Title: Hog Wrasslin' 101....
Post by: Noah on June 20, 2012, 05:18:21 pm
Alright, I just got my A$$ chewed out by a friend that watched one of my video clips of catchin' a hog...  rolleyes ;D  He claimed I was being "overly cautious", in that, I left the CD on the hog until I had good control...

I'll get right to the point... He says that as long as you got a (flipped)hog's top/front leg in your hand, there is NO WAY that hog can stand up.

Now... in all the jiu-jitsu wrasslin' I've done with hogs over the years....  ;D    Yes, that does work MOST of the time...

BUT(and that's a VERY BIG BUT), I have had a handful still manage to get that bottom/rear leg under them and get their hind end up.... AT WHICH POINT  :-\  .... it usually gets REAL interesting hahaha...  :o ;D

... I will admit, these instances I've had a hog stand up on me, "maybe" I did not administer "technique" properly on that top/front leg(I doubt it, but it is possible I guess)... what usually was to blame, was the hog.

... some hogs are just plain strong.  You think you got them one minute... the next minute you on your head ;D

Having seen this enough to respect it, I do not fool with a big hog anymore.  I leave a catchdog on his head until I have FULL control, or at least that back/bottom foot tied up...

... maybe not the most "sporting" way, but I don't give a chit.  It keeps me and mine safe so I can work/hunt another day  ;)

So, share your hog wrasslin' skills, always open to new techniques!!!!  ;D

Noah to me it seems the hogs are easier to tie when then catchdog is broke off. But yes there are some hogs that can stand up. If you ain't careful . I want the catchdog broke off as fast as I can. Thats just me. And if I can do it with out a catch dog thats even better.

Chance, you're one I'd damn sure like to watch administer this "technique" lol...  next few good hogs you get, try and get some video of you catchin'/tyin' if you can... I would appreciate being able to see how you do it!

Not the best tieing video. But a funny one if you listen to what the kids are saying . Good hog but not real bad.

Good vid Chance, I want to see you flip/tie by yourself though so as I can study your technique!!!  ;D  And make sure it's a good one  ;D

This is a conversation all me and my friends get into every once in a while when talking about flippin'/tyin' a good hog solo... "well I do this"... "well I'd do that" lol... when I hunt with those same friends and we do get on a good one... ain't never anybody hollerin' for help ta get back hahahaha  ;D

I do know that there are some ol' country boys that can damn sure throw/tie better than me, I'd just like to see them do it so I can learn how!!!  ;)

Again, this is in reference to one of them ol' "cock-strong" SOBS... NOT your typical bitch hog... so getting that on video may be difficult at best

The one place where I see a lot of people mess up and have a real hard time is when they are just trying to hold them down.  All you've gotta do is grab that top leg at the hock and more or less lean back with that leg.

No haha this time I wasn't being sarcastic or joking. I actually meant that I want to go with cward Friday if possible and will do the camera work.

I've flipped plenty of hogs and done quite a few who weren't caught by catchdogs. Chance has caught probably 10x more than me if not more.

Noah, Ive always flipped a hog with is back legs and then kneeled on it and held its legs like it was a calf that we were doctoring. But now that I think about it, ive had many big calves dump me on my head.  :D

There are a lot of times when we dont even turn the cd loose.... but ...
I don't care what technique is used, im sure that there is a hog out there that can take anyone to school.  ;D

You talkin' about the front leg or back?  Our terminology may be different, but I assume you are talking about the front...  which, yes, that does work most times...

You learn how to tie a hog yet?  :P ;D

Had one get up on me and seen one get up on a buddy.  Seems they both were in a ditch where they could push back then up with that back leg.  Now both times there was help and put it right back down but if had been just one person it would have got western.

I've had one time where I thought one was about to get up from under me. It was the 9th hog and final hog of the night last summer and I was beat, dogg tired. I crawled off into the thicket and grabbed leg didn't have room to get it flipped so I just layed my chest on his butt while I got some ties on his front legs. He couldn't do nothing as I am a heavy load to walk off with. Or so I thought.
Turned out ok, just jerked the ropes on his front legs and they flipped him so I could get to sittin right on him.

I usually take the front bottom leg and hold it up past their pecker, they ain't usually goin nowhere.

Been there myself, it has happen to me 3 different times, all were due to mud and me not having a good grip, luckily i havent met many hogs that can stand on 2 legs with 250lbs on there back tellin em otherwise lol

... had a bo-hog stand up on me a year or two ago, told my buds to pull the bulldogs off... "I got this"... lol...

