Title: Persimmon?
Post by: KevinN on August 19, 2012, 10:10:41 pm
Is this a Persimmon? I have a few trees on my place with these fruits. They don't seem to be ripe yet. Just wondering what they are.

Its not like the ones we have in my woods. split it open and give us a look at the seeds. The ones here look like opium poppys a little. and the leaves on the trees are totally different.

It's a munson plum tree or wildgoose plum.

I see the seeds on poppy seed buns. However, I meant to see the seed to see it was a persimmon seed or not. I have seen real life opium in a customers flower bed. she was nintey eight and told me the seeds had been handed down for generations. I couldn't believe it she live on a corner lot as well. I googled it that night and it was for sure opium poppys. big purple flowers and looked exactly the same. no variation. I asked if she was afraid of being arrested. she looked at me like I was stupid and said"I'm 98 years old what do I care? They wont arrest me."

Back here in Brazoria County we have persimmons and they are much bigger and they turn a deep yellow orange...and you don't want to eat one unless it is very ripe...

Went to the hill country a couple weeks back and saw another type of persimmon...

I am interested to know for sure what that fruit is...kinda looks like some wild plum...

The leaves look like persimmon tree leaves. I picked a bunch or persimmons on a lake in ne tx and they were smaller than an average sized red plum. The fruit looks like a persimmon too. What does the top where it attached to the limb look like?

The fruits are all small and covered by a white kinda powder lookin stuff unroll you wipe it off. Look appetizing but I know they are not ripe. Guess it wouldn't kill me to taste a bit even if its poisonous. Here goes......ok, bitter and sower right now. Probably more bitter than sower. The seed is big. Takes up about a third of the fruit. Here's a couple more pics.

white american. I did some research and found out you can buy opium seeds all day long. They sell them in seed catalogs and everything. You can buy the stem and pod for flower arrangements. I know a restaurant that has some on the wall. anything other than seeds though is drug possession. If you have one in a garden or a stem or anything it's the same as heroin possession but seeds are legal. The little black seeds on bagels are opium poppy seeds.                                                                                                                                                                                                          If we saw the seed we would know for sure on the fruit. persimmon seeds are all about the same.

Ok, from the research I've done it seems to be some type of persimmon. Seems they come in slightly different shapes with a couple different seeds. Should ripen late summer to fall. Anyone else have a difinitive answer?

They say they ain't ripe til its frosted on them couple times but ive eat them without them bein frosted on. Should be real mushy when ripe. I have several in my yard.
