Title: Skeered of the Dark
Post by: YELLOWBLACKMASK on August 21, 2012, 08:40:23 am
Not the first time I have came across this topic, but was talking with some guys awhile back about ideal hunting timeframes.

I mentioned that we predominantly hunt at night and haven't ventured into daylight in several years.
Immediately I received an ole familiar response that alot of folks seem to have about night hunting.

(I'm not going in on a big hog at night)

My question is simply .......why not..what are your reasons?

Usually I receive the common response like...you can't see good enough at night and its way to dangerous ...or dogs can't see well enough to get away from the hog in a thicket.

Hmmmmmm.  Haha. I hear these excuses while they hold a two dollar walmart special head light that they cannot see ten feet in front of them...

But I will give the sake of conversation a chance.

If you will not night hunt for specific reasons.....let's hear what they are.

Enjoy.

I hear all the same excuses. I would rather hunt in the daylight myself but it is just to hot. I can hunt longer at night.

Agreed. I personally enjoyed daylight hunting especially in the winter.

But we have found the downfalls that come along with daylight hunting far exceed the downfalls of nighttime in our area.
Not downing daytime runners at all.

But I have never understood the reluctance to go at night.
Hell I even have seasoned hunters with far more experience under their belts just flat out refuse.

People gripe about snakes they can't see them as well or they come out in the summer and it it too hot to hunt days in summer so they just hunt in the winter.

I'm a daytime man myself.  I just hate hunting at night.  I do this mostlyfor the dogs so I enjoy walking into and watching a good bay, that's hard to do at night.  Plus I like to track hunt and that's almost impossible at night.

I'm coming around to hunting at night, I know my rough dog has more bay come night fall.  I'm ventirig more out at night on my solo hunts and some are rough on me.  Walking along ways into a bay and habit to walk out and lead dogs and getting turned around, it's hog hunting and night hunting is better then no hunting.   No good excuses as to why I don't, it just boils down to I'm more comfortable during the day whether it's 100 degrees out, but once I do the night owl thing for awhile, I'll be better at it  :D

i would much rather hunt at night myself..... yeah you have to worry about snakes and other thangs that you cant see that well but that doesnt worry me near as bad as some trigger happy jackwagon weekend rambo wannbe thats gonna shot at  everythang that moves

plus as stated befor you can run alot longer at night

I prefer the daytime because watching the dogs work is what it's about to me..

But the majority of our hunting is done at night.. I think going into a bay at night gets my adrenaline pumping more, especially when you cut the bulldog loose and hear that loud blow/grunt from a big hog.  ;)

And I will answer for fire medic... He is old, slow, and skeerd!!!   :D  >:D

Nights are for sleeping. Its cooler at 6:00 in the morning than it is at midnight. When you get old its hard to be out late and do much the next day. I coon hunted at least four nights a week for many years and now when the sun goes down, I want to be at the house.

ha ha i'm right thar with you bigo lol hell it's time to eat supper at 4.30 now  lol i'm fixing to start hunting at night again [ coon ] but i like to run hogs in the daylite . to me you get on more full blown sounders in the daytime that are bedded up and have a better chance of muliple kills . i am more interested in wipeing out the hog population than hunting them . plus the fact i run these treeing curs and there is alot more involved in the trash breaking part of it when hunting at night . so much more to do .

I'm not saying I won't hunt at night, but I don't!   The reasons are many, but here's a few
Light always his out about time I need it
I get lost easier
Seems dogs get cut up more
Walk 1 mile threw a thicket when there is a rd or fence row 100 yards away I couldn't see
Can't watch dogs hunt or work
Often my hunts are 6-8 hours can't do that and work the next day

I go at night in the summer because it's to hot in the daytime. Sometimes start at 2 or 3am hunt till 9 or 10. A good light and a couple hunting buddies is essential.

Day or night don't matter to me. I have a dog that does better during the day. But I ain't worried about snakes you can't see them good day or night. I ain't worried about the hog stuff happens day or night. I mostly hunt at night but hunt during the day if I get the chance.

These are the problems I have at night.

1.) hogs run, run and run more... Unless you hunt extremely rough, shut them down type dogs

2.) the cd's routinely miss the hogs that are bayed at night, then it's off to the races. And these are jam up cd's, just not some junk with a vest on

3.) it's harder to see. It's extremely thick youpon, briar, plantation, cut over mix where we mostly hunt. It's hard enough to get through in the daylight much less dark.

4.) we don't love hog hunting enough to go at night. It's just too much work in my opinion

Some of the positives are the hogs move more at night so it is much easier for lesser caliber dogs to find one. It's cooler at times, therefore less heat strokes during the summer, and you can go wherever your dogs go and get them easier without problems.

Face your fears Matt. And search for sunshine in your soul.

Must be the vampire blood in me.  I start to smoke and simmer in the daylight.

I would rather hunt in daytime but i hunt just as much at night as i do in the day. Main reason for me to hunt at night is the heat an deer season. Plus all the big boys come out to play at night. Most big hogs i have caught have been at night. Some people just scared of the dark i reckon

night time is the only way, less plp out and the hogs are up feeding, and its harder for them dog killer to shoot a dog at night, sleeping is for when you die.

I have a cousin that's terrified of the dark if he has to walk to a deer stand alone he'll sing twinkle twinkle little star. Funniest thing ever the first time I heard it

used to be all night hunting for several reasons...one is the dogs have a lot lower chance of getting shot...and, if they trespass it is easier to go get them...

but my favorite time to hunt is in the winter time right after deer season, early in the morning on a big wooded ranch that has some pasture and brush land in the mix...with enough hogs to keep it interesting...

I hunt nighttime all summer long and on occassion during deer season, its to damn hot down here to hunt daytime in the summer. I do enjoy daytime hunting more just due to the convience of it but i dont mind night time hunts, its quiet and usually not near as windy.

I've enjoyed reading all the reasons for one or the other.....just shows me how vastly different hunters can be. I coon hunted for a long time when I was a younger guy, and I liked hunting at night, and of course, coon hunting isn't very productive during the daylight hours.  :)

As for hog hunting, I've been quite a few times at night and I simply cannot find as reason to go at night as opposed to the daytime except during the summer months, and I don't hunt much in summer, just when we have a cool front come through. Hog hunting, for me, is just way more fun in the daytime, and that's what I'm doing it for in the first place!

Besides, all these night hunters are out of the way by daylight and we can do our thing and see what's going on to boot!

Never been worried about a hog so far,.....been run up a bush a few times but nothing real serious so far.....I carry a rifle, why should I worry about a hog getting me? Day or night.

Ole' Trent a.k.a........young whipper-snapper, will come to this conclusion as he ages and becomes more mature....but that will take time......but that's something that he has plenty of at his tender age...... ;D
