Title: Coon dog Post by: SLacowboy on June 22, 2012, 11:15:40 am I'm interested in a coon/varmit/yard dog. My fiance wants a dog for the yard to keep varmints out and let her know when people get to the house. I have a pen full of cowdogs that I use strictly on cattle. We live up against a swamp and bayou and it is full of coons. Lots of rice and crawfish around. If I'm going to feed a dog I would like to get something out of it. I figured she could have a yard dog that I could take out in the woods and tree a few coons. I don't have big tracks of woods to hunt so I want to stay away from hounds. I had a deposit on a mountain cur pup but supposedly the bitch was false bred and now the guy wont answer any of my emails. I would really like some kind of cur. Anyone know anybody who hunts coons with cur dogs?

Title: Re: Coon dog Post by: UNDERDOG on June 22, 2012, 10:06:16 pm Find someone with good curs that they regularly use to tree game with....sounds like a good cur would suit you.

Title: Re: Coon dog Post by: UNDERDOG on June 22, 2012, 10:08:30 pm Southwest Louisiana There are a good handful of tree dog folks in your area with good curs. Title: Re: Coon dog Post by: SLacowboy on June 22, 2012, 10:16:36 pm I may have found me a mt cur pup. I read on here daily and I know everyone has different opinions on everything. For example, not trying to open a can of worms, bay pen and wood dogs. Everything I read on mnt curs they all have dogs that are hall of fame and champions of comp hunts. Does this show proven dogs or am I better off finding something that you don't hear much about? I just dont really know much about these comp hunts and that seems to be everyones selling points. I very familiar with cowdog trials and I know I have opinions along with lots of others. I know a pup is a gamble no matter what kind of business we are talking about.
Title: Re: Coon dog Post by: jdt on June 22, 2012, 10:32:56 pm your exactly right about the advertised dogs sla , i'd rather get pups from folks that use them and have to wright out the pedigree from their memory .
even if they ain't got a flashy kennels and name . ;) Title: Re: Coon dog Post by: halfbreed on June 22, 2012, 10:40:01 pm sla go to the n k c [ national kennel club ] web site and look up the trial scheduals they should have a few in your area . you could meet up with some pretty good folks . them squirrel feild trials are alot of fun . and it's reeeaalll hard to cheat in the daylite ;D
Title: Re: Coon dog Post by: matt_aggie04 on June 23, 2012, 11:57:55 am I would find a hybrid or treeing cur, there are quite a few in your area. I bought a young treeing cur out of Alabama that I am real pleased with. A treeing cur is usually a cross between a cur or fiest and a hound. A hybrid being a cross between a cur and a fiest. You get a smaller framed dog that handles really well but is gamey as hell and trees hard, they typically have pretty good noses also.
