Title: catching a cow Post by: Bo Pugh on September 21, 2012, 07:53:19 pm my neighbor has a cow that is roaming around the woods around our house that wont go back in his pasture and runs when we get close to her, he asked me today if my dogs would catch it and i said yea. its a full grown heifer with horns about 2foot wide shes black and white just to give yall an idea of what she looks like. but what i want to know has anyone on here ever caught a cow with bulldogs before? i need to know how many bulldogs i need to put on her and what to expect when they catch her and maybe a few tips on what to do after they do catch her. i wont be doing this off a horse i was thinking about putting my box on my ranger and opening the doors when i see her. any information about what im getting into will be helpful thanks

I wouldnt do it i would rope it or get someone that knows how if she gets one dog down she could kill it not worth it to me. If you do it expect a rodeo thats no fun
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: halfbreed on September 21, 2012, 08:03:56 pm uuhhmmmm TROUBLE is what your fixing to have . a good [ cow] bulldog is way differant than a bulldog . a good cow working bulldog allways hits the nose and applies just enough pressure to hold the cow , too much pressure and the cow will go to fighting and the end result is not good for the dog or the cow . if you turn your dogs on a cow just be ready for a rodeo lol and some stomped on dogs and torn up cow .

Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: Bo Pugh on September 21, 2012, 08:16:49 pm there are no professionals cow hands around here or anything close to a cowboy, just some ruff hog hunters. this is the second time i have been asked to turn on a cow this month. the other week a man asked us to come up there to his place said he had 2 out we get up there and he then tells us one was about a 1500lb bull and one about 500lbs but we couldnt find them i wasnt wanting to run up on that bull anyhow. i might need to get in this business around here. if anyone has a video of a cow catching they could post it might be helpful. what i was thinking was turn 1 or 2 bulldogs on it and maybe she will sit down or just stand there and tie a rope around her neck to a tree and then take a tractor and pull her in a trailor?
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: bigo on September 21, 2012, 08:17:26 pm I have caught several and can tell you it's hell on bulldogs if they don't know how to catch a cow. You just think hogs are hard on them, a cow can ruin one right quick.
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: Bo Pugh on September 21, 2012, 08:17:43 pm Where you located? im in south alabamaTitle: Re: catching a cow Post by: Bo Pugh on September 21, 2012, 08:22:25 pm im wondering if i put 3 or 4 jags on her and no bulldogs would that be better? shes kinda wild i was gonna walk up to her today and try to get her to go in a neighbors horse pen and she charged like a bullet straight at me i just got behind a tree and she ran off. i could definetly see how this could be dangerous
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: redtick23 on September 21, 2012, 08:22:30 pm kiss your bulldog goodbye if it doesnt know what it is doing
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: dblackwell on September 21, 2012, 08:25:40 pm Catching cattle is not unheard of. Mainly for a run off wild cow you can't get close enuf to rope. Hunt her down and send your dogs. Get her caught then roped, call out your dogs, and drag her in the trailer. My question for you is what do you plan on doing with her once you have her caught? Will you have someone with a trailer ready and someone ready to rope her? Can you call your dogs out? If not take everyones advice and don't bother it will be nothing but a headeach.
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: Easttex91 on September 21, 2012, 08:26:51 pm I wanna see what happens after the bulldogs catch it lol
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: easttexasoutlaw33 on September 21, 2012, 08:29:37 pm Catch it with a bullet and eat steaks!!!!! >:D
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: Bo Pugh on September 21, 2012, 08:44:02 pm yeah the man has a trailor but the calling the dogs out is probably not going to happen and the roping thing is gonna be a problem to. i was just hoping she would sit down when they got her caught and i could walk up there and just tie it around her neck but i didnt know if she would run with them on her or be bucking and charging. i really dont know about this whole alabama cowboy thing lol .im thinking now ill just leave my bulldogs at home and call a buddy i hunt with some and we just use his bulldogs
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: Reuben on September 21, 2012, 08:46:07 pm if you use those bull dogs for catch dogs on hogs then you shouldn't put them on a cow because they will start catching cows and you don't want that...I have seen it about 4 times too many...dogs get trampled and cows go down and dogs loose their canines...and now you have cow catching machines...
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: heavyhitter89 on September 21, 2012, 08:53:07 pm True .. when we have problems with cows we just get of few dogs to put just enough pressure on it and to drive it in to a pen. It's never as easy as it sounds.. may take time but with enough trying the dogs should be able to drive it in a pen without catching on it.. jmo
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: cward on September 21, 2012, 09:04:42 pm Man please film this for us. Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: bullet72 on September 21, 2012, 10:01:14 pm let the cow. go get some cubes save ur dogs with no horses or ropes it going to be bad for the dogs and the cow seen it alot around here cattel will step in the guts of a ear caught dog to strip them. its over for the dog. nose catch and light pull will keep them healthy for a while. pits arent the best for cows.
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: Hamilton_hogger on September 21, 2012, 10:42:40 pm We allways used horses ropes and big old school

Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: Bo Pugh on September 22, 2012, 03:29:05 pm i did not turn the bulldogs on her due to everyones advice on here and i appreciate it. she is still roaming around here i seen her a little while ago walking down the highway and ran her back in the woods and have been making a round every so ofter to see if i see her. i guess her owner is not to concerend about her but i dont want anyone to wreck and its better than sitting inside watching tv to me lol
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: gomer on September 22, 2012, 03:33:01 pm If there is a need for cow catching in your area I would look into investing in a tranquilizer gun. You could dart them and then winch them in a trailer.
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: hogdog hunter86 on September 22, 2012, 06:41:09 pm Just shoot her and get the meat
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: circleP on September 22, 2012, 09:47:20 pm Bulldogs are hard to work on cattle cause they want to catch anything that moves. Find somebody with a good set of curs that are rough. My dogs catch the ears and nose and it's a done dill. I wished I was closer to ya.

Send your catch dogs two of them get to the cow asap roll her over twist her head to where you can stick a horn in the dirt. Grab her tail pull it between her legs while one man sits on her like a hog. Another man tie her feet. This is going to be Western. We want to see a video for sure. Good luck. >:D When you take the pic be sure to sit well behind the cow so it looks bigger. But seriously, we have a tranquilizer gun. The other day we caught a wild bull using it. Tranquilize it, back the trailer up, tie a rope around its neck and nose, with the rope going through the trailer tie it to the truck hitch, let the cow come too and slowly pull it in. I have a video ill post later. Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: gomer on September 25, 2012, 08:59:41 pm Those guys are crazy. I would kill myself if I tried that.
Title: Re: catching a cow Post by: jimmy_creed on September 25, 2012, 11:59:09 pm we catch wild cattle with a bulldog all the time and been using the same bulldog for about 5 years now its just like catching a hog you just got to do your part and dont leave them caught to long saves alot of time on a bad cow that stays in the brush and fights
