think about what those folks went through, if only for a few seconds and to see how many sq miles they found debris in, it  just still gives me chills to recall that and I can still hear that sound in my mind and see the ball of fire in my minds eye.

Skoal, i'll never forget that morning either. We were in the national forest and had stopped to listen for the dogs. Then we heard this sound like rolling thunder that lasted for quite some time. We were far enough south that we didn't see anything in the sky... we were all guessing a plant blew up or even a plane crashed. Found out later that afternoon about the shuttle.

(1) I was hunting alone in California about 30 years ago.  Decided to take a short cut up a steep hill below a road to my grandparents house.  After climbing an almost cliff right below the road I found a woman's driver license and credits cards and a employee picture i.d.  When I got to grandparents, called sheriff to give them stuff.  They had me take them back to site.  They then found other evidence like underwear, etc.  Turned out it was from a woman victim of a serial killer and they already had most of her body parts that were hacked up and thrown into the ocean.

(2) I was hunting alone for a state park at night and was warned about mountain lion attacks.  The park sent a mountain lion expert to show me the lion sign where I was hunting and I learned a lot about lions, but nothing useful for self-protection.  It was real foggy that night and after the dogs jumped some hogs I killed a big sow, took a blood sample, tagged her ear and the dogs were on another one.  I pulled a magnet from some spare radio collars I had in a backpack for just such situations and tossesd it onto the dead sow, than ran off into the canyon after the next one.  After making a round, I went back about 3 AM to get the sow and my collar with all the dogs on leash.  The collar was there, but the sow was gone.  I saw a drag mark in the wet grass from the fog and followed it about 100 feet away to a downed tree top.  The dogs started acting all wierd and were jerking on the leash.  I heard a noise and then silence.  I found the hog and the ear tag and parts of it were all chewed up.  I decided to call it an early night and got out of there extra fast.

(3) Same state park, I had a new dog trash a deer, but I thought he had a hog bayed.  I turned in my catch dog in her vest, leather back then.  The buck tossed her into the crotch of a tree about 8 feet off the ground where she stuck fast and then picked the trashy cur dog up in his antlers and ran off the mountain carrying the dog.  It was clearly and OH____!!!  moment.

Last year we were hunting a deer lease in Huntsville with really big woods. I was riding a horse through the middle of the leases when I rounded a corner and stumbled up on a nice car,  Nebraska plates, abandoned and with a flat. We were 2 miles from the nearest road, we searched everywhere assuming a dead body was around. Come to find out he was a young man in his 20's from Nebraska. He had mental issues ,had a breakdown and drove all the way to Galveston from Nebraska. The guy was attempting to make his way back home when he somehow ended up on this deer lease 10 miles south of huntsville. THe police picked up the guy walking down hwy 75 some 15 miles north of Huntsville, he had no recollection of where he left his car or anything else. His parents picked him up from the hospital and took him home to Nebraska.. 3 months later we found his car!

well i thought this was hilarious. One time my buddy Cole, BadBoar30, was walking back from a morning deer hunt. He was about halfway back to the trailer when out of no where a large amount of stuff landed on him. It startled him quite a bit as you could imagine. The funny thing is that on immediate impact from being hit by the strange substance he started gagging repeatedly then threw up all over himself. He then looked around to see what the crap had just happened and he looked up and saw a lone buzzard flying around. The buzzard had thrown up on him. I am laughing right now as i think about it in my head. Couldn't of happened to a better person! I thought it was a classic story but not exactly strange just rare.

Me and a few buddies were out hunting along the river levee one night.  Had a couple of new guys with me so i gave up my flashlight.  Well the dogs bayed and back then we would sprint to them.  I took out after them, i was in the lead with no flashlight( i used to weigh a lot less and be in really good shape).  I hit a briar patch and was acting like a bulldozer when something hit me in my chest knocking the crap out of me. I knew something was in front of me and everyone ran right up against me.  I yelled shine the light, when the light hit it I thought Oh My God a dinosaur.  It was looking at me a foot apart, It was hung in the brairs and i couldn't go back cus everyone was piled on top of me.  I guess me screaming like a little girl scared it enough to get out of the brairs.  Turns out my buddy back there said dang i have been looking for that dang Emu for a while. HAHAHA.  Scared the crap out of me, danged ole Emu's hurt when thay kick.