... sumbitch got that bottom/rear under him and up he went... I sprawled out and leaned back on that "top"/front leg as hard as I could... so hard, the "pop" I heard was not his leg breaking, it was my rib lol... I got his ass rolled back over, but I had a hard time coughing for the next month hahaha... if he'd been another 10% stronger, he would have had me.

Until I get that rear/bottom, I just don't feel safe...

... having said THAT....  ;D  I've had all the above and had a good one "buck" and it don't matter WHAT legs you "had" aholt of lol  ;) ;D

Yeah, yeah, yeah I got it down pat :D

Front leg, just like you would a calf. A lot of people lean forward and try to put all of their weight on them and just try and manhandle 'em, which if they do get up some how, your gonna get dumped on your head! I think when you lean back with 'em it brings that bottom leg up and they can't get traction, if that makes any sense?

Also, one reason I really don't like real "catch dogs" is I like the dogs to let go once I get my hands on the hog. Absolutely hate a dog pulling on the hog for that split second after you flip a hog til you get on top of it, especially if there is a dog on each ear. I don't like anybody helping me try to flip a hog either, most of the time they just get in the way.

Now that kinda makes sense John, when I have got in trouble in the past, it's ALWAYS me gettin' pulled forward and my head hits the dirt trying to hold one... maybe I'm just not leaning back enough... I will try that next time for sure

Thats exactly what i do and place 1 knee behind the ear and 1  right before the hind leg and rarely have a problem.

I always straddle em after i get em flipped. Grab a front leg and sit on top of em. Lot times i dont leg em either i will jump on ther back and grab em by hair on ther backs when they are caught. Especially in water is that works good for me

When it is just Allen and myself we leave the CD on until we have him hobbledif it is a stout hog....and I have never seen a hog get up on him and his buddy until the other weekend.

The dogs bated one about 150 and after they got him flipped they started dragging him out (my husband's friend and his brother).  I was walking in front of them to put the CD up when I heard someone say oh ****! And my husband say 'watch out Gary', some how the hog stood up on the brothers and he was doing his best to give the one a good rooting.  As I started to let the CD go to give Gary some help his brother football tackled the hog and mugged him down....it was a relief the hog didn't have teeth and that I didn't let the CD go cause it could have been bad.

I guess because as a kid it was drilled in my head about how bad a hog can be that I am leery as all get out about them and I have watched my husband and these other two catch some big hogs when it was only two of them....and then they let a 150 pounder work them over....I will stick to the CD helping out lol

Ha Noah I know what you mean, but I've never had trouble with them standing back up after I have the front leg and it flipped. The hard part for me is sometimes throwing a big hog and having him get his feet back under him before I can get the front leg pulled back.

In the bumpers hunt w/ Chance we caught all those hogs and only used the bulldog 4 times all weekend. It was something to catch alot of those hogs when they were still being bayed by the cur dogs. It was so hectic, dogs baying hogs everywhere. Guys (chance, his kids, JJ and nick) would come flying in off their horses and we'd get right in there and catch the hog with no dogs caught. Dogs Pulling tail and nuts but no ear. That hog would be flipped and tied so fast. We caught 11 hogs in 45 minutes. Not once did we use the cd and they were all 150-200 hogs. It was some of the most fun and work I've ever had hunting. I wish we has video of it because it was something else

Part of the equation may have to do with how long the hog is bayed before you get there. With several dogs working a hog, it will wear down quickly.

The hog that gave us heck the other night was only bayed a couple of minutes before we got to him. We just happened to  be close when he was struck and he only had one loose baying dog on him until we got next to the field he was in and turned another on loose. Then all we had to do was drive down to a crossing and back up the field... and we werent driving slow  ;). With a little luck and four wheelers you can be at a bay real quick every now and then.

The hog ran at jj trying to cut him and caught him by his ears I ran up and leged the hog. Jj had no choice but to catch him.lol it was a great hunt with some top notch hands.

Excellent point miss Dinah, the style of dogs we hunt/the way we hunt often stop a hog so fast the hog can still be real "green"(fishing term for a big fish that's not worn down enough to bring in the boat)... a green hog can be a handful compared to one that's been worn down by the dogs for a while.

I'd still love for any of yall to show me some videos of JUST YOU catchin'/rollin'/tyin' good hogs by yourself....

Anyone who claims they have never had a bad situation throwing and  tying down hogs is either full of #hit, or hasn't tied enough of them yet. ;) Doesn't have two be a 250lb boar hog either for things to get bad. Good point about hogs being "green "also.

Gotten to old for tying one any more, but yesteryear , the first order of things was to tie one hind leg to something  solid. If something goes wrong  you don’t have to run so far . If you hunt long enough you will find out that hogs will do anything to escape and are capable of things yet to be seen!!!! Hun’t Um Up!!!
