Title: Antler dogs Post by: Sneaky Creek Kennel on June 14, 2012, 08:34:51 am Just wondering how many of yall have or have heard of antler hunting dogs. A guy I work with recently bought a puppy to train for this. And it got me to thinkin. Was wondering if yall had ever had any dealings with this type dog.

He called a few months ago and said the dog is doing awesome at finding them. He said they have competitions somewhere for finding sheds?? I wonder what a shed dog trashes on...

It's incredible that a shed that's been laying in the woods for months even has a scent but apparently it does.
Title: Re: Antler dogs Post by: BA-IV on June 14, 2012, 10:37:12 am That was my thoughts. What exactly is the dog smelling for or is it alot of sight hunting as well?
Heck if they can smell a shed weeks even months old why can't my dog take a day old track, besides that they suck ;D Title: Re: Antler dogs Post by: Mike C. on June 14, 2012, 11:20:14 am When I was guiding on the King Ranch there was an intern from a school in Illinois that took a young Lab pup and started workin him on sheds. I personally thought he was waitin his time but by them time he left back home I have to say the dog was finding sheds on a regular basis.

nah, i know a few guys that do that, i haven't kept up with shed prices, but at one time good fresh sheds were bringing upwards of six dollars a pound. that was a few years ago, don't know what the market is now. the guys i know of all use labs. antlers smell like antlers for a long time. when you put a grinder to them you can smell it burning, even on the real old sheds. the dogs just walk along till they wind one, then go pick it up. |
