Title: BMC Bobtail or Long tail Post by: gomer on May 03, 2012, 05:36:10 pm I just had a litter of Foundation Black Mouth Curs about half of them are natural bobtails. I was considering docking the rest of them because I just like the bobtail look, but I am going to sell some of them and don't know what other people want. What do Yall think?

Title: Re: BMC Bobtail or Long tail Post by: jerryg on May 03, 2012, 06:30:12 pm Thought i read somewhere about not breeding bobtail dogs to bobtail dogs. Some genetic defect or something? If that is the case u or your client may never know.

as said earlier, if someone buys a bobbed natural long tail thinking he is a natural bob he will never breed it to another natural bob (when in fact he could have). you can get some pretty screwy stuff physically, breeding two natural bobs together. when you send in for your pup papers (if you do), don't send them all in as natural bobs, only the ones born that way. the man made bob tails are long tails genetically. (obviously). i bob or tip everything i keep, but always tell the folks that are getting one to do what they like, i'll even do it for them when they pick it up. all it takes to bob an 8 week old pup on up, is a castrating band... have a good one, hope the pups turn out to be aces... Title: Re: BMC Bobtail or Long tail Post by: Noah on May 03, 2012, 11:35:59 pm Agreed. Breeding for bobtails can create deformitive culls, in that, the tail can be so short as to actually take away from the spine. Not a good thing when you're looking for functional hog dogs.
Title: Re: BMC Bobtail or Long tail Post by: Reuben on May 04, 2012, 01:47:01 am Agreed. Breeding for bobtails can create deformitive culls, in that, the tail can be so short as to actually take away from the spine. Not a good thing when you're looking for functional hog dogs. x2...if breeding dogs with veryshort natural bob tails it is possible to get dogs with spinal cord bifida...open spine...not good. even dogs that appear to be long tailed can actually be considered bob tailed...all they need is to have one vertabrae missing and the dog is will be considered a natural bob tailed dog... I like bob tailed dogs but prefer to have them naturally long tailed befor bobbing...I always kept track of every pup in the litter as to who was born natural long or short tail for breeding purposes... Title: Re: BMC Bobtail or Long tail Post by: gomer on May 04, 2012, 10:54:36 am I am planning on removing the dew claws on the pups that I bob so that I know that the ones that have dew claws are natural. Thanks
