Title: Demodectic mange
Post by: Izz on May 09, 2012, 01:57:00 am
Just recently one of my 6 month old pups had a spot under his neck. And im already 100% sure its mange. I was wondering what kind of remedies on here would be helpfull. Main one ive heard of is the ivormec treatment. If so be it what exact doses should i start with. And this exact same mange i had on my 10 month old pup. Its as if its almost contageous but i heard its not. But makes me wonder. I recently switched their food about 1-2 months ago. Dont know if that has anything to do with it.

For the mites it all depends on the weight of the dog. Start with .75 cc for the first few days (3-4) then bump it up to 1cc a day. Once a day for 30 days. It will start to clear up after a week or two, but don't stop. Just got done with a gyp of mine. She was bald and pink. Now shes lookin good.

Go to Tractor Supply and get a bottle of Prolate/Lintox-HD. Mix 1 oz. to a gallon of water. Use sponge or rag and thoroughly soak the skin of all your dogs. Treat twice a week for a couple of weeks. Also if you can find you a tube of Nu-Stock at the feed store to put on the spots between treatments with the Prolate/Lintox do it. If you can't find the Nu-Stock use just the Prolate. The Prolate is labeled for cattle but will work for dogs.

My vet explained it to me that demodex tic mange is not contagious but typically a genetic weakness that doesn't allow the dogs immune system to fight off the mites that cause this mange. Most all dogs have the mites on them, but are able to keep it under control (even humans have demodectic mites in their eyebrows).

He said ivomectin was the best and most cost effective way to treat it. I treated a dog for about four weeks with it daily. It is very weight specific though, overuse can be dangerous for the dog.

The change in food cod have something to do with it, any stress (even as simple as chaning food) to the dogs immune system can cause demodectic to flare up and some foods heavy in corn / wheat seem to make it worse as does wooden kennels (not saying you have them).

This stuff is tempermental and Ivomec daily until it clears up at .10 cc / lb will clear it up, you should gradually back the dog off the Ivomec to see if they can keep the mites off themselves...otherwise it will be an everyday (or what ever the least you can give while keeping hair on him/her) routine for the rest of it's life.

My vet gave me the 'remedy' and aside from Ivomec the only other thing he recommended was an immiticide called  Mitaban and it is EXTREMELY harsh on the animal.

Another thing that helps it is spay/neuter, something to do with the hormone levels in the animal can affect the severity....according to my vet.

It's ok Izz. I'm a unicorn guy too. This is an issue and draw back from this breed specifically. It's a genetic defect passed on from the parents. Sucks definitely.  Best thing for the breed is to fix the dogs that have it and not breed them. Ivomec should clear it up but be aware it can and prolly will flare back up at some point.

Read the description on the Prolate/Lintox. This stuff works.

Go to your local feed store and ask for nu-stock I used it on one of my dogs and within a week he was back to normal it's a paste that you just rub on the spots works real well