Wasnt hunting, but am working over here in Louisiana,  my rig is off 49 around Mansfield and you have to drive down 9 miles of bad road to get to it.  Went to town the other day and on return trip pulled into an old abandoned drive way to relieve myself.  I was admiring how some local had decided to dump their trash there when I saw something dead.  Some upstanding human being that should be shot decided that they didnt want their horse anymore, so they hobbled it with a water hose and tied it to a tree back in the brush.  Looked like it had been dead for awhile.  I understand the horse market sucks but that is unexcusable.  Why not just turn it loose on some of this paper land or find someone that will take it or even just shoot it but dont let it die from lack of water and food.  People never cease to amaze me.

I have seen a few crazy things in my travels but this one seems to stand out the most. A good friend and I were Black Bear hunting on Prince Of Whales Island in SE Alaska.  We had been hunting out of a boat and beaching it in bays and hunting the slat grass flats for about a week.  One day we had hunted this flat all morning and were going to walk out and hunt the afternoon and evening in the next bay over.  We decided to have lunch on the beach and were sitting and eating PB&J sandwiches when a whole pod of Dolphins 30 or so came through the very small entrance to this bay.  They came all the way up to us in very shallow water and started to act very strainge, almost beaching them selves at times. About 2 mins later a whole pod of Killer Whales 15  or so came through the entrance of the bay and started attacking the dolphins.  The larger whales would ram the dolphins so hard they would fly out of the water 20-30 feet in the air.  They would then float on the surface where the younger whales would ram the dolphins over and over hitting them hard each time.  This went on for about an hour.  My buddy and I were just watching in silence and in almost a trance.after all teh dolphins were dead and the whales had finished they just swam off.  We looked ate eachother and were just in shock.  It was the most brutal display of force I have evr seen. Nature is cruel at times but amazeing in the same breath.  Later I aske a biologist from the ADFG what was happen ing and they said that they think the whales were teaching the young tou hunt.  Funny thing was they never even tried to eat a single dolphin that I saw.  Just killed them and swam off.  Very cool thing to see probably one of a handful of people to ever see something like that.

I posted a while back about this. Last deer season i had a big black cat walk out into a clearing before i could get my mind wrapped around what it was he was back in the woods. i have always been told they dont really exist in texas so i freaked and called my buddy and told him and calmed down. well about 20 minutes later the sucker steps back out 200 yrd down the road. well i had the worst buck fever i have ever had and missed him. this was in corigan

About 15 years ago i was hunting out around pearland and found a old homestead and it had an old grain silo on it. the silo was about 40-50' tall and 15' or so in dia. made of brick. i saw a little window on the side so i stuck my head in to see. all of the sudden all he!! broke loose and it seems like 20 buzzards came out at me squawking pooping and throwing up and whooping my as$. i ran as fast as i could and they kept coming at me finally i got far enough away and they left me alone. it took a while to catch my snap then i realized i was bleeding from the back of my head. i think i must have bumped my head pretty hard on the brick around the window opening and must have knocked myself out all i remember was i was on the ground for a split second and they must have thought i was a toilet at some point. i smelled like death and never went back to look at the house.

I found a red switch and then a whole bunch of other pieces from some fighter jets that had collided in the air. Apparently there was not much for the gov to pick up so they just left the small stuff scattered. As a young boy it was great.

A couple hours from McAllen I was sitting in a stand. I saw something black in some 3 foot tall grass that was black and was taller than the grass. I was watching through my scope. It was past the property line and across a road so I was just trying to figure out what it was because there were no cows in the area. Then I saw the big long black tail and I knew it was a black cougar and it was really big. I thought long and hard about the shot. But with the Game Warden station only a few miles away I thought better of shooting across the road. The property line would not have bothered me with that big cat. Nobody was asked to believe me. But it ain't bigfoot because there are black jaguars in North America. I believe it was a cougar but I was told that jaguars do make it that far north. All I know is it was a bog black cat. But it was too far to see faint markings to confirm anything. But I did stop by the Game Wardens the next day and they said they had many reports and believed it was a Jaguar. Whatever it was it was really cool to see.

