Why is it that you can rarely catch a hog that you see before turning dogs loose? I haven't seen hogs on my place in months, but last night just before dark I was riding around looking at the pastures I have sprayed for weeds and saw a group run into a little strip of woods. I went to the house and got some of my rougher dogs and went back. They hit the track and blew in and found the pigs. They took off and ran them about a half a mile before my Hannah gyp overheated and I had to go rescue her. My feist Spanky went on a ways without her but got hot and came back. It should have been an easy catch but it wasn't. This has happened to me numerous times. It makes me wonder if maybe the element of suprise makes them easier to bay when the dogs range out and find them before they know I am around. Anyone else have any ideas of why this is?

Seen it many times. I have seen groups of hogs and road around them before I put dogs out. Let the dogs just hunt them. Not sure why but its a tuff decision to make when u see them standing. I have even let the hogs go bed before i put the dogs out.

Not too long ago we had a whole hunting party resting at edge of the river and we had a hog run right in to the bunch of us . Two of the dogs saw the hog and the chase was on , but as we know they did not catch the hog . Very seldom do we catch a hog we see . That’s hunting!!!!

That is a damn fact!!!  ;D   Never underestimate the element of suprise!!!  Seems the easier it is sometimes the harder they are to catch lol

Me and a couple of guys went hunting just the other day to try a new dog. We found nothing although on the way out a group ran across the road right in front of us the dogs bailed outta the truck and the chase was on. They ran right by a big sow standing in the open and bayed a baby in a sticker bush. My c/d in training caught him and when I got him off the little daddy didn't marry mommy slipped the grip of my buddy and ran off. We caught no pigs. First for us and we were bummed.

Same thing happens bear hunting too, seen it happen several times. Hard thing to do but best to wait a little.

Thats what happened to us last night... Saw a group and they bolted before we ever stopped the trucks...

All we had were pups and they trailed, bayed for a second, and then we got burnt...   :'(

Seen it in person and heard it from a few different old timers.. Sure sometimes it works but I'd say most of the time we don't catch the hogs that we see before we put the dogs on them.

I've experienced the same thing many times.  Turn loose on a hog I see and get burned 9 times out of ten.  Its tempting to dump the dogs when you see hogs but I believe you are better off not doing it.  Like c-ward said drive by them let them bed down first.  Hunt a different spot on the place then hit that last.  Hogs are not necisarily scare of dogs but they are definately scared of humas.  I think that explains most of it.

well I we havent seen hogs in okla standing or running but a handleful of times , but have caught hogs everytime we have seen them , never the whole pack , but never have been skunked in that situation [  YET ]

Its happen alot to me but actually took one pup out riding this morning and seen some pigs turned him loose on em an had one bayed for good 2min til it finally broke. If i had cd been caught hog. Dont get burnt all the time like that. I think hogs know your comin and they haul a$$ and never look back

Many years ago, there was a theory about varmints having an ability to surpress their scent when startled,or scared. I never did fully believe this, but who knows?

I have seen this many times. I think the hogs know that the people are the real business end of the deal and once they have the presence of people, they ain't gonna stop running unless they have no other choice. Majprity of the time, I only catch hogs that I see before I cut the dogs is when I only cut the cd by themselves. The hogs usually are right inside the woods and wait to see what happens. A dog comes in and barks and the race is on. A dog goes in and catches, that hog better hope he can drag that dog faster than I can run through the woods.

Actually had this happen on a guided hunt two weeks ago. Luckily, cut cur dogs first an they got on a big sow who was trying to protect her shoats and deuce caught a boar on the edge of a field right by the creek. Cur dogs were cut first and the sow and shoats ran to the creek and she turned to fight tryin to back them off the shoats. The boar ran and deuce hammered him right in the edge of the woods. Can't beat a good leggy cd in a situation like that.

Also lost a good boar in a tournament about a month ago that I should have sent the cd on in the field, ended up losing him with some really good cur dogs on the ground.

Only time I've had luck catching hogs I've just seen is sending straight catchdogs... But without they're vest, obviously I wouldn't do this on a Big Hog and I will send at least two... Its a Little risky and has had me Nervous the few times I've done it...

I have had this happen a few times they either get on scent an can't finish it or they don't act like they smell anything when I dumped them out right where I saw the hog , I have yet to catch a hog I have seen before puttin dogs on them except some I snuck up on with just a CD

I would seem to think that hogs that have been dogged alot and know whats coming would tend to not stop until there in the next area code  but on another note hogs that arent pressured as much will watch a feed truck drive by and not seem to really give mind to there presence , in some of the areas we hunt there is always a dog barking you can hear , sometimes its a fight to keep your dogs from going , sometimes they run all the way to the dog and see it was a mistake and come back , so I think were I hunt they have heard dogs barking all the time and doesnt seem to bother them , I really think in our case they haul A$$ when hearing the ATVs coming threw the woods like dozers , one of the ranchers will have hogs behind his house with 2 dogs raising heck , it dont seem to bother them to the point they leave they country
