I think the young dog is under two years but don't quote me on that. Chance, the people are a good ways back and just set or stand and quietly watch. A real wild dog like some of Ben's that never get to see strangers might have trouble.

Just wondering how they judge this trial, I've never seen one and am really interested in it, is it a two dog or single, and is it timed, any info is appreciated thanks.

I think you can work 1 to 3 dogs. It does have a time limit to complete the course, 15 min., I am pretty sure. The cows are turned out and after they croos a line the dogs are turned loose. The dog or dogs must stop the cows and hold them up for a set time before you can start driving them. You then take the cows through a series of gates on the corse and back to some pens. They have someone riding along on a horse judging the dogs. The dogs that draw a good set of cattle and have the fastest time usually wins. I don't agree with the way its judged because it should be on the way the dogs work. No one I know that goes there and  shows dogs care if they win or loose, they go for the fellowship with other dog men. You will see some of the best that ever lived there.

I am not going but My grandpa  Jack King will be there.  He got some dang fine Border Collies.  All he does is work dogs and travel the country going to these trials.  It is amazing what he can get those dogs to do with a silent whistle.

Thinking of going to the trials how big of a deal is it and is there people there with dogs forsale

Title: Re: Cow Dog Trials
Post by: hogdog05 on September 28, 2012, 04:47:08 pm
It's a pretty big deal probably 15-20 competetors.  Might be some dogs for sale, but most guys bring there dogs they make a living with.  Takes better part of the day to do the old dogs on Saturday and a good bit on Sunday for the puppy class.

It's about 25 or 30 miles north of Broken Bow on 259 And about 8 or 10 miles south of Smithville on 259. Mr. Camps house is on the east side next to the road in about the first open land you come to out of Broken Bow. Right past the house next to the road is where the trucks and trailers are parked. You have to turn in Mr. Camps driveway.

I'm planning on coming, I want to see some real working dogs and see if I can get any wisdom to rub off on me from some real dog men. I may only make it for Saturday but I'm pretty excited about it!

Hogdog05 took a lot, but I think he took more of the "scenery" than the actual cow dogs...  ;D

It was a yeller dog heaven..

Put a lot of faces to names from on here, meet several legends and many other good folks..

Ben Jordan won the first day and outstanding dog... Not sure about the young dogs on Sunday...

Clue Anderson won the derby dogs on Sunday (under two years old), and a little boy's gyp won outstanding dog.  Clue was using Buck (Cowboy/Sarah) and a Cowboy/Sue gyp. Sarah was raised and belonged to Bigo and Skoalbandit. I had a blast and got to meet some really nice folks.

It was sure nice to get out to see good dogs work, visit some old friends and meet some new ones. The young men I met from this board, I felt like I allready knew. Brandon, hogdog05, took so many pictures that its going to take some time to go through them all. I am looking forward to seeing them myself.

Bob, did Brandon enter his pups? Sounds like Cowboy was well represented. Unfortunate he was lost in his prime. Dogs like him that can produce and reproduce are sure a treasure.

Ked i did not enter my dogs.  I bred my gyp and she had week old puppies so i did not enter with just one dog.  For sure next year.  Cowboy represented well along with Sarah.  I had a blast.  Got David rilled up a time or two.  But hey thats what i'm good for.