I remember a boy getting laughed at when told everybody that he saw a cougar. Just plain cougar but they where none in the area. man he got jabbed hard for two nights straight. The third night he drug the cougar into camp. I love it when somebody that was not even there calls someone a liar. To me it just says someone has not been out enough to see crazy things that nobody believes.

Sorry catacrazy, wasn't aiming at you. Just skeptical on sighting. Hunt a ranch no more than 2 miles from my house, that the deer hunters see cats on nearly every year. I've walked every cow trail, road, deer trail, and look in every bare spot. I'd love to just find a track.

I remember when the shuttle blew up. My brother assisted with the search and clean up, working with the local law enforcement. He said it was a very somber experience. Not only were they picking up pieces of the shuttle, they were also having to recover pieces of the bodies (I mean no disrespect in my reference to the victims). At one point, he said he was just in that zone of cleaning up and picking up pieces when he was surprised by what he had just picked up. He had seen that whatever it was, it was badly burned. Only after picking it up did he realize that it was someone's 'manhood'. Not something I would even want to think about.  :-\

On another occasion after Hurricane Rita, I had hunted several days in a row in a pine thicket from my bow blind. It was so thick, you had to crawl in a couple spots to get through to my blind. Every day I smelled something rotten and every day it got worse. Finally, I couldn't take it, I decided not to go back until that smell was gone. My Uncle hunted close to me and called me after a couple days and told me to get out to the area we hunted. He said it was an emergency. Our land is in a little community called Saron out in the boon-docks just a little south of Zavalla, Tx. I couldn't figure out what it could be that was so pressing. Well... I was wasting my time, I would never have guessed it in a hundred years. The smell had been coming from a dead man that was only about 60 yards from my stand. He was an elderly man that had tried to get out of the path of the hurricane and got lost in the backroads trying to get away from all the traffic that was piling up on Hwy 69. He was a diabetic and didn't have his medicine for several days. He got delerious and took off walking through the woods, leaving his truck sitting on the edge of an oil-top. Again, I don't mean to sound disrespectful of the gentleman by telling this story but I must say, it was a gruesome sight to see. The coyotes had found him long before my uncle did.

There is an underground house close to where I live. It looks like a big mound of dirt in the middle of the woods with an outhouse sitting on top of it with a few vent pipes and antennas sticking out of it. The house was built by a man during the Y2K scare who believed the world was coming to an end, needless to say, he ain't from around here. :D  I think the man moved after he found out the world did not implode, or whatever it was suppose to do.

I am not calling any of you liars...in fact i was trying to make your point not to long ago when I/we were proven wrong. There is absolutely no evidence of any black cat ever existing in north america and very few black jaguars in central/south america but no cougars. It is considered a mythical creature by all game & park and wildlife entities... I personally was made fun of so much by muleman (head of mckinney animial control) that until one is proven to exist i choose to stick with the facts...they and big foot do not exist. However i want to make two points 1 is it still seems very possible to me and 2 is that eye witness testimony is very unreliable.

WOW that is a amazing sight few will ever see!!

I know its just wikipedia but what I read in there pretty much sums up what I have heard regarding black "panthers" or cougars in North America.

Big black cats in Texas.....someone please show me an authenticated picture of one here in Texas. I have heard folks say that they are black panthers, or mountain lions. But this is from wikipedia:

There are no authenticated cases of truly melanistic cougars (pumas). Melanistic cougars have never been photographed or shot in the wild and none have ever been bred. There is wide consensus among breeders and biologists that the animal does not exist

Some say they are black Jaguars. The parks and wildlife website says " It is extremely unlikely that this cat occurs in Texas" and that is for jaguars in general. much less, the even more rare "black" version of it.

The only other animal that i guess could be confused for a large black cat would be the jaguarundi. But they are neither big nor black....TPWD Describes them as:

The jaguarundi is about twice the size of a domestic cat. It has two color phases, one grayish, the
other reddish. Length of males is about 3 feet, 6 inches, of which the tail is more than half.
Considered extremely rare in Texas, the sleek low-slung jaguarundi inhabits the brush country of
extreme southern Texas in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy counties. It reportedly eats rats, mice,
birds and rabbits. Of all the cats, this one excels in ability to spring and jump, considering its size. No
information is available on home life, growth and development. Numerous sightings of this species are
reported each year, but they are difficult to verify because of the similarity to wild house cats.
The clearing of brushlands in the Rio Grande Valley threatens to destroy its habitat in Texas.

