Title: Water lickers Post by: southtexasff on June 04, 2012, 04:30:55 pm Anybody have lickers installled in their kennels? Was gonna run a water line to my kennel set up and was thinking of putting some lickers in all the kennels. . Only question is will the water be hot? I have noticed when I turn on the hose the water takes a while before cooling down, its not even warm its hot. Is that because the water hose will trap the heat causing the water to get hot? I plan on using PVC and running it under ground. Any input?

You can use PVC under ground but not where it will get chewed or pulled. My dogs eat everything even the kennels.

Title: Re: Water lickers Post by: southtexasff on June 04, 2012, 05:16:12 pm The main reason I wanna put in lickers is cause I hate the birds drinking or dipping stuff in the water. The other reason is I have a pit that will end up ripping his metal water bucket in half.
Title: Re: Water lickers Post by: charles on June 04, 2012, 05:25:04 pm insulate the bucket, and put a hot wire on it so when the pit decides to sink teeth to it, he/she gets the shock of their life

Title: Re: Water lickers Post by: Reuben on June 05, 2012, 11:24:50 pm I've been using the liksit for many years...an easy way is to use a sharp shooter shovel and make a narrow trench...does not have to be perfect because the 3/4" PVC is flexible. I tied in to the back yard water faucet under ground and ran the pvc out and tee'd off to the different kennels...I then installed 2 water faucets where it comes out from under ground...One on the outside and one facing in to the kennel and then installed the metal licker...Years ago when I first ran the pvc I tee'd in with a 3/4 galvanized nipple but this time around I used all PVC and I have't had a problem with the dogs tearing it up...The outside faucet at each kennel is for a short water hose for each kennel...I went out and bought me a high quality 100' hose and cut it in three pieces and made three hoses from it...
insulate the pvc where it comes out of the ground... spend a little time setting up right and it will save you time in the long run...not to mention it will look better and you won't have to deal with keeping the birds out of the water bucket and the algae won't ever be a problem...The birds can be carriers of disease that can transfer to a dog or pups... Title: Re: Water lickers Post by: KevinO. on June 06, 2012, 10:10:29 am I have some "lickers" in my kennels and I really like them. I ran PVC under the kennel and came up through the slab with metal pipe so the dogs couldn't chew it up.
Here is a link to the lickers. http://www.petco.com/product/6141/Lixit-Outdoor-Faucet-Dog-Waterer.aspx And here is picture of my setup. I haven't had a dog chew them up too bad and I used all PVC pipe and fittings and that's cus these bird dogs can get pretty bored in the summer! Also the water isn't much hotter than normal especially in this S. Tx heat!!!