Im not saying people arent seeing them, but i would like for someone to show me. Im just sayin....

Me too Warren! I have to do it for my wife and kids. I had BS called on me when I shared a story about my wife and two kids seeing a pair of black cats on the way to school several. They were in slow moving school traffic and the cats were stalking some longhorn cows with calves right off of 1488 near Magnolia!
We were all just talking about it last night. They got a good look at them and so did several other folks in our community that day.
What pisses me off is that all the time I have spent in these woods around here hog hunting, deer hunting, and varmint hunting, the only thing I have seen other than the regular local wildlife, has been teenagers erroneously parked in the woods and a few bigfoots.

a couple years ago on christmas eve my wife and i were at a family party and decided to go take a hike in the woods for some adventure, and after maybe 1000 yards we stumbled into the remains of some old schoolhouse. it was totally bad ask!!! there was a closet that had maybe ten uniforms for little kids and then in another room a broken chalkboard with some multiplication tables scrawled on it. there was a large room like a auditorium with thousands of govt leaflets and old newspapers. this place is near huntsville

on my bro in laws place by groveton we found his great granddaddys old homestead of in the woods, awesome pine log cabin so well built that eventhough theres a pine tree growing through it, its still standing. but the night we found it we watched "the ring" with the girls and took them out to the the place to show them the old creepy well

last one. driving with my wife when we were just dating close to angleton looking for a new place to do some more "exploring" we found a nice pasture and went to set up a picnic spot when off in the distance she saw something a little off, we put our exploring on hold and went to check it out, it was a seven year old boys handcarved headstone from like the 1850's. we said a little prayer and found a different spot to explore

in a holler near a ranch we used to lease there was an old house that had drawings all over the inside. weird stuff like the grim reaper, skulls and skeletons, bad stuff. every surface in the house was covered. walls, doors, ceiling, floors. looked like it was all drawn by the same person.  the art work was fantastic, but it was creepy as all get out. i went back a couple years ago, planning to take pictures, but all that was left was the foundation.

We were riding around a few years back shooting the breeze, it was a cool/late night.  We jumped a hog and was trying to cut him off before he made it to a retention pond, all of a sudden we seen all these lights that looked like they were floating about 5 ft off the ground and looked like they were in a circle  :o

We didnt realized it until we got right up on them but it was the bean pickers with their head lights on ... I thought for sure (and the other two in the truck did as well but they wont admit it) we were going to be abducted  :o.

Needless to say we got smoked but not before running the hog right through the middle of their operation causing our alien lights to scatter lol

Another night we were riding around and seen a truck backed into the cane, not thinking of it we drove up on it to see if it was someone else who hunted out there .... well it was a truck full of Miamians with shot guns and a bull dog who had dumped a bag of corn out trying to bait deer.

We backed up, called a game warden and then watch them pull out the gate, go accross the road and hunt the other fields before leaving ... they caught them 2 hours or so later up the road but we couldnt identify them so they let them go - it was quite unnerving to drive up on a truck load of people armed to the gills that you know are not afraid to use them if cornered!

I have seen one of them black cats here at my ranch about four years ago. It was a very large cat. It crossed the road about 30 yds infront of my truck, I didnt have a gun with me but the cat was as long as the road is wide from head to tail.
The other thing I've see that was kinda strage was a Zebra. I was out hunting with a friend a few years ago and we had stopped to open a gate at the ranch and I saw something moving towards the gate off of the fence line a little ways down. I hit it with the spot light and it was a Zebra coming to us. He said he has no idea where it came from. But its still out there at the ranch.

with all the sightings from this sight alone you would think there would be at least one picture from one in all NORTH AMERICA! Think of all the game cams out there....where are the big foot sightings?

I personally think all the strange sightings like these and aliens etc are demons like the bible talks about in the end times....who knows but otherwise there would be proof, there are scientist who dedicate there whole life to this stuff

On our 200 acre farm in hamilton on the leon river we had when i was growing up, my grandpa and my dad were scouting some white tail on top of a big hill and were under a huge oak on top of the hill after it had just stormed. They noticed an Arrow head under the big oak and started to dig and found 40+ arrow heads on top of a big rock that had the majority of it rubbed smooth from grinding grains like corn and wheat on it. It was cool.

Another time after a huge storm we walked outside of the farm house and on the gate their was a huge bald eagle! I dont think those are in N America either  ;D

After reading all of these black cat sightings I figured I would share mine with yall. Back in 2002 I was working on the Norias division of the King Ranch, early one morning me and my buddy were parked on a road waiting for our quail hunters when we saw a black cat cross in front of us about 125 yards. This cat had a long tail and to both of us was black. After word getting around some of the cowboys said that they had also seen something like that. In 2006 a few buddies of mine had a deer lease in Benavides, TX, one night while driving back to their camp they shot a black cat, they hit it, found blood and black hair but were too scared to go into the brush to look for it.  They looked for buzzards for the next few days but never found anything. In my opinion they are out there.

I havnt really had any strange hunts, i always hunted on family land so we would hang out on the old porch of the homestead. But my grandfather told me a story once when he ran dogs on the border of GA and he heard his hounds bay and as he made his way there it was dead silent other than the occasional bark. As he got close he heard a guy scream and he ran out into a clearing and the dogs were baying a man, as they were talkin the guy was lost etc etc and as they were walkin out they ran into a police search party. turns out the guy was a fugitive and his dogs found and bayed him. i thought that would be a wierd thing to happen

I'll tell mine too . Not sure the year for sure but it was about 8 years or so back and I saw something walking straight away down the road and I told myself that is what was, then turned broadside and stopped and looked at me before walking off in the brush. This is in Galveston county right by brazoria county line . I just saw it that one time but I was told that one was before years before by the farmers. We also used to see a jagurundi very frequent on thi property too but in a different spot of ranch . I also hear that there is a pair of Black cats seen every so often in the Liverpool area which is only about 5 miles from the ranch I am talking about . On thing that stuck out the most on the cat was the tail looked to be almost as long as the body !
As for stuff seen while hunting . I really isn't weird but the deer lease we are on has 4 old car on it that look like the were used as deer blinds .

Late December about 3 years ago a buddy of mine was tending to thier river camp on the Mississippi River. It was mid-week and he was by himself and had all the gates locked behind him. He is fumbling around cleaning up making a little noise, when he hears what sounds like someone hallaring. He stops what he is doing and looks up the road and hears it again except its back toward the river. He turns to see a man in a canoe in the Mississippi River in December. The man paddles to the bank and asks where is nearest sand bar is because he wanted to set up camp. My friend tells him theres not any because the water is too high. The man said he had been on the river for 3 months and all that was in his canoe was a tarp two fishing poles, some wood, and two paddles. His plans were to go to New Orleans and stay a while then get a bicycle and go up the East Coast. My friend said the smell from this man at 30 yards was unimaginable and his beard was to his waist. Some people do things a little different I guess.

here at 6 and 99 between Alvin and Manvel there's a Christmas tree farm/petting zoo that had 10-12 axis a couple years back and let em all go. I go to she sand pits over there to fish and see em over there every now and then.

My senior year of high school my ag teacher swears up and down he saw a black buck run across hwy 6 somewhere in Alvin

No black cats or Bigfoot here......
My hunting parntner & I found a skeleton of a man on the Pecos river a few years back. The poor soul had been missing for about a year, they had found his truck 'bout a mile upstream & searched the area....It seems he must have drowned, the water had level had dropped & where we found him was just at the waters edge.
I called a buddy who had retired from law inforcement & asked him wich county law we should call (we were right at the county line)
Being the good guys we are, we called the Sherrif's office & led them to the cite. The funny thing about the whole deal was that when "Beuford T. Justice"shows up in his mirrored aviator sun glasses, he looks my partner & I up and down like we had just cut the man's throat!! I kindly asked if they were through with us and we went on huntin'....
Were still hoping to find something strange, like a hog!!

I also found a old wooden golf club not to far from here.

Then this old VW van. We ask the land owner about it and he toldus the story. Said some people owed him some money and wouldn't pay so he went a took there can one night when him and his buddies had been drinking next day woke up and saw the van and was to embarrassed to take it back so he just stuck it off in the pasture and it hadn't moved since.

It was a hot July night last year summer in south texas. My buddy mike and I decided to run the dogs on this piece of property that is right across the road from a Reynolds plant called la Quinta. It was a grain field that was getting alot of damage by hogs/javalinas So we thought hell lets go give it a try. We turn the dogs loose and right away we get on a pack of javalinas, get the dogs off an keep moving along. After running most the field we decided to load the dogs up and head home, well half way between the field I begin to see a pair of bright red eyes right by the milo field which is something we see most of the time, but what caught my attention was that the eyes were alot taller then the milo plants which are normally chest high in this area... So I ask mike to stop and to throw his high beams on the eyes to verify what it is. Soon as he did so it got dead silent we both stared at that thing in awww because it was standing upright like a human would on two legs... We then decided to shine the spotlight on it and when we did it moved in a very distinct way like trying to figure out what we were. It swayed its head left and right dropped down on all fours then made a run for the field we could hear it breaking and rusting in there sounded like something big. Just couldn't believe what we had just seen we drove up to where it was standing and the dogs begin to throw out a devastating howl... Was gonna look for tracks but after seeing that thing and hearing the dogs howl which never happens I wanted out of there pronto! hahaha my buddy ask if we should turn the dogs loose I said your crazy lets go I don't like this. To top it off I look at the clock and 3 am on the dot idk but that story still makes my hair stand up when I tell it because I know what I saw and it wasn't a creature I'm familiar with God knows what it was... I wasn't gonna stick around to find out ill tell you that :D

all the guys at our lease are gonna be on the look out for the BLACK cat this year and will hopefully get to ground check him. I am not a liar and know what i saw. It was not the sun angle or shadows, I saw it in two different spots and it was the same BLACK each time. It may not have been native to texas but when i looked though my 18 power scope at the back of its head all of my doubts were gone I had just shot at a black cougar, leopard, moutain lion, panther or wtf ever ya want to call it. monterquest here i come rolleyes

1 more to add, doesn't compare to some of ya'lls encounters but it made me and my buddy a bit uneasy..........My buddy david has a hair over 2000 acres just south of uvalde......beautiful land, anyway we were up there filling feeders and dove hunting before deer season, we decided to make a few stands one night to kill a coyote or bobcat for the hell of it, anyway we are about 1/2 mile from their house driving down a white rock road on the property in the middle of nowhere, we turned a corner and noticed something small laying in the road......we pulled up to it and got out to take a look (keep in mind it is the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere) we walk up on a freshly killed rabbit with its head taken smooth off and not another scratch on its body layin in the middle of the road..........obviously an animal of some sort killed it but it was still a bit unnerving........we ended up tossin it in the truck (no reason to leave perfectly good bait in the road haha) we drove about a 1/4 mile further into the property and set up on a pipeline crossing looking down into a draw and left the rabbit tied up into a tree about 5' off the ground with a piece of muletape down in the draw along with the speaker to my fox pro about 6' from it on the ground and started calling.........we were alternating between lookin left, right and down into the draw, we were set up about 125yds from where we tied the rabbit in the tree and sat for about 30 minutes calling on and off, I killed a coyote on the pipeline to the left and we got out and picked it up, on our way back through the draw we realized that the rabbit was gone and NO B.S. when my buddy picked up the speaker there was blood on it, apparently whatever grabbed it did it with some authority because it bit through the muletape........crazy night.........We blew it off and figured it was either a cat or coyote but it was just really wierd the way everything happened, finding it dead in the road, tying it up and then having it taken again without ever seeing the culprit..........things like this are what keeps me going back for more!

1st. There are black cougars.

2nd. The thing you saw standing up, I'm not saying this is it for sure, but i have seen about 8 or 9 whitetail doe in breeder pens across the country who stand on their hind legs to look at you when your doing something they are interested in. I know that's not alot of them in comparison to the total numbe that I'm around all the time, but it's enough that I don't think it funny or odd anymore.  I'm not talking about momentarily lifting up and then going back down, I'm saying I've seen die that have it down as a habit to stand upright to watch me and the guys and can hold the pose for a good while.
It would make sence that in a grain field one would stand to see you and then get down to bolt.

I'm (again) not doubting you, just saying it's possible.

Not real strange but me and two of my buddies were hunting close to mud creek in reklaw tx one night and strolled up on a good sized (75-80lbs) black cat standing on a downed tree. He was so black all you could see was a faint out line and two huge yellow eyes. My partner had a .22 pistol and was gunna take a shot at about 40 yards and I told em "heck no!! You'll just piss it off!!" So we eased on out the way we came and went to the opposite side of the property to hunt that night.

That next year we did walk up on a tombstone out it the middle of no where.. Couldn't even read what it said it was so old. Perfect shape of a tombstone tho.

In about 1989 or so i standing in the living room looking out the window and saw a big black cat cross the place about 300 yards down the road. In 94 or so while gathering cattle found a calf up in a tree 10 ft. or so. This was about 2 miles down river from my house . There has been several times sence then that the dogs would come back to me and just stand around whinning. We left that areia and they went back to hunting. BIG CAT I'M SHURE !!!!!

Sorry to bust your bubble but Looked it up once again and there is NO and I mean NO authenticated sightings, photographs, animals shot, or animals bred that are black mountain lions. They have no melanistic gene.

You're calling it a panther and a panther includes lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, mountain lions, and jagaurundi.  Now people could be seeing a black cat that is a jaguar this far north, that's been documented in Mexico right across the border, and then there's jaguarundis, which can also be black. But it's yet to be documented around here.

But hey youcant believe everything you read and especially nothing you hear.

Sorry

We've seen two in the four yrs we've lived on our property, AND we have heard the 'screaming' a few times at night.

You have seen two black big cats ?

If you have been in the woods long enough you will see the sights of a big cat. They are out there. A few years back I caught a deer in a hog trap and it was half eaten pulled through a 4x4 panel, with claw marks all over it. Not just scratches, but deep gashes , quite sure a coon or yote did'nt do this. As for me I am sure they r out there.

We were sitting around the fire at deer camp a few  years ago I was only 12 I think and we heard this scream about two times... lets just say I had to change into something else ;D and then awhile after that about a quarter mile from camp by some cattle we saw one for about a split second it took up all of this small road and had a loong tail.  Also on the way to a mud run by red river alil before dark  saw a cougar watching about 30 head of cattle and it was just sitting waving its tail back and forth abouts 50 yards from the cows. It blended it well with a few stumps and trees he was just waiting for dark to get one

my dad has had TWO black cats coming at him at a slow stalk while in the woods before and he had bumped his scope just b4 and so he when he shot he was shooting way high and even after he shot 3 or 4 times they still came at him but my grandpa and uncle walked around a corner of the trail and that ran em off....my dad isn't a liar and he doesn't hallucinate either

Once again, I'm saying there is absolutely no physical proof they exist.

Heck I might believe in Black cats as well as big foot, I hope my dogs bay one of the two up everytime I walk in the woods. Heck I was hunting in TX and found some panther tracks one time and then figured out it was my Cur dogs track in sand.  You know what they say about big feet  ;D

I'm sure this has already been said but wasn't there a bunch of big cats that got out from multiple places during the hurricane? There's no way they caught them all. IJS

This is a friendly argument, if you take it personal that's your problem.  No need to get all fired up over something so small.

You know what you shot at, we don't. We are going by facts that's been proven is all I'm saying.  I'm no calling you a liar because I don't know you.  I don't lie and expect the same respect. But anytime you start talking about something that's said NOT to exist then you have to be prepared for some lashback and controversy over this topic.  Mountain lions exist, black ones do not.  Black jaguars exist and they've been known to come all the way into northern Mexico, Texas isn't much furher and cats don't know country boundaries but it has yet to be physically proven. Just friendly debate is all.

Here's something to think about:

Do you believe every person that steps up and says they've been abducted by aliens? If not, then it's the pot calling the kettle black by getting upset cuz we don't believe you.

I am pretty sure herding some cats would be more productive then arguing with you.

I was the biggest none believer out there because of how much time I had spent in the woods and NEVER seen a big cat. But I know I saw one and I had two buddies standing right beside that saw it as well. We had some sure nough rough dogs at the time and when the dogs found out what was in the area that wanting nothing to do with it and headed the opposite way. There was nothing someone could tell me to believe before until I was in the woods looking at it. So for all the non believers, carry a good sized pistol or rifle and if or when you see one SMOKE HIS A$$ and let's enjoy the pics >:D!
